March in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

As we deal with the blasted time change yet again, I thought it would be nice to take a quiet walk in the garden to soothe the irritation changing to daylight savings time. I know everyone else likes the light in the evening, but it is going to do that anyway in a few more weeks. For me, it is abruptly dark later in the morning, and I don’t like that. I wake later, meaning I do not get as much done in the morning and have less time to read, plus it takes me weeks to get used ...

February In the Garden from From My Carolina Home

My mind has been on my garden for a few days now, as I observe some green shoots coming to life again. The little patch of daffodils is coming up, with buds already showing. This patch is a mixture of all yellow daffodils and some yellow and white ones. They usually bloom in late February, so they are right on time this year.

I’m watching the bird feeders closely now too, and caught a photo of a pair of downy woodpeckers. The female is on the feeder above, with the male on the suet cake. One way to distinguish ...

Gardening, Quilting, and a few more things from From My Carolina Home

With all the posts I have this month set to be quilt alongs, Stashbusters, Safelight project, and more, Sundays are the only time to catch up on everything else. Go get another cuppa (of whatever your cup contains in the morning) and settle in for a long, chatty and picture heavy post. This warm weather is continuing to bring out the spring flowers early. This week, the Japanese cherry next to the meadow and the forest edge burst into bloom with beautiful pale pink flowers.

The tree is small, but stands out against the still winter scene of the forest ...

Gardening, Quilting and Painting Fun from From My Carolina Home

It’s been a busy week, with something going on every day. It hasn’t left a lot of time for sewing on my own projects, but I have made good progress on a free quilt along I’ve designed just for you coming in March for National Quilting Month – more on that below. I also took a class, painted some rocks, and made progress in the garden. Settle in for a long and chatty post as we catch up. Let’s start in the garden, shall we? The daffodils are coming up and just beginning to bloom. These white ...

First Day of Spring from From My Carolina Home

It is going to be busy, busy for several more weeks, so it is important to take a moment to breathe, and find some calm and peace. For me, the early morning when the dawn light softly lights the fog across the valley, settling in the layers between the hills is quiet time. Birdsong delights my ears as the light increases.

Before the last freeze, the double daffodils bloomed in their bed.

These are just so gorgeous, with apricot ruffles between white petals.

Stunning, a true gift in the garden.

Visiting this week, a small flock of wild turkeys came ...

March in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

Spring is well on the way, and the garden has come alive with daffodils. I have several spots where I planted groups of daffodils, with different varieties in each place. Some are along the driveway and in the island on the circle in front of our home. These came up this past week and bloomed. The lovely yellow petals with the orange centers are so cheerful, like a ray of sunshine in an otherwise brown landscape.

The mixed garden of all yellow or all white daffodils opened up fully. There are about 50 bulbs here, sent to me by a ...

Rainy Days and Scrap Dancing Fun from From My Carolina Home

It has been another week of appointments and meetings, with little to show. Last night it was raining and this morning was foggy when I awoke. The clouds are supposed to lift later and warm up a bit. It was a dreary dawn, but I do love the layers that appear when the fog settles in the valleys.

Last night, I had some fun presenting my Scrap Dancing program to the Shelby Foothills Quilt Guild. They are a small but mighty group, and such fun to be with. It is nice to have a live audience again, that interactive feedback ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

We were housebound for four days this past week, which meant a lot of projects were either finished or new ones begun. A few Zoom calls took up a bit of time, and I got a bit more progress on the epic historical novel I’m currently reading. Just before the snow started, I got this photo of Oliver on the retaining wall, and noticed my daffodils are coming up way too early! It was so warm before the snow, they are confused. I think they’ll be OK, daffodils can take the cold.

On the feeder, a huge pileated ...

February in the Garden from From My Carolina Home

In the garden this month, there has been an interesting contrast of dull days and bright color, sunny mornings and then snow followed by days of rain.  Just the day before our QOV sew day, it snowed.  As I watched the snow fall, it seemed that every bird in the neighborhood needed a bit of extra fuel to deal with the cold.
