Friday check in: final finish, Annual Reckoning, a few goals, top-along, RSC from With Strings Attached

Happy New Year!

I managed to stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve.   I watched a new movie and an old one on Netflix.  New: Wake Up Dead Man, the third (and best, so far) in the Knives Out series.  Old:  How to Steal a Million with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. A fun caper from 1966.

As I watched I quilted and bound the golden bowties wall hanging.  (I left for Florida with it basted. I was afraid I'd make a mess of the quilting. But it turned out okay! I hand-sewed the binding to ...

Friday check in: sewn together from With Strings Attached

I took advantage of Wednesday's sunshine and warmer temperatures to take a short walk at Sand Pond (part of Illinois Beach State Park).  The front came through that night and Thursday was gloomy and rainy.  Today will be a return to the icebox.

At Thursday's Rotary breakfast we played games (two versions of "guess the carol") and had a gift exchange.  Chris got the pair of pillowcases that I made, along with a box of  candy (shhh...regift of one of the 'festive foods' from earlier in the month).  I got something I knew I wouldn't use ...

Midweek: slight progress + reading from With Strings Attached

On the domestic front:  every so often a puddle appeared in the basement bathroom (adjacent to the family room, AKA my studio).  The plumber checked the toilet and the seal/collar are good.  This week I saw the puddle again--and heard drip-drip-drip. Turns out it came from the dishwasher (right above the closet that is next to the basement bathroom).  The plumber popped the panel off the dishwasher and said the pipes are fine, the problem is the spray arm/drain assembly.  I called the appliance store (we are so fortunate to have a real appliance store in our town ...

Weekly update: holiday events, a cold snap, and a new start from With Strings Attached

The AAUW holiday luncheon was on Friday.

We long ago stopped having entertainment at the luncheon. We just enjoy the fellowship, food, and fundraising.  $508.50 from the silent auction and $200 from the quilt raffle go to AAUW Greatest Needs Fund.   $130 from 50/50 cash and $275 in outright donations go to our local scholarship for girls planning to major in a STEM field.

Judy P. won the quilt.  The raffle tickets were sold only at the luncheon this year. (In years past the quilt was displayed at the state fall conference but now that's on Zoom ...

Weekly update: signs of spring, quilting accomplishments + reading from With Strings Attached

I set all the clocks ahead just after dinner Saturday. I've finally figured out how to do the clocks in both cars correctly the first try.

Two beautiful days this weekend got us out for a walk at the state park and a nearby forest preserve.

The dogwood is really red.

This is my version of Transport, the Running Doe top-along pattern for March.

A closeup of the gray-with-dots background.

I made eight 9-patch blocks in yellow for the March Rainbow Scrap Challenge.   I have a pattern that will use eight 9ps in each color.

I made four yellow ...

Weekly update, part 2: wildflowers, challenge reveal, and neckties from With Strings Attached

Be sure to read the previous post about the Wisconsin Quilt Show.

I discovered bottle gentian last year at Spring Bluff Forest Preserve.  I have not seen it anywhere else.

The blossoms grow in tiers along the stem.

Bumblebees are the only pollinators strong enough to pry open the flowers.    A bumblebee happened along to do just that.

In the left photo you can see its rear poking out of the flower.

Fringed gentian are also in bloom now.  These are behind a dune at Illinois Beach State Park.   I'll have to go back to get a better close ...

Weekly update: HLC complete, stash report, and reading from With Strings Attached

Rabbit, rabbit!   Welcome to September.   I caught this cottontail bounding across the path at Lyons Woods last week.

Hike Lake County 2024 is a wrap!  They allow a wild card, meaning a 2-mile hike at any forest preserve not on the list.  On Friday afternoon we went to Van Patten Woods which is close to home. To change things up I went in the opposite direction from usual.

There were many monarchs and other butterflies flitting about.  One of them stayed still long enough for a photo.

Saturday morning we went to Ryerson.  It's 27 miles away and I ...

Midweek: too busy? another finish and OMG start from With Strings Attached

The 25 B blocks for Indigo Way are finished.

I put the A's and B's on the design wall.  I really like busy designs but my initial impression is that this is TOO busy.

The pattern calls for 20 half blocks for the setting triangles.  I've made four.

I've told myself firmly not to rush this -- let the blocks sit for a while.  An entire quilt of just A's and/or just B's would look pretty good.

Meanwhile,  here is the **fourth** finish for 2024.   I made the flimsy in December with leftovers from ...

Tote Bag from Quilt in Progress

I had seen photos online of tote bags people had made from fabric, using men’s ties for the handles. I decided to go a little further and use one of my late husband’s shirts for the body of the bag.

Decide the approximate dimensions of the tote bag. I cut the shirt so that the front pocket was included, but in the end it became decorative only. I may adjust the tutorial in the future so that it would be a functional pocket. I now had two pieces of fabric of the same measurements.

Keeping the button placket ...

Pandemic Porch Quilt Show Day 34 - 35: My Two Weirdest Quilts in Two Days from Gefilte Quilt

Day #34: Blooming Cactus
Choosing an eye-pleasing color palette did not come naturally to me, and here's the evidence. Let's breathe slowly as we approach this bed-size quilt, so as not to trigger sea-sickness.
It's slightly less terrible when you get very close,  thanks to the blue oasis.
Longtime quilters will recognize this pattern immediately, as a Blooming Nine Patch, from the bestselling 1996 quilt book 'Traditions with a Twist' by Blanche Young and Dalene Young Stone, still widely available (used) online - and sooooo worth it, just for this one pattern.

Sure, I knew that the orange ...
