5 quilts progress from Making A Lather

Here is my 5 quilts progress report.

1.checkered past -I have sewed a sashing to the right side of all the blocks. the next step is to join the blocks into rows using the sashings. I got this far at an open sew saturday.

2. fish school - this is a year long project for the quiltville leader/ender challenge. I have made a goal to sew 10 blocks before I can move on to the next quilt. I finished the 10 and added a few more.

3. scrappy mountain majesties - I have made additional blocks for an old ufo ...

Triangle Trees from Ellyn's Place

Who else loves a good sew-along? I was excited when Nicholas Ball announced another Improv Triangle Sew-along this month. His improv book is one of my very favorites and his triangle method is the best. First I thought, can I do this? I don't want to neglect my Through Ellyn's Eyes project. boo. Then I thought, wait! What if I make it part of my project?! Jackpot.

This time around, Nicholas encouraged us to make our triangles holiday trees. I pulled the colors from my project that speak Christmas to me, Kona Red, Chartreuse, Glacier and Capri with ...

Idaho Quilt Retreat.....Day 3 & 4 from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I continue to work with my hand dyes...

I challenged myself to see just how far

I could go with curved piecing...

this top has no puckers, flat as a board !

I am using leftover strips and scraps

to create a border treatment

for the curved top...

Playing around with improv blocks...

I am liking the bold X blocks

to balance out all of those curves...

I also tried improv flying geese,

but they aren't the right fit...

The improv floating triangles blocks

seem to work in the borders...

Okay, I have a plan...

now to create more blocks ...

Welcoming Lamp from Ellyn's Place

I've been working on a very special quilt  for a while now, and I'm happy to share it with you today. This is Welcoming Lamp.......

There's quite a story behind this one, so get yourself a cup of tea and settle in.

Several months ago, through the wonders of the internet (instagram and Zoom) I met Karen Bolan, a gifted modern quilter from California. Karen and I quickly realized we had several shared passions, the biggest being a passion for inclusive community and a love of collaboration. Both of us enjoy sharing lectures on collaboration with guilds ...

Down the Rabbit Hole from Ellyn's Place

I've finished the 12th quilt in my Through Ellyn's Eyes series and it is a bright and happy one. I'm calling it Down the Rabbit Hole because several people mentioned that it had an Alice in Wonderland vibe to it.

Basically, this is a very improv log cabin, if you look closely, with a very loose courthouse steps layout (warm colors on the sides, cool colors top and bottom). I'm prepping to teach an improv log cabin class and thought it would be awesome to add some more samples to my class prep. The finished mini ...

Improv.....Zip Case from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

The rain ran us out of plowing the hay fields

so I am taking the day to play !

I think this was my Improv 6 technique

that I was playing with back in 2020...

Free hand cutting and curved piecing...

I made about 6 feet of this

and there it sat...

I pulled it off the shelf,  cut off a hunk of it

and made this zip case:

Improv Zip Case

Side 1

Side 2

Interior.....Blue Squares Batik

I squared up the bottom

and added a leftover zipper end on the side.

This was great FUN !

I had an ...

Comedy Club Telephone Quilts from Ellyn's Place

Recently my improv small group, Comedy Club Quilters, did a "Telephone Quilts" activity. We had so much fun! Read on to find out how we got from this adorable dog photo to this final quilt...

First, Loide's daughters sent her this darling photo as inspiration for her quilt. None of the rest of us got to see it at this point...

We had decided ahead of time that all of us would make 14" square quilts based on our inspiration. Here is what Loide made in response to the photo....
Then Loide sent a photo of her quilt to ...

My turn for...Blog Hop for Scrappy Improv Quilting from Sew Sunshine

Today is the day........My turn on the Scrappy Improv Quilting blog hop for Kelly Young @My Quilt Infatuation. My quilt is the "Improv Chapel Window" quilt. Very stained glass like improv scraps. Kelly used solids in the book for this quilt and I decided to use whatever was in my scrap bin. I made a sunrise rainbow-like style going from light to dark fabrics. I think it has a sunlight feel!

 Measures 22" x 22"

Kelly's book is filled with improv mini quilts with easy to follow instructions. Kelly is a hero of mine when it comes to ...

Country Church Quilt from Ellyn's Place

Quilt #9 in my Through Ellyn's Eyes series is finished and it makes me really happy. It's a simple little country church and it has a lot of meaning for me.
Two of my late great uncles were Presbyterian ministers. This has carried on through the generations. I am still a Presbyterian today and my faith is an important piece of who I am.The uncle I knew best was Uncle Les. His church was a sweet little country church in upstate New York. In addition to pastoring, Uncle Les and Aunt Delia had a farm. Mostly they ...

Positivity QAL - Winners from Sew Preeti Quilts

We have come to the end of our journey.  This is the final stop in the Positivity QAL 2021.

It took many emails, phone calls, scribbles and scrawls, and test blocks.  There were a couple of disappointments but many pleasant surprises. My hope was a dozen new quilts for the Mercyful Hospital. Bernie tells me that we have 19.  So far.

From Janine (Quilts from the Little House)

From Mary (Quilting is in my Blood)

I know Diann's quilt is in progress. Joy is working on (at least) two quilts and quilting one flimsy received from Astrid. Mari is ...

Improv Holding Space Bee Blocks from Goer

Last month, I created blocks for E. A. She asked us "to think about how it feels when someone holds space for you and allows you to be who you are in a place that is safe. Alternatively, you could think about how it feels when you hold space for someone." She asked for abstract blocks created in pairs, with no limit on colors.

These pairs of blocks were created in parallel with each other. I didn't make one block and then copy it. I made two blocks at the same time. Since they are improv you can see ...

Improv Alphabet Quilt Blocks from Goer

This summer I started co-hosting the Quilts Unscripted Bee with a group of 10 quilters. It is an improv quilt bee and every month the host for the month gives us a prompt. These can vary greatly. There might be a limited palette. The prompt might be about a feeling, or a style, or creating something representational.

Sarah Ruiz kicked off our first month in June with a really fun one. She gave us a limited color palette and asked us to use solids. Then she had a sign up for each person to pick some letters of the alphabet ...

Right now the quilt measures 70 x 60 inches...

168 Blocks

I will fill in with solid white fabric

all along the edges...

This work table has been cleared off...

I am piecing the vertical rows...

The left over strips will wait for a future project.

This has been a great summer project...

Improv 9 Patch......Design Wall Progress from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This Improv 9 Patch continues to be my

summer piecing project:

This is what it looked like the last time

you saw it...

Here it is today:

I have been adding more white blocks

around the edges...

I need to piece a few more white blocks

for the bottom edge.

I will eventually add solid white blocks

around all of the edges and the quilt

will fade away to completely white

and the colored blocks will appear to float

in the center.....that's the plan anyway.

All of the hay fields have been mowed,

raked and baled...

We ...

Triangle Play from Ellyn's Place

Do you have a favorite shape? I love triangles. More than all of the other shapes! I'm not sure why, although I do love things in odd numbers (three sides anyone?). I love to play with triangles in improv quilting so it seemed like a natural place to go next with my Through Ellyn's Eyes series.

I originally intended to make more triangles in several colors, but, I'll be honest, I got bored with it. So, Kona Orange and Kona Tangerine it is, with tiny pieced lines in Kona White. This finishes at just 12" square.

I ...

City Windows from Ellyn's Place

Quilt #3 in my Through Ellyn's Eyes series came together in the same fast and furious method as quilt #2! Once an idea pops into my head, it just cries out to be made. I began piecing this one on Saturday and put the final stitches in the faced binding this afternoon. whew!

Though remotely inspired by photos of buildings I have perused on Pinterest, it doesn't really resemble any of them. I knew I wanted to do the windows with tiny borders, a technique I have played with several times in the past. I drew a simple ...

Casting a Light from Ellyn's Place

Casting a Light, the second quilt in my Through Ellyn's Eyes series, came together fast and furiously. In fact, from start to finish it was only one day. whew.

First my inspiration. I am often inspired by buildings, especially older buildings, and structures like bridges. Apparently I also have a thing for lampposts, as I have taken quite a few photos of them in different cities over the years. These two in London:

Recently, my friend Lisa posted a photo she took of a lamppost in France, which got me thinking about them again. Then on retreat last week ...
