And then the lights went out from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! Hey, are you all covered in snow? We are, and it's freaking me out just a little because it's been so long since we've seen it. The snow is also complicating some excitement I've had in the sewing room recently. I have flourescent lights in there-- or I had, at this point-- and I lost two out of three of them one day last week. They just stopped working, which was not welcome at all. We had planned to change out the lights in there to some LED lights anyway, so we called the ...

Liberty Pillow from Quilting Stories

Liberty pillow

Liberty pillow

Liberty pillow

I was not satisfied with my LIBERTY pillow. Laziness never pays : I had not quilted it and it looked flat.

Neither was I pleased with the back of it, done with a basic cotton instead of a Liberty one.

As regards the sewing of a zip : for those like me who have difficulties with this step, there is the solution of linking the two parts of the back of the pillow with strings, as shown on the last picture. The result is lovely.

Now my pillow looks perfect!

happy october . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Hello October, I'm so happy that you're here!  It's *birthday* month and it's blog hop month, too!  :)

I finished stitching up Mr. Jack O'Lantern!
He's such fun.  But I felt he needed something a little more than a hoop or mug rug finish. I think I found (or rather, made) the perfect solution . . .
Yay!  It's a slipcover for a Christmas pillow I've had for ages. I may go back and quilt the face of it later.  Maybe.  Right now, I'm liking is just as it is, where it is!

I got ...

A Hexie Project + OMG June + FNwF from Samelia's Mum

It's been fairly quiet in the sewing room this week. I finished appliqueing all of the petals which I had prepared for my orange peel temperature quilt and need to make some more.

A big hexie squirrel from Quilting & Learning

About a month ago I made a squirrel - that is a little (or sometimes big) project that just insists on getting done, right NOW. I knew that this would be my May DrEAMi (Drop Everything And Make it), a link up that's always a lot of fun, and hosted by Sandra at mmm! quilts.

The Big Hexie Experiment

Big Hexie Experiment
I bought the Better Homes & Gardens "Handwork happiness" magazine a while back (see Related links). I was intrigued by the way that the little table mat "Hex Marks the Spot" was finished.

Last year my lovely neighbour made ...

Strip Piecing and Geometrics from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

One of the things that I enjoy the most about quilting is the endless possibilities, how versatile and improvisational it can be.
There are some easy techniques that can lead you to amazing creations. Having this in mind I decided to show how easy it could be to use strip piecing to create different patchy patterns that you can implement for any type of project.

Pillows, pouches, tote bags, garments, quilt blocks, patches, wall arts, coasters, etc.

The more creative you get the more interesting your project will be. The fabric contrast is very important to end up with astonishing ...

My Dodecagon Quilt Top!! from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

While I gave myself the "one monthly goal" challenge to use the entire month of February to get the five large sections of my dodecagon quilt together, once it started to happen I was anxious to see the finished top because it is so beautiful!!
(My pictures are a bit dark -- blaming cold cloudy Ohio winter days -- but you get the idea.)
I calculated that I needed to stitch twelve 1" seams every day to be finished!

First the upper right corner.
Then the lower right corner!
And the lower left corner!
On Monday evening, I pushed to finish the ...

Handwork Happiness – A Review from Hooked on Quilting

Given that it’s still too cold in most places to get out and do outdoor things, sitting inside with a project that can be done indoors, either at home or elsewhere, is the perfect solution to keeping yourself busy while possibly multitasking by listening to podcasts, audio books, or that movie you just love and have seen 100+ times to the point of not needing to actually look at the screen because your memory takes over and plays it in your head without ever having to look up. You know the ones…

On a particularly cold wet day last ...

A Bag and A Blogiversary from Indigo Threads

Having the flu put a crimp in my blog plans!  But it's Day 8 now and I'm pretty sure I'm going to live after all.  So here we go.

I missed my blogiversary because of that darn flu.  It was on Wednesday and it's been 12 years! Hard to believe that I haven't run out of things to say yet!  Thanks for hanging in there with me!

My secret pal finally received her Christmas gift from me, so now I can share it with you!  This was through the Tacoma Modern Quilt Guild.  We have ...

Wednesday from Samelia's Mum

It's the last full week of the summer school holidays here so we're trying to make the most of it, even though the teen/tween aren't overly enthusiastic about all of my ideas for 'fun' activities.

We ventured into Darling Harbour (Sydney) and spent a few hours at the Wildlife Park and the Sydney Aquarium. It was quite a warm day, so this was a nice way to stay a little bit cooler. It seemed as though half of Sydney had the same idea as we did because both attractions were crowded.

2020 Planning Party from Quilting & Learning

Although I had an amazing 2019 production wise, I did what I promised myself I wouldn't do - I over extended myself with my art quilting. It was great to know that I could do all of this art, but I haven't done an art quilt since. So with these famous last words in mind, here are my goals for 2020.

Planning for 2020

Free Motion Quilting

In the last few months I've been playing with free motion quilting and making some lovely, easy projects from the practice pieces I've finished. I will be doing more FMQ ...

beginnings and ends . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

I love finishes!  This morning I can share not one, but TWO! Well, perhaps I should clarify. Not two completely finished, ready-to-put-up-and-enjoy-and-never-need-to-be-worked-on-again projects. But two projects on which I've finished the embroidery stitches! I wrapped up my pumpkin piece (by Crabapple Hill Studios):
I just love this sweet stitchery.  I love the character and variety of stitches and colors.  It was truly like painting a scene.  It's so yummy!

And I finished my teapot table topper . . .
I think the last time I shared anything on it, I was still whipping the hexies together! I finished the hexies up ...

excessive stitches . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

I've got a couple of different hand-work projects in progress right now.  Because I can't focus on just ONE thing.  No, I have to have THREE things (or more) going on simultaneously. LOL!

In yesterday's post I talked about a dream quilt (literally, a quilt I designed in my dreams).  I (day)dreamed up another little piece ... a hexie mat.  I'd done one years ago for my mom (the pattern for it was in a magazine, but I don't remember which one--I blogged about here in 2012!) . . .
But I ran across some really cute teapot ...

2018: Year in Review from 3and3quarters

Thinking back on last year, I immediately frown and wonder just what it was I actually did during the year that could hold some significance for me.

At first I was all like, ‘nahh. Nothing happened that could really hold up in a blog post, detailing my life in and around my sewing room!’

But then a simple scroll through my Instagram and all of a suddenly I have a hurried, messy scribble of a list detailing all of the wonderful events and creative pursuits I managed to fit into the year!

So, listing in chronological order, let’s review ...
