Midweek: snow + starts and near-finishes from With Strings Attached

We had a classic lake-effect snowstorm Sunday night into Monday morning. 13" fell in our town on the lake shore but there was only a dusting at the west end of the county and further south.

The back yard at 5:30 a.m. Monday. See the shed? That's where the snow shovels were. I put on my boots and retrieved them.

It warmed up and here's the same scene this morning. The temps will reach 60 by Friday so all the snow will be gone.

The Village Quilters held their biennial show at the College of Lake County on Friday and Saturday. Irene and I went on Friday. We saw many friends from our guild and others. Here are some of the quilts on display.

I arrived at the apartment and decided to work on the binding (edge) of that hexagon quilt while I finished drinking my tea. I'm a slow drinker.

Well, then, we got a call that someone (the lady who used to rent the farm) was coming to visit, so that preempted any teapot dusting. This week was a bit crazy! I received two giant boxes filled with all sorts of goodies. These usually take me a while to get everything all checked in and put away. My living room floor is about the only place I have to work now so things were a shambles for a few days.

I have way too many scrap/orphan block projects in the works right now. I decided I need to get some of these finished before I can start anything new.

These scrappy blocks have been on my mind lately. They were made from a bunch of 2" HSTs that we received in the mail. There are not enough blocks to make a traditional quilt so I am going to have to get create with how I lay them out.

My week got away from me, and I didn't post any finishes. So, I thought I would share some recent scrappy "treasures" I found around my house. Midweek: RSC collage + something new from With Strings Attached

It's been a while since I walked the trail at Sedge Meadow. 74 degrees and sunshine made it most pleasant.

I saw three bottle gentians! (The third one is at the lower right.)

Weekly update: an exhibit, golf, and quilting progress from With Strings Attached

Way back in May Sue and I talked about meeting at the College of DuPage to see the Hokusai exhibit. We made it on Thursday -- just in time since it closes September 21.

I took a one-semester Japanese history course in high school and it's remarkable what I remember (Ukiyo-e, the Floating World) despite all that I have forgotten.

Like the Mona Lisa, Hokusai's The Wave is a lot smaller in person than its reputation.

Quilt top #4 for August. My progress in having more finished (17) than started (15) has shriveled up. I'm glad I worked on this one though. The stacks that I had pinned to the design wall for 8 months had me thinking it was going to be too dark and maybe depressing. As it turns out it is plenty colorful, and even though deep toned, not too dark. My friend Karen wanted to burn through some of her batik scraps so she made three quilt tops out of squares with some vertical solid strips - each a different color. This one is the purple one. (The other two are blue and green.) We were finally able to use some of this gray, purple and yellow backing fabric we have had for eons. I think Deana picked it up from an estate. Quilt Retreat - Day One from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

I got up bright and early (OK—the usual time) and prepped to come to a quilting retreat. I know—the timing wasn't the best, so soon after Quilt Canada, but it is what it is. I had an opportunity to visit a brand new retreat house, and well, when opportunity knocks, you need to take advantage of the situation.

I used those packing skills I learned at Quilt Canada to put everything into the car.

I had a GREAT day. What's more important is knowing what makes me happy and what doesn't. The trick is having fewer moments that make me unhappy and more that make me happy!

It's the Weekend! from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It has been another busy week. Next Wednesday is a board meeting so it is always a lot of work getting ready for those.

But the quilts keep crossing the finish line!

We are finally close to having all of these Jewel Box quilts completed. I think there are just four more tops that need quilting.

Oh Scrap! Snowballs from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week, I finished all 99 snowball blocks for a Many Hands and Many Hearts donation quilt.

I laid the blocks out on the floor and then picked them up and stacked them so I can sew them up into a quilt top sometime in the future. Right now, I am sewing up some Jewel Box blocks so the snowballs have to wait. We have just a few more tops to make and we will be done with the Jewel Box block drive, so that is the priority right now.

It is time to come up with the next scrap ...

Weekly update: Easter and a finish! from With Strings Attached

I hope your Easter weekend was pleasant. In fourth grade we had a unit about weather lore. The one saying I remember is "if it rains on Easter Sunday it will rain every Sunday for the next seven weeks." It rained yesterday. Maybe this year I will remember to keep track. Rogue red threads - at least it's not gold! from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

Don't ask me about the comments on the blog or how they work. Sometimes people's names appear with the comment, sometimes comments are posted anonymously, and at other times, their status changes. Others want to comment, but they cannot. I have NO idea why. I should investigate the matter. Maybe there's some help feature that I can find.

Tracking from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

Most things we buy online or send have a means of tracking them. I recently bought two large items online (CDN store, which was the only way I could purchase the items). OK, one of the items I could have bought in the store, but I didn't.
