Summer Moon QAL: August blocks from Carried Away Quilting

I’m back today with another set of blocks for the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. The August block assignment includes three pretty blocks: Twin Star, Split Nine Patch, and Birds in the Air.

I thoroughly enjoyed making the Twin Star block. Fabric selection for this block was a snap. Once I decided to fussy cut a pink flower from Lella Boutique’s Nest collection, all that was left was to select two complementary blush prints for the star points. To add visual interest, I used the pale gray text print from Corey Yoder’s Strawberry Jam ...

Summer Moon QAL: July blocks from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I’m popping in today to share my July blocks for the Summer Moon Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop. We’re only three months into the quilt along, so there is plenty of time for you to join! The July assignment included Bear's Track, Buzzard Roost and Crown of Thorns blocks.

For the Bear’s Track block, I pulled four robin’s egg blue prints from Lella Boutique’s Nest collection to make the paws, and anchored them with a little green center square. Isn’t that about the prettiest shade of blue you have ...

Next Up: a graduation quilt from Carried Away Quilting

I have a special quilt to share with you today, a gift for our niece Molly, who is graduating from high school. Molly is a sweet, smart, soft-spoken young lady who also has a great sense of humor. With her easy-going temperament and kind ways, I just know she will make a positive mark on the world.  It makes me happy to be sending a quilt along with her to college, to remind her how much she is loved.

When I asked Molly if there was a style or color combination she would like for her quilt, she wasn’t ...

Summer Moon: a sampler book by Carrie Nelson from Carried Away Quilting

Last week I received a lovely surprise in my mailbox. The kind folks at It’s Sew Emma/Fat Quarter Shop sent me a copy of Carrie Nelson’s new book, “Summer Moon,” which features a beautiful and unique sampler quilt. After spending some time looking at all of the pretty photos in the book, I zipped on over to my sewing room and made up one of the blocks, the Maple Star!

The sampler quilt is comprised of 24 blocks that are each made in three different sizes: 5”, 6 1/2” and 8” unfinished. The book includes setting ...

Weekend sewing and a "near squirrel moment" from Carried Away Quilting

I almost had a “squirrel moment” on Sunday.  If you read my last post, “Decorating for the holidays, quietly,” you’ll know what I mean. I almost got distracted by a shiny new nut in my possession. Instead, I made a quick cup of tea, assessed the situation, and found my quiet place. Whew! It was a close call.

I did have a really nice, low stress weekend.  On Friday evening, my husband and son headed out on the ice in front of our place for a little fishing. We have about 4-5 inches of solid ice on the lake ...

My Timeless Day: custom kits for Diamond Trail and Summer Breeze! from Carried Away Quilting

As a pattern designer, it is always a thrill to see my patterns sewn up by other quilters. It’s exciting to see one of my creations come to life with a different color palette, fabric style or theme. It’s also quite a thrill when quilt shop owners kit my patterns and offer a custom option to their customers.

One of my sponsor shops, My Timeless Day of Alcester, SD, has recently kitted two of my new patterns: Diamond Trail and Summer Breeze.  Shop owner Allison has a great eye for putting colors together, and I just love what ...

Counting my quilting blessings from Carried Away Quilting

Spring has finally sprung in Minnesota, and I'm so thankful for warm days, green grass, budding trees and singing birds! Maybe that's why I decided to add another piecing project to my list!  I've started working on a darling pattern called "Springville" by Thimble Blossoms, and I'm using a beautiful new fabric collection by Lella Boutique called "Nest." Here are a few of the blocks I stitched up:

I went out on a limb (pardon the seasonal pun), and selected a very soft yellow for my background fabric.  I'm hoping the final result will be ...

Free mini quilt pattern: He Is Risen from Carried Away Quilting

Happy first day of spring!  It’s snowing again in Minnesota, making me all the more eager for spring to truly arrive. To keep my spirits up, I thought I would share a pretty mini quilt I made last night. It’s called “He Is Risen,” and it’s a free pattern on my Craftsy Shop!

I introduced you to this Easter pattern two years ago.  My original quilt (pictured below) was made using Strawberry Fields Revisited by Fig Tree & Company for Moda.  I just loved the soft, nurturing pastels, and I gave this mini quilt to my mom.

I ...

Nesting - What's Old is New Again from A Quilting Jewel

Wow, I'm not sure I ever thought I'd finish this quilt. I made the top what seems like ages ago, but was really about 5-6 years ago. I used some very precious Tula Pink Nest fabric (3 charm squares) to make the top, which is a modified version of a Weeks Ringle/Bill Kerr pattern that I thought would be good to showcase the charm packs and the fabric without having to cut into them.

I ended up just quilting straight lines across the quilt about 1/2" to 3/4" apart. I didn't measure how far ...
