Retreat Finish (the second one) from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Before I show you my new finish, I thought I'd show you what is going on in the studio. It is not a happy sight, is it? Ahh, that's how it goes. Chances are that it's never going to embroider again.

Not that it has embroidered any for me anyway. Firstly, it made horrible stitches. Secondly, as we discovered today, the gizmo that holds the PC card is broken. So I have hundreds of designs that I can't use.

The news gets worse: I've invested more money in the machine than it's worth. Have ...

Sew Melodic: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Sew Melodic colour scheme from Clever Chameleon
Try it button

June is “Try It” month for the Island Batik Ambassadors, where we get free rein to choose a technique that we haven’t done before and give it a whirl on any project. New technique, Island Batik fabrics; that’s it for the rules.

So, I thought – “It is about time I tried the traditional method of paper-piecing”….. you know the one….. the method with the actual foundation paper. </p>

Pink Blooms and Turquoise Maidens from Sew Preeti Quilts

It is that time of the year - SPRING!!!

Washington Monument in Washington DC

Cherry blossoms get all the hype.

Cherry Blossoms

But this is my favorite flowering tree this time of the year in this part of the world.  Do you know the name? Please let me know.

My favorite tree/flowers

I love these deep pink, thick and fluffy blooms.

The tree in full bloom

The color is brighter, the flowers are more substantial and the blooms last days longer than the ephemeral cherry blossoms.

Thick blooms

Imagine these buds at the edge of a sweetheart neckline. You see ...

Update 1 – 2019 Squares in Squares from Lotus Cove Quilting

2019 Squares in Squares completed top
I’ve completed piecing the top, measuring 72×108. The bottom two rows are tucked under – too long for my design wall!
Next step is using all the leftover fabric strips to piece the back. I’m hoping it will look like a giant square bulls-eye. Stay tuned for more!

A Touch of Teal ~~ Finished! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I've had this little pink top sitting in the quilt queue for a while now. It had everything needed for a finish: backing, batting, binding.

"How easy and quick would this be?," I wondered. "Quite easy and especially quick," I answered.

So I loaded it and thought about quilt motifs. I wanted, as Richard loves to say, "Quick, fast and in a hurry."

While quilt my last quilt, I stumbled upon a motif I like that is fast and pretty. It has the look and feel of a pantograph, except that it changes at random rather than repeat in ...

2019 – Squares in Squares from Lotus Cove Quilting

Here’s a view of my design wall today. This project is using lots of fabrics from my stash. Only purchase so far was one yard for the center squares. The blocks should finish 12″ square, making a single-sized quilt.

Squares In Squares on Design Wall

Note on design walls: I used anti-pill fleece on this wall, wrapped over insulation panels. Fleece holds much better than flannel. Completed blocks would rarely stick to my old flannel wall unless I pinned them. No problem with the fleece.

Basket Project – 2018-19 from Lotus Cove Quilting

It started with a gift exchange at Rochester Modern Quilt Guild. We were to make a small container or basket to exchange with other members at our January meeting. Here’s the one I made for the exchange:

The interior fabric is from Mali, and the handles are riveted-on leather tabs. The pattern I found was so great, I also used it to make some Christmas gifts.

These went to my sister-in-law and husband, to coordinate with her MacKenzie-Childs collection. Handles were made from the same fabric as the binding, with wire inserts.

These cat-themed baskets were gifts for my ...

Beary Colourful BOM: Taking Time Out Teal Bear from Clever Chameleon

Teal Bear of Taking Time Out appliqué by Dione of Clever Chameleon

Today we meet the most chilled out bear of the Beary Colourful family. Please welcome the blue-green Teal Bear of Taking Time Out!

Teal Bear is ready for a holiday. Or a weekend of leisure. Or even just a few hours of unbooked time. He loves taking time out of his busy schedule to smell the roses or shoot the breeze. Today he is in the mood to head down the beach without any particular plan….. build a sand castle, collect some shells, have a paddle, or maybe just get some sand between his toes. Uncomplicated time with a few ...

  • There are only two sleeps until the 11th Beary Colorful Bear arrives and sneak peeks are in full swing on Facebook.
  • We get to start thinking about my favourite part of the colour wheel… Blue-Green for November.
  • And my boy is nearly 8. Turns out, he is suddenly developing quite the sense of humour….

Even though I haven ...

Peacock Batik: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

Peacock Feather Batik color scheme at Clever Chameleon

This week I’m crushing on  November’s fabric!

How do you like this peacock feather batik? Glorious, isn’t it? At least, it is to me. I bought this on a whim a while back, knowing that November’s Beary Colourful Bear would be teal.

2018 color challengeTeal is hands down my favourite colour. So I probably had stash I could have used for November’s teal challenge…. But. I love peacock feathers and this fabric had my name on it. I know at the time it was an impulse buy, and I had other priorities….. but I’m totally wondering ...

Thankful Wreath Quilt with Sweet Peas from Clever Chameleon

Give Thanks Always wreath quilt concept by Clever Chameleon

Tuesday and a half ago, I said I was starting on a thanksgiving-themed wall quilt in Blossom Batiks – Splash fabrics. It’s getting there…..

Blossoms Batik Splash fabrics by RJR at Clever ChameleonWhen my samples of Blossom Batiks – Splash fabrics from RJR arrived in the post, the first thing they reminded me of was sweet pea flowers. Probably because my hubby’s Gran used to grow sweet peas every year, in colours not dissimilar to these. Blue-green leaves and two-tone purple flowers.

And as it turns out, this was a very helpful association to have. Because, as well as the October Beary Colourful bears, I had promised RJR ...

Blossom Batiks Splash: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

Blossom Batiks Splash color scheme by Clever Chameleon

Teal with red-violet and blue-violet. Now I’m inspired!

Have you seen these recent fabrics from RJR Fabrics? Today’s colour board is created from this really beautiful subset of the current RJR Blossom Batiks – Splash collection. Aren’t they glorious?

These colours are consuming a lot of my attention at the moment. Hopefully you’ve caught up with yesterday’s release of the tenth bear in the Beary Colourful BOM…. and saw the blue-violet RJR fabrics used there.  Of course, September’s bear was red-violet. And November’s will be teal. But that’s not where my current obsession ...

Mallee Ringneck Parrot: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Linky Party from Clever Chameleon

Mallee Ringneck Parrot color scheme from Clever Chameleon

Hello!! We are back safely from the Outback.

Which means I have internet and phone coverage again. And that means that I will be slowly catching up on all your lovely comments and seeing what everyone else has been doing on their blogs recently. Being off grid is nice for a while, but quilting is really quite a socially centred pursuit, don’t you think?

The technical isolation of the Outback does have an upside…. for me, heading bush is a time of mental clearing, and of gathering fresh inspiration. Space and time to think and muse over possibilities. Usually ...

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: Sea Glass from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

my pot of succulents and sea glass
Several weeks ago, I discovered a few
bags of sea glass in the studio. I used them to decorate a pot of succulents. After doing so, I realized how much I love the colors.

The light blue/green is my favorite and I've decided to use it in our bedroom and bathroom. We'll be quite some time before getting to the stage of choosing paint and accessories, but I think I have my colors already.

a close up

To that end, sea glass has been on my brain. Of course, I ...

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: TURQUOISE from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Image result for turquoise green
(Like my brain can differentiate this beautiful mess)
Do you find it difficult distinguishing between those blue-green colors that we call turquoise, teal, and aqua? I do. It seems that every time I name a color in this family, my artist friend reminds me that it's actually something else.

The problem is not being corrected, it's remembering which is which even after the many, many reminders. Kind of like recognizing a face but not being able to put a name to it. Guess what? Google knows the difference! Of course, right.

Not only did I find an explanation ...

Colour Inspiration Tuesday – Blue Moon Fabrics from Clever Chameleon

Blue Moon colour scheme from Clever Chameleon

March is “Try a New Technique” Month for the Island Batik Ambassador team, and I’m feeling inspired!

Try a new technique?!! You’ll never likely have to ask me twice!! I have loooooong lists of quilty things I want to try “one day”…. patterns to make, gadgets to play with, embellishments and paints and markers and machines and .attachments and ……. and …… and……. and that doesn’t include the countless really cool things I have seen and forgotten along the way. “Try a New Technique” is practically my quilting motto!

Finishing a project I’ve started while trying a new ...
