Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

I’ve been working slowly on the needlework project, but weekends have become busy! I am not at all sure I am going to finish this in time for the fair this year. I’ve decided to do the outer section in black, like a cast iron pan. I think this will look great with some black beads that I got from my friend Mary some time ago on the little dots. The iron on transfer is from Stitcher’s Revolution Kitchen Sayings.

I had the best time on Friday, with the announcement of my pattern publication in Quilts and ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

It was a week of flitting from project to project. Somehow my concentration was a bit off. Early mornings were cool, but the days warmed up fast to hot and humid. On the bird feeder this week, a mom cardinal brought her son. You can see he is almost done molting his baby feathers and is coming into his full red color. The tips of his wings are still grey, and a little fluff is still visible at the top of his tail.

A rainy beginning of the week gave me plenty of time to play in the basement. I ...

Pardon me, has anyone seen my marbles? from From My Carolina Home

I was sure I still had them, but apparently I had lost them. They were certainly missing when I got a phone call from a dear friend in a bind. The person in charge of publicity for our guild’s Garden of Quilts show called my friend and quit a few minutes before my friend called me. That day was also the day before the committee meeting. She was desperate. As the show chair she needed someone to fill that job immediately. As she pleaded for help, how could I say no? I do have a bit of free time ...

HVL NC Rocks! from From My Carolina Home

Today I’ll show my latest crafting obsession, so much fun. I know I saw this on a news program some time ago. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I found this rock painted with a chicken at the post office. It was sitting on a large boulder next to the front door that is in a rock garden. I have a lot of chickens in my kitchen, so it caught my eye. The back had a facebook logo and a name. So I took it home and looked it up. Turns out there is a group of folks that ...

More than a Blanket: Quilts are Art! from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

The Sunbeam quilt by from Annabel Wrigley for MODBLOCK.

Many have wondered, “Are quilts art or craft?” Well, the answer can be yes to either. Confused yet? Let’s start with the definition of art. In the Oxford dictionary art is said to be, “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”

In that sense, quilts can be considered an artform. Although quilts are created to serve a purpose, most often to keep us warm, they ...

Happy Monday! from QUilting By-You

I know, not a terribly descriptive title for today’s entry. As we all know, creativity ebbs and flows. I would love to tell you that I am rocking those Jacob’s Ladder blocks, but truthfully, they are in a holding pattern. We have a bit of a temporary scheduling issue. I won’t bore you with the details. Sometimes that’s the way it is with a small business and we have families. So, while that is going on we are just trying to work through our customer queue as best as we can which hasn’t left room ...

Make Time for a Little Self Care from QUilting By-You

I know, we were supposed to get back to those Jacob’s Ladder blocks. I had a little trouble getting back to them this week so I am not any further along with regard to choosing sashing fabric and getting them sashed. Don’t worry, I am still working on it and we should be able to post about them next Monday!

In the meantime, I thought we could talk about some self care. No, not the mental kind. The physical kind. It’s very easy to get into a groove and spend a lot of time sitting at our ...

5 Minute Stocking Stuffer from From My Carolina Home

I was watching a football game last weekend and saw the referee with his mask on a lanyard, so he could remove it to announce a penalty call then replace it quickly. This got me thinking. It is a bit of a pain to put on a mask to go into a store, take it off in the car, put it back on for the post office, take it off again. When we walk on the local trails, I hold it in my hand to put on when we meet others on the trails, then take it off again when ...

Sorry we missed you yesterday! from QUilting By-You

We are currently in the throes of our holiday rush, but there is light at the end of our tunnel! With the pandemic this year, it seems like many of us are having quality time sewing which means we need to get the quilting part done! It’s been nice to see so many different quilts come through the door.

Hopefully your holiday season is going well so far. I know that at this time of year we typically think about charitable donations or charitable acts since it is the season of giving. This year it feels like donations are ...

Needle and Pin Sharp Container from From My Carolina Home

Isn’t it always a pain to throw away a sharp needle or pin? I am sure this is one reason why I don’t throw away bent pins. I keep sticking the bent ones back in the pin cushion, thinking I’ll deal with it later. Wouldn’t you know, the bent ones are the ones I keep pulling out to use. Another Murphy’s law I suppose. The crappy bent pin you don’t want is the one you will pull out first every time. It may also be a subconscious reason that I don’t change my ...

Do you partake of other crafts? from QUilting By-You

I do. I will admit I do a lot of crocheting (or yarning as my boys call it – are you having fun with your yarning mom?). However, it is not the only other craft I dabble in.

I also enjoy photography. This summer I took advantage of our time together to take my children on some photography journeys so we could all learn how to take better pictures. This resulted in them each having a wonderful collage poster that is now framed in their rooms.

Recently I stumbled upon some YouTube videos pertaining to the first craft I enjoyed – cross-stitch ...

Oh no! I’ve lost my mojo! from QUilting By-You

Now what do I do?

It happens to all of us at some point. I suffered from a complete loss of crafting creativity at the beginning of the pandemic. I thought for sure that with my new found free time (after all no one was really going anywhere) that I would finally get the opportunity to try out some of the new patterns I had been dreaming about. Boy was I wrong!

Instead, I found my mind swirling and trying to understand the new world around me. I was trying to keep my family safe, myself safe, run a business ...

Autumn Jubilee Wrap Up from From My Carolina Home

What a month!  We did a lot of sewing and projects, ate some great food, planted bulbs, watched the wildlife, crafted, stamped and had a great time for Autumn Jubilee!  Please leave a comment today to thank all our sponsors for this event.  Most of the drawings have been held and winners notified.  Today is the final day to enter the last drawing from Friday.  And in response to requests, I’ve added a pdf of the final sashing and borders to Friday’s post.

We made a fun row quilt in our quilt along.

Used our embroidery stitches for ...

Autumn Jubilee Another Fun Project from From My Carolina Home

For this year’s #autumnjubilee2020, I tried something new and I hope you have fun reading about this project. I did this project in just a couple of hours, having some fun while I watched old black and white horror movies on TV.   Watching the original 1931 Dracula with Bella Lugosi and more of his horror classics, 1940s Frankenstein movies starring Peter Cushing, and more tales of terror with Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr, Claude Rains, Lionel Atwill, Bette Davis, Lionel Barrymore, Basil Rathbone and many more is such fun on a rainy day.  TCM is ...

Happenings and door hangers from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Last week Richard's aunt passed away. She and his mom were quite close, so we offered to take her to the services in Ville Platte, about 45 minutes' drive. The burial was in Prairie Rhonde, a place rather than a town, per se. I sat in the back seat, taking pictures because it's almost impossible to hear a conversation happening in the front seat. (That's a big-truck problem.) Anyway, I discovered both a grain mill and a wonderful old red barn.

The grain mill is in town, but this barn is in the middle of nothingness. Well ...

Pin It Weekly #333 from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Hello Weekly! Do you remember when I wrote last week that I really wanted to paint a mason jar? Well, I did. It's not so much fun, actually.

I painted a few in fall colors. Then distressed them. Then put a sealant on them. The paint still wants to scratch off. I had conned Rich into making some crates for them, so they are going in my little shop at Griffin's, but I don't know about this painted glass business.

Notice the crosses leaning on the jars? There are three. Rich made those because (I think) it ...

Pin It Weekly #332 from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

It's Weekly time! Here's hoping that you're having a fabulous week. I've been crafting. That's all. Crafting. And enjoying every minute. I thought I'd share some of the ideas that I've been toying with. I haven't made them all, but I'm hoping that the next week or so will see most of them complete.

I really want to paint a mason jar!

Who doesn't love wooden candy corn?!

And because I've gone a little crazy with the door hangers.

Hopefully I'll finish the door hangers that are waiting ...

DIY Mask with Nose Wire & Filter Pocket – mmb by hand

Face Mask Pattern - Free Sewing Patter • Craft Passion

Hello! Happy weekly! I hope you are well and wearing a mask. I know, there are lots of opinions about whether masks help. How can they not? The world has believed that a tissue helps to prevent colds and flu when someone coughs or sneezes. How can two or three pieces of fabric NOT help? It's just common sense.

Read the best DIY mask tutorial with this easy face mask pattern printable. Machine or hand stitch with or without a filter. Instructions, photos, video.

Wearing a mask helps to prevent viruses and bacteria from being expelled forward from the mouth or nose. Maybe it doesn't prevent every bit of mist from getting away, but surely it stops some droplets from getting ...

Pin It Weekly #341 from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

My "heart, quilts" board is knocking on 13,000 pins--yes! 13 thousand--pins. And you know what is the crazy part? Very few are duplicates. No wonder that board alone has well over 8,000 followers. Plus, there are more quilts out there! It's too much to wrap my brain around. I'd rather just introduce a few of those followers.

Hello to Diane Tryan, who has a "Sweet Recipes" board that makes me drool. Here's why:

Pumpkin-Swirled Oat Bars

Cindy Conner is our newest follower. She has a "crafty ideas" board that is definitely worth your time. It has a ...
