On the Bookshelf from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

I am a voracious reader. We are a family of avid readers. I always have one audio book, one physical book, and one Kindle book going. I read a variety of books. I love memoir, biography, historical fiction and non- fiction and mystery / thriller (no gore please), and literary fiction. I'm not a big fan of fantasy (but loved The Ten Thousand Doors of January) or Science Fiction (but

This week's activities from The Cozy Quilter

In a previous post, I was lamenting the thickness of the pitcher plant stem in my rug hooking project.  A couple of hooking friends suggested I try hooking  a single line of stitches with two strands of yarn.  This looks so much better!  If you look at the part at the lower end of the stem where the green leaves are hooked around the stem, it looks to be the right width now. You can see from this picture that I got almost all of the leaves done this week.  I hope to move on to the flowers this week ...

Liberty's Birds, Teeny Stitches, Spring Signs, and A Getaway from Canadian Needle Nana

A few photos of a reluctant spring here..

The largest turtle I've seen at our little pond.
Then I realized he wasn't alone. There must be others about too.
I've pulled a few fabrics to work on Block 2 of Liberty's Birds.
This is perhaps my favorite block. Do you think that is the glorious eagle?  And one of my favourite motifs, a wreath is on this Block 2 which is called Justice's Wreath
To do with cross stitching, I did a test using one strand of thread over two as suggested by readers.  I ...

Easter Baskets on the digital cutter from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

AHA --- Someone mentioned that it might help if one person read the EXIT story. That's what we typically do, except this is a graphic novel, so that won't work. We'll each read and then collaborate on the puzzle solving. We didn't get a chance last night as DH was working late.

I must remember to focus on what I did! But that's usually what I do on the blog anyway. It's kind of a recap of everything that happened the day before!

Oh, the second thing I made on my digital cutter arrived at ...

Christmas in April Photos, 4 at a Time HST's, Floralies Thinking and Embroidering from Canadian Needle Nana

Spring has been put on pause while we had a day and half snowstorm starting Tuesday and actually have had light snow falling every day since. Lots of the fresh stuff on the ground and trees; it makes for pretty photos. So Christmassy....big sigh.

We've had snow much later than this here so I'm not that upset. Though still below freezing overnight,   it's getting to be more pleasant by noon so this snow won't last.  And in spite of this or to spite it, my mind has turned to gardening thoughts. I'm interested in ...

List making is fun! from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

I love lists! Lists make me feel in control! This little apple did not fall far from the tree. My mom keeps tons of information, but most of it is useless, like tracking the amount that the telethon (they still have those out west) raised over the last 50 years. Now, that's a list I can do without! However, I have to say that having a list like that and keeping track of it for 50 years is a feat!

My most extensive lists are book-related!

Back in the day, and I could not find an exact date, there ...

What I've Been Up To The Last Four Days from Canadian Needle Nana

We had it very foggy with wild wind and pouring rain here in our corner of Ontario this weekend. There was a fog and rainfall warning -there are always weather warnings these days it seems. It is still very gray and windy this morning. Ned and I were sorry to see so many of the trees have lost branches. The white snowbanks are littered. But it is an old forest here on the property and we have to have these March winds to bring on those May flowers...eventually. The path along the left fence line always floods in spring ...

Clerestorylines: Quilting meets Mid-Century from Dueling Threads

In late 2024 I participated in a quilting event associated with the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild. The ask was to create a house themed quilt that would be shown during a homes tour in Kansas City. One of those homes was of Mid-Century Modern design. When I was searching for inspiration, I came across a pattern called “Clerestory”, by textile artist Debbie Grifka. I found it in Fons and Porter’s Love of Quilting magazine in May/June 2016. She also published a book in 2016 called Lines By Design Quilts that contains this pattern. I knew instantly that ...

Binding and Finn's Approval from The Cozy Quilter

It's been a busy week and I have not had much time to sew but I did manage to hand sew the bindings on the two quilts I showed in my last post.  The shadow box quilt has gray binding, the same as the shadows on the quilt.

Finn approves of the potato chip baby quilt.

Here is a close up of the backing fabric--I love the paper boats print!

My daughter's book blanket is coming along with nine new squares added in February.

These squares represent two books read in March so far.

Here are the books ...

Scrappy Saturday from Urban Quilter

Horse panel quilt top

I have been working on creating quilts for my guild's charity quilt project -- A Quilted Gift. Among the donated fabrics for the project was a large bin FULL of Western/horse/cowboy prints which I have been creating quilts (and kits) from. My latest finished top is super scrappy with lots of 3.5" squares. This design is a variation on a pattern from Cut the Scraps

The next top I am putting together will use lots of scrap strips to frame some western-themed panels. I will be using the same design I used for ...

Knitting, Cross Stitch, Crochet and a Weekend Away from The Cozy Quilter

My scarf that I am making with the yarn I purchased in Cow Head, Newfoundland in 2023 is getting longer-- 32" or 82cm long now.  It takes a long time to make a scarf! I will keep knitting...it would be nice to be able to wear it this winter!

Just a little bit more to do on the Winter Woods cross stitch.  There are some clouds in the sky above the mountains to add and some stars in the sky in several places on the entire picture.  The deer got its tail this week too--I forgot to do it ...

Why I Don't Mind Extreme Cold and Other Thoughts from Canadian Needle Nana

How are you...snowed in or sweltering in the summer heat?  The new year has started with wild and horrible weather around the globe. Heartbreaking to see devastation on such a scale in California. It makes us appreciate what is a normal winter so far here in the Ottawa valley. Wind chills of over -20 many days but you can have all the gear to layer up and keep warm on walks while out and about. I notice some folks have very fashionable, and what I would call, even beautiful winter outer wear. Mine tends to be more utilitarian and ...

Sewing Day with Friends from The Cozy Quilter

This has been a busy week in the sewing department!  I have decided to rejoin the Rainbow Scrap Challenge again this year after a 1 year hiatus.  My scraps are in bad need of being tamed!  January's colour is pink so here are my two projects so far.  I may add one more but I'm not sure yet.  I have a pile of  white 2.5" squares with small scale prints on them.  I have had them for a few years and decided to use them for the centres of these hollow nine patch blocks each month.  I ...

More Presents, Cakes and Stitching Notes from Canadian Needle Nana

A crisp -23 C wind chill out there this morning. I'll bundle up for the morning walk, maybe even break out my balaclava. I'm now filling two bird feeders with black sunflower seeds. These little guys are getting snacks from the ground.

I have my little 2025 planner ready to go. I looked at many fancy and even beautiful ones and in the end opted for this $5 one at the Dollar Store. It ticked all the boxes for what I need. Beside it is the new address book I bought from Amazon. It has a special section ...

Presents-Old and New and Quilty Too from Canadian Needle Nana

I had to give up my quilty table for a couple of days. It sported the thrifted vintage Santa table cloth and displayed my second hand store Petit Point dish set. Both big bargains and well loved by me

I received the annual Christmas planter from Tony's kind former inlaws. They specify it be a plant or two I can grow and it never fails to make me happy. More about the plants later. There is Ned snoozing away in the background.
My retired librarian sister always sends me a book and it is always completely appropriate. It is ...

Slow Stitching in the Car and My Daughter's Crochet from The Cozy Quilter

We spent some time in the car this past week, driving our daughter home to where she and Finn live so that gave me some time to do some cross stitching. I should be able to finish this quadrant off this week and then on to the fourth and final quadrant.  This is a great winter project!

Our daughter worked on her crocheted Christmas blanket when she was home.  She is working on the gingerbread border right now.  There is a white wavy "Icing" line to add and then more of the gold colour.  Then, there are 80 little "candies ...

The decluttering continues from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

Stand up, sit down!

Even though I was supposed to be at my desk, writing, I needed to get back upstairs. I wanted to continue the momentum and finish the year - well, start the new year with those rooms in order.

This is what happened.

While the guest room was more or less organized, some of my stuff had been moved to Studio U for the big clean-up, and some had not been put away. This was the state of the room when I walked in.

Studio U is a bit messy

Stuff from the guest room

These are all ...
