Still unpacking from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! I feel like I have to ask how everyone is doing every time I speak to someone now, so-- how are you all doing? I am feeling better than I have since March. Not only have I been out a few times and seen some lovely friends and picked out my own produce for once, but all this time I've also been teaching a summer class, which is now done. Done! I turned in the grades today and I am so remarkably happy.  It's been a long haul, and now I get a (somewhat shorter) summer ...

Drawing the curtains from The Academic Quilter

Hello all! How's it going in your corner of the universe? Lots going on here, as we are finally getting some remodeling done, which had been postponed by the virus. We seem to have this thing where we buy houses that need some love and then make ourselves crazy getting them to where we want them to be. I have to tell you that this is the hardest time we've had getting contractors to even show up. No clue why this is, because boy, they are charging us plenty to do the work. More expensive even than Delaware ...

After the Storm, at Dusk from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I've finally completed this little art quilt. This one started out with the frame. I had one that Richard had made but I'd measured incorrectly, so it was just sitting, waiting for something. This sunset is my rendition of a photo I took one evening after a rainstorm.

I wanted to emphasize the contrast of dark and light clouds. To do that I broke up the light sky with deep, royal purples and blues.

And to add some shimmer to the light clouds, I tacked on a shiny organza, which was a difficult, messy chore.

And so there ...

A hideous quilt takes shape . . . maybe? from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

A few days ago I pulled this last piece from the Sherry Lynn Wood workshop that I attended back in November. It had been bothering me that 1.) I didn't like it and 2.) it was taunting me, if you will. I determined that I needed to use it or chop it. Either way, something had to happen.

So I decided to first try to use it as is. Once chopped, there's no going back, soo....
I liked the almost Dresden plate section, so why not start there. I made several chunks of rounded shapes, mostly in blue ...

I've created a quilt monster! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Marley has been sewing with me quite a bit. She made face masks for her family, handkerchiefs for her Poppa, and a pair of shorts for herself. Two days ago she decided that it's time to make another quilt.

This is probably the third design attempt

I had an idea. I'd keep her busy with small pieces. We decided on 2½" X 6" patches. Well, that didn't work. Firstly, I won't let her use the rotary cutter, so I had lots of pieces to cut.

A few changes

Next, she was supposed to take some time ...

blue blocks from Making A Lather

This is the last Saturday in April for the rainbow scrap challenge. I need to make sure all my projects have their blue on. This is the shine block.

And this is the scraptastic star quilt. I may have enough blocks to assemble the quilt, if, I like the colors that I have together.

This is the row x row quilt. This quilt calls for 2 of every color and row. This year I have only been making one row of each color and style. I haven't decided if I will make up rows on colors that are not ...

tiny blocks from Making A Lather

I found several blue scrap pieces small enough for the houses and the wonky stars. Note to self, If I start with houses, I will automatically have little triangles for the stars. Rumor has it that Kathy from Sane, crazy, crumby quilts is working on her top of tiny houses. She was the inspiration for these cute blocks. I can't wait to see it.

I don't really like making the stars - it takes longer than it looks, but, they are so cute, and I feel so virtuous using such little bits. Blue is the color for April for ...

cute block from Making A Lather

I think it is Saturday again and time for the rainbow scrap challenge. The color for April is light / bright blue. I started with 1 1/2 inch scraps and made a few country roads blocks. I like to make these blocks. The cutting is super easy, and the sewing is quick. I might like to try these in a different size. I have 2 inch and 2 1/2 inch strips in the scrap pile. hmm

We have had interesting weather this Spring - Some days in the 70s and yesterday, frost that looked more like snow. We have had ...

The stars at night from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! I hope you are all feeling well and healthy, and that no one is going too stir crazy yet. This is a weird and challenging time, isn't it? It's like a slow-motion science fiction movie right now. Lots of stress and lots of strange things happening. Who ever thought we would live through a time when half our country is locked down? I hope you're all coping okay.

Well, I'll bet you can figure out my coping strategy! I've made myself a schedule since I'm teaching all online now and I want ...

Stitching out the stress from The Academic Quilter

Hello all, and happy Friday the 13th!  Just what we need, right? Gosh, I hope you all are having a much better time than I am right now. I want to keep this light, so I'll just say that my university has shut down, like many many others, and we are moving all of our classes online. This is *much* harder than it sounds. It's Thursday night as I write this, and I've already put in about 55 hours this week, with more to come. Why cancel meetings when you can have them all online? Why not ...

Child's play from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! Hope you have had a good week! Painting continues at our house, and the place is looking much brighter and sunnier. Much less depressing all the way around.  And hey-- has anyone else noticed that the spell check button is gone on Blogger? This is annoying, so if anything is misspelled today, it's because my eyes were too tired to proofread properly. I need that button back!

I'm just popping in today to show a small child's quilt top that I finished off this week. I had made a resolution that I would stop posting ...

Drawstring Baskets from Quilting Stories

Drawstring basket

Drawstring basket

Drawstring basket

Since some time I wish to sew drawstring baskets for my grandchildren. After searching on Pinterest and on various blogs, I was lucky to find a really great tutorial on this blog : Threading My Way. I must say that I never found such a perfect tutorial, so well explained that you cannot make any mistake. I followed step by step the explanations and had not the least problem. I sewed the orange basket first, and was so satisfied with the result that next day I did a blue one. Tomorrow a pink one! Thank you Pam for Australia!

I chose ...

Sewing Projects for a Full Heart (and Bobbin)! from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

When someone is covered in a cozy, warm quilt, they are reminded that someone sat at a sewing machine for hours, carefully piecing and stitching, with them in mind. A handmade table runner sitting on the family dining table shows a loving home to all who feast there. To be gifted a wall hanging is a reminder that they are loved by its maker.

Valentine’s day is one of the best holidays to make for because it’s about love and we LOVE to make! Here are some sweet as pie project ideas:

A jump start from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! Long time no see! I don't know what's wrong with me lately, but I seem to be in a bit of a creative slump. This doesn't happen to me all that often, and it is definitely no fun. Do you think it's related to moving and having all kinds of personal upheaval in my life right now? Hmmmm. . .

Whatever it is, I need to get out of this, so I decided to do the only thing that I know for sure will perk me up-- start a new project. Sure, I have a ton ...

Remembrance & QOV from Nestlings By Robin

REMEMBRANCE REVISITED
I met Terry and Ruth at Fall Paducah in September. They are involved with Quilts of Valor and we discussed what a great kit my 'Remembrance' quilt would be for that organization.
Then the fun idea of miniaturizing the design was introduced to the conversation and I knew there should be enough fabric from the kit to make a mini because Connecting Threads is very generous with their kits.

I cannot express how exciting it is to receive pictures of completed quilts from makers!  Thank you, Terry and Ruth, for sharing your lovely work with all of us ...

A Brilliant Cut Mini Quilt from Goer

This weekend was full of blue!

On my way home from seeing Blue Man Group (and enjoying a tasty blue cocktail) I realized that I needed to start and finish this mini quilt to share with you today for the Fat Quarter Shop Sew Solid Remix. Thankfully I already had a plan and had pulled the fabric above to choose from.

A Brilliant Cut is a mini quilt pattern available from Fat Quarter Shop as part of their Sew Solids series. I opted for a sapphire on a silver band since my engagement ring has a sapphire. The free pattern ...

Yellow and blue and fuzzy, too from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! I hope you have had a great week. This week I finished up one of the very hardest things I have done to date, which is saying something, because I raised three kids.  But it's done now, and I am so happy I could sew something. So I did!

As you may know, I have a closet full of tops just waiting to be quilted.  As you don't know, and I didn't either until this week, I also have an office that was apparently built on an iceberg. It's really cold in there, and ...

rainbow tiny tuesday from Making A Lather

Every Tuesday at the rainbow scrap challenge, Angela offers us a new tiny Tuesday block.
I need to spend time making those blocks that I missed. Every one I make, I fall in love with when it is done. I don't have a design wall, so I haven't seen them together yet. I am really looking forward seeing the colors play together.

A Modern Take on a Classic Sampler Quilt from Quilted Joy

There are a few quilts that every quilter should make at some point in their quilting career. Everyone should make a scrappy quilt, because of all the remnants that we gather over the years. What else are you going to do with them? Everyone should make a quilt for charity. It is just good for the soul.

Mary Jo's modern sampler quilt, quilting by Angela Huffman

And everyone should make a sampler quilt. It doesn’t matter if you are a traditionalist or a modernist, a sampler quilt is a great way to try multiple blocks and create something beautiful. A classic sampler quilt would have the different blocks ...
