A busy week from Romany Quilting

We have certainly had a busy week.  After our Caravan Club weekend rally we drove down to stay at Petone for several days.  With a couple of appointments during the week at Wellington Hospital it seemed sensible to stay here, then we wouldn't have the long commute from Levin to Wellington and back.

It was nice to meet up with friends during our five days at Petone.  Rae and Bruce from Foxton were also staying here, they had a family 21st birthday to attend, so they decided to stay on site for a couple of nights. They  travel around ...

It’s a Girl Thing from Romany Quilting

Today was “that” day, I was due for my annual mammogram.  Since I was diagnosed in 2016 with breast cancer, and underwent subsequent treatment, as a follow-up I have been called up for an annual mammogram.  A little momentary discomfort is a small price to pay for such great care.  Most hospital care is free here in New Zealand, and I have been very impressed (and oh so grateful) for the cancer care I have received.

As a bonus, I was treated to a mini quilt show in the breast screening rooms.  This beauty was hanging in the waiting room ...

Simply Quilts and a Health Update from The Modern Diary

I am really enjoying the facebook group Red Button Quilts now that I have found it!  I decided to get the kit for this month's "Simply Quilts" pattern.  The patterns are free each month (join the facebook group and there is a link to the website where you can find the pattern just for that month) but I wanted to work with the wool instead of just my scraps.
I spent the entire day yesterday (besides almost two hours dealing with the lack of space on my smart tv...lots of googling and Kathy's help to fix it ...

Unwelcome for Christmas from Romany Quilting

Look what I’ve acquired for the next few days, just in time for Christmas.  Putting the groceries away yesterday I tripped and fell, putting my hands out to break the fall, as you do.  Nothing broken but it seems I've sprained my wrist.   So now, for the first time, I’m sporting a wrist brace as it is quite painful.  Doing something like this makes you realise how often you use two hands to do so many things.  Hopefully in a few more days it will all come right.

A Slow Week from Romany Quilting

It’s been rather a slow week here, as far as stitching goes.  No rolling the dice, and sadly, no chance to start assembling one or other of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects.  But…… I did get one out, my little spool wall-hanging I’m making for the sewing room, look at it to see how I want to arrange the spools, and that’s about it.  Does that count for anything?   The only actual stitching I’ve done is for a secret squirrel Christmas project, and you know I cant show that just yet.  Or maybe, just a smidgeon ...

Feeling like a fraud. from Pointless Quilter

My blog name is Pointless Quilter but I haven't been quilting a lot lately.  I have been working on Orca Bay for a while now.  And while I have most of the inner quilt finished (well by the end of today I hope) I did have 1/2 of it done about two weeks ago.

All those red triangle units with the black pieced corners kill me.  The border is full of them too and if I didn't already have the black pieced parts done for the border, I'd change it.  It's a super scrappy quilt ...

Busy, Busy from Romany Quilting

I’ve been busy in the kitchen today, preparing meals for our upcoming three day weekend away in the caravan.  So what have I made?  Asparagus quiche for a start, made with fresh new season asparagus, that should do us for a meal or two.  Then some bacon and egg bites,  a recipe I found on BBC Food,  some of these had double yolk eggs.  Very  tasty too, and will do for lunches while we are away. It’s always handy to have some easy meals prepared, and  I made a date loaf as well.

Under the Sea again, and Medical Matters from Romany Quilting

I’m still working on the quilting on my Under the Sea quilt.  You may remember that I reported last time “no more unpicking” but…….. just didn’t like Plan B Serpentine stitch after all.  You know what it’s like, if you don’t like something in the beginning, you will never like it.  So it got ripped out, and I went for the look of gentle little eddies coming up from the sea floor instead.

Easter has been and gone from Romany Quilting

Easter 2020 has been and gone, and it was quite a different experience for all of us in Lockdown.  A few Easter buns were eaten but there was a mild panic when I couldn’t find where I had put the peppermint marshmallow Easter Eggs.  After looking through the pantry a couple of times, they were finally tracked down.  What bliss, an Easter Egg to nibble on after dinner.  It doesn’t take much to make us happy these days, does it?

Easter Saturday was a different day, as we had to drive up to Palmerston North Hospital (50km each ...

Answers from a Pandemic from Nina Paley

100 years without a pandemic has made us stupid. It’s made me stupid, anyway.

So many questions about human nature that puzzled me, I now see answered. Why are we so tribal? Why does language change so quickly? Why are we so xenophobic – so fearful of people who look different from us even slightly?

Answer: communicable diseases.

The Andaman Islanders  had the right idea. They may or may not have known the missionary attempting to evangelize them was full of contagions that could kill them; but they had instincts, and culture, that protected them from infection.

Doesn’t it ...

Working Slowly from Romany Quilting

I’ve been plodding away this week working on the horse panel quilt, and I’m getting there slowly.  Done straight lines with my trusty walking foot here and there, and started quilting around the panels.  If I was more proficient with free motion quilting this could have been done in half the time – it’s much slower using a walking foot as I stopped and started, making my way around the designs on the panels.

My Little Helper from Romany Quilting

Gemma always thinks it’s rather fun to help me make the bed.  Lots of opportunities to prance around and get in the way!  First she had to make sure that I had put the clean sheets on properly.  And then fluff up the duvet and lay it on top, after I had removed the cat, of course.

Then it was time to put the quilt back on the bed – she likes to flatten out underneath while I lay it on top of her for a while, then she pops out, a bit like ...

Six things Mr. Rogers said that help me cope with Covid-19 from Nita Dances

Small projects, basket strings quilts, health issues from Elaine Adair Pieces

Sue made this little quilt (above) and asked me to send it to the collection point, Hugs and Stitches.   I looked at it and LOVED it immediately only to hear that it was ME who started it long ago and then in my fit of cleaning out UFOs, she picked it up and finished it!  Yeahhhh, that's what friends are for!  Sue has been a fresh, excited, participating addition to our quilting community.   We are heartbroken to see her move but understand that moving near family is of primary importance.

Below is a silly kids quilt for same donation ...

Glass Half Empty from Romany Quilting

Although I try hard, I’ve always been a “glass half empty” sort of girl, and tend to think a lot of “what if”.  Which doesn’t do my peace of mind any good at all.  About a month ago I had to go and have one of these, an MRI.  This was because after my recent colonoscopy I had a polyp removed, sent to the lab, and it came back positive.  The MRI was to check that there was nothing else nasty hiding inside.

The Ten Month Catch Up! from The Modern Diary

I have not blogged since January!  I cannot recall how much I have shared here about my health, but that has a lot to do with why I have not been blogging.  Ok, I just looked back  and I see I explained in November some.  In November at my follow up appointment for my lumbar puncture the neurologist told me I did not have MS.  I went in for an MRI and saw a naturopath and was in general feeling like I was dying.  I missed so much work last year and barely worked my second job at all.  I ...
