Mallard Duck Mini Finish with Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Even without my favourite sewing machine, I was able to sew and quilt with the walking foot, my son's Mallard Duck mini. When I showed it to him, he said that he would find a spot for this one and the other two that I've made for him.

Finishing the Mallard Duck

As you saw in my Making a Mallard Duck Mini post, the foundation paper piecing went well. I always manage to make at least one piece that doesn't have enough selvage but I'm really good at problem solving

Making a Mallard Duck Mini from Quilting & Learning

About a year and a half ago, I promised my son a third mini for his apartment entrance. My timing is off since he’s moving in a few weeks to another apartment. I really hope that he’ll have somewhere to hang up, or even use these as mug rugs.

Foundation Paper Piecing a Mallard Duck

I’ve used a few of "Made by Marney" foundation paper piecing patterns. I particularly like her Woodland Animals series.

I love this little guy. As you can see, I haven’t cropped it yet.

Since my Jag ...

Trying for something different and Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Welcome! I do have some free motion quilting (FMQ) to show you, but not on my son's quilt...my Jag is getting a long overdue tune-up and it could take a few weeks.

Creating an improv quilt during a playdate

The Out of the Box Fibre Artist Group had a playdate which I attended, since at the last minute, I had decided to take the day off work. Our playdate host, one of our members, did a great job of introducing us to improv piecing and stripes. Who knew that there was anything to say about stripes other than ...

Planning and FMQ with Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Hi! I've finally started on my son's quilt. I've been planning the designs, which are loosely based on my mother's hand quilted designs from Stéphane's original quilt. I also free motion quilted (FMQ) the first little section.

Fence Art Finish and Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

I was able to finish my Fence Art this week. I really love how it turned out.

Outdoor Textile Art

It's hanging with the correct hardware (more on that later) and has been weather treated with spray, three times in the front and once in the back. All that's left is to paint and shorten the bottom dowel - which I got done, see last image!

Colours in the Garden - finished!

I had a lot of fun FMQ the bee. The appliqué was all black with the ...

Garden Fence Art from Quilting & Learning

I hope that this post finds you well. The cooler days and nights are with us, hopefully for a while, and I'm very much enjoy them. I never want summer to end, just because it's always too short, but this heat is nuts and I'm glad that fall is in the air. The leaves haven't changed yet but it won't be long!

Free Motion Mavericks Link-up from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week 344 of Free Motion Mavericks. I'm afraid that I have no free motion quilting (FMQ) to share with you today. All of my attention, other than the Instagram posts for my #100dayschallenge (which will probably start slowing down) have been given to Chevy. She's now blind and very anxious, poor thing. When she's not pacing in circles around the first floor, she's passed out, exhausted. So I'm sharing this picture of my still cute Chevy, who gets stuck, even behind the curtains.

Improv piecing and FMQ from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week   of Free Motion Mavericks linking party. I'm not sure if the eye candy will show up today since I waited too late in the day to take pictures.

Playing with improv piecing and FMQ

I'm really into mindless at this time. The heat is back and Chevy is not letting me sleep as much as I need to! All that to say that last night I wanted to sew but I didn't want to follow a pattern or plan, therefore, improv piecing! Since I also wanted some free motion quilting for today's post ...

More Embroidered Mixed-media Botany at Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

This is the second post about my Embroidered Botany Workshop with Amanda McCavour. You can find the first post in Related links below.

Mixed-media flowers

This was actually the first day of the weekend virtual workshop. We used an assortment of mixed-media to fill in our embroidered botany piece. During the workshop I made a flower and that evening, since I was so inspired, I made a second piece - an Allium flower.

On that first day, we made our sample using FMQ on both the Sulky Solvy and Fabri-Solvy. The Sulky Solvy sticks to itself when ironed, so it's ...

Embroidered Botany Workshop at Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

A few weeks ago I took a wonderful weekend virtual workshop with Amanda McCavour - Embroidered Botany and Water Soluble Stabilizer. It was offered through the Quilt Surface Design Symposium (QSDS), which is usually held in Ohio.

Sculptured flower

Amanda is a great teacher and we got to play and make many samples using FMQ on Sulky Solvy and Fabri-Solvy. Both are water soluble stabilizers that you can free motion quilt on. When you are finished, you simply rinse or soak your piece to dissolve the background, leaving your FMQ design. If you're not familiar with the product, it does ...

Thread, Tension & Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Welcome to week 337 of Free Motion Mavericks. Here is a short update of what's going on with Version 2.0.

Thread & Tension

Whether I've wanted to or not, I've learned a lot of things making my son's Version 2.0 quilt. At the beginning it was math - the hard way, and now it's quilting with black batting, choosing the thread and making sure that my thread tension is good.

I was really hoping that I could use the same colour of thread for the back, but still have ...

Planning and Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

As you may have read, I finished the quilt top for Version 2.0 of my Mother's quilt to my Son as my May One Monthly Goal (OMG). For June, my OMG is to sandwich it. I trimmed all of the threads on the back of the quilt top, pieced the back, and it's now ready to be sandwiched!

Planning the Free Motion Quilting (FMQ)

My mother made the quilt in 2000, for my son's 9th birthday. All of the hand-quilting were motifs of things in my son's life, such as nature, school, books, sports, math ...

I can't believe  it - I totally forgot that I had a post and a link up due today. I did vaguely think about it this week and then my sleep deprived brain skipped right over it. Such is life these days!

An Out of this World Finish on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

Celebrating Mars' Perseverance Rover Landing on Free Motion Mavericks from Quilting & Learning

It's a good thing that our last post's mission to Mars was postponed because there was a wonderful event last week as the Perseverance Rover landed on Mars. It was a huge success and is now immortalised in the Pinwheels & Stars baby quilt.

A Safe Landing on Mars

I never thought that I would be interested, but it's amazing what NASA has done since I was last interested in space (which was Armstrong's landing on the Moon which I watched at my Uncle's cabin in the woods). In my last post at the end of ...
