Elephants Tails and a new Collar from Romany Quilting

There's been plenty of hand work happening here lately.  One of my goals was to hand stitch tails and eyes on to my three families of elephants.   There is Mother elephant, her older calves and the two babies in each family.  A couple of afternoons spent sitting quietly and the job was done.

Elephants tails and eyes

Once that job was done, it shouldn't take me too long to assemble the rows.  This is my number two project in the Chookshed Challenge for February and I would really like to get this top assembled by the end of ...

Announcing New Stitch Along: Deck the Halls from Jo's Country Junction

Yahoo!! It’s time to announce a new stitch-along. This time we are going with a small quick stitch that you could likely get done in a few nights. We know that the holidays are a busy time and didn’t want to pick a big piece. We also know that some of the most popular stitch …

Along The Way... from From the Strawberry Patch...

I've learned a LOT along the way while the wrist is healing. Time doesn't slow down, or stop, when one's casted. Nope, it's business as usual. Augie turned eleven months old on Wednesday! He's my best snuggle buddy and resting companion when I need that. I can tell when I've done enough for the day and it's time to lay low. Fine motor skills are slowly returning and strengthening, (I can pinch

Sister Stitcher from From the Strawberry Patch...

If you remember from last week, our youngest granddaughter was eager to learn hand embroidery. She came and stayed a few days with us; guess what was first and foremost on her list of things to do! In this photo she's exhibiting all of the basic stitches that she accomplished on day one: running stitch, backstitch, split stitch, chain stitch, satin stitch, lazy daisy, fishbone and, finally,

tah dah . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Monday mornings just feel like a good time for a new post. I've accumulated a week's worth of doings, the weekend is fresh behind me, and the coming week stretches out like a blank canvas before me.

Well, not entirely blank, but you know what I mean. :)

Our trip to Vandy went well.  The prognosis didn't change, but we left feeling lighter-hearted and better educated about what exactly we're dealing with.
Todd was supposed to have chemo this week (the part of the canvas that isn't blank), but when he went in for labs this ...

Camp Stitches from Joy of Quilting

 Camp Stitching

Last week we Camped for three nights in Pembrey Country Park  South Wales.
It was perfect weather for Sitting & Stitching
In between sightseeing.
Camping Pembrey Country Park

Ours is the Blue Tent on the left.

Feathered Friends

We had three regular visitors while we were there.
The Robin The Pigeon & The Blackbird

The Pigeon was ringed and very tame.
The Robin was quite cheeky and almost came inside our tent a few times!
And The Blackbird was collecting food to take back to his nest. We did see Mrs Blackbird too but she was much more wary of us and kept her distance.

The Stitching Inspector

Mr Blackbird ...

If Your Life Were A Quilt... from From the Strawberry Patch...

...what would it look like?  Think about that for a second. Would it be bright all over or would it contain dark areas? Would it have mistakes, inconsistent stitches, small rips and tears that may have been mended (or not), star points missing here and there or would it be perfect? Would each block be similar or would there be variety? What would your life-as-a-quilt reveal?  I recently attended

Quilting Trends for 2023 on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Me stitching in my studio watching the Mentalist...again

Okay, let's face it.  I'm not one for following trends.  I'm the type that decides what is good for me and mine and then goes in that direction.  I do, however, keep track of trends, just because it's good to stay informed.  I recently got Timna Tarr's latest newsletter and it mentioned that handwork is becoming more of a trend on the national scene.  That I can see.  You hear of handwork everywhere these days.  First English paper piecing made a resurgence with the Millefiori Quilts ...

Works in Progress on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Really I have no idea where the week has gone!  I've been working all day and then stitching for a few hours every night.  One thing I can say is that being this productive really doesn't make for really interesting blogging!  (sorry!) So I thought  I would just show you the progress I've made on my three main projects!

Project I - Homeward Bound BOM  Quilt - Month 2

OMGoodness!!  How could it take me this long to hand applique these little suckers?!?  When I first started quilting (BT - before Tessa), I would do hand applique blocks in the ...

Homeward Bound BOM Month 2 on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Ya know, even though I don't put much belief in astrology, I can totally see myself fitting nicely under

the sign Gemini.  It's like two people living in my head.  This week it was totally pointed out to me...again.  For the last few years, I've been busy in my quilt studio designing original work and creating it with my Janome.  This month, I've become totally obsessed with the exact opposite.  I have two, yes count 'em two, pattern quilts going at once both mostly done by hand.  Well to be fair, Rain, Rain started out ...

"Gnome-shave" November (or How to Attach a Beard) from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Instead of "No-shave November," over here it is "Gnome-shave November," as our gentleman gnome has a fun and curly beard! We have used curly wool to give some great texture to our gnome's beard, and the curly wool is available as part of the embellishments in our wool kit. While it might look complicated, we have broken the process down for you in a series of pictures.

Use just a small amount of curly wool—it doesn't take much.

Roll it around in your hands until you have a small, slightly compacted ball of wool.

Pull apart the ...

Flora and Fauna from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Almost 5 years ago, we started a project called Flora and Fauna of Germany. I (Kara) can't believe it has been that long! We began the project as a way to use up our scraps of wool and cotton with simple blocks inspired by the flora and fauna I would see on my walks in Germany with our two hounds. We released 16 blocks over the course of the next two years—one in cotton and one in wool—and loved being able to have the opportunity to bring nature to life with interesting threads, fabrics, and stitches. Once ...

Found: Stitch Samples on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

This week I've continued on with the spring cleaning of my dressing room which houses the clothes I don't wear all that much and the stash that I don't use that much.  When I say "That Much",  up until I started this it's been a long while since I had been in there.  The clothes have been easy.  So far 12 13-gallon bags have gone to the Salvation Army.  Apparently, when you work for a women's clothing retailer you tend to accumulate a lot of clothes.  Now the stash, well that's another story.

I ...

Home Again from Romany Quilting

We are home again after our recent trip to Hawkes Bay to attend my sister’s Kathleen’s Memorial Service.  Here are a few highlights of our time away.  What could be better than fish and chips for our evening meal the day we arrived?  The Filter Room was close by and consists of a cidery, restaurant, and also does take away fish and chips.  Just what we wanted.  We may have to go back next time and do a cider tasting, I think.  As we were waiting for our order to be cooked, Robin sat in front of a ...

Pain, Grief and Showing up Anyway from Where Art & Life Meet

So here’s the thing…  I feel a whole lot better when I show up even when I feel awful, even when I feel things are rough and I’m tired, even when I don’t want to.  I’ve also learned that showing up anyway is the single best remedy for not continuing to feel that way. Except […]

This Too Is Grief from Where Art & Life Meet

Stitch, put on the design wall, evaluate, consider, take down, add a new element, stitch, put back up on the design wall, take a photograph, consider, have an idea, take down, thread up a new color, take a chance, take a risk, take a breath, stitch and then the tears arrive.  Not a few drops […]
