Of Spring, Sewing, and Bats from caledonia quilter

WORLD NEWS:  Spring is in the air, AND in the ground.  I have snowdrops and crocuses blooming in the front flower bed.  And dandelions that have turned a lovely bright green, in time for St. Patrick's Day which is this coming Sunday.  Yesterday was sunny and 17c., perfect weather for walkies on the rail trail.  Today will be 18c. and maybe sunny (?).  That's VERY warm for this time of year.

GUILD NEWS:  I did a demo for the Binbrook guild on Improv Curved Piecing.  Working on these was quite fun.  Prep involved a few Youtube videos.  I swear ...

She's having what for lunch?? from caledonia quilter

This is a bowl of leftover green beans (DH does not like green beans) and pickled beets (DH also does not like pickled beets, the weirdo) and feta cheese.

This is what I have picked so far today:
That's 5 sweet peppers, 2 lovely tomatoes, a bunch of cherry tomatoes, 2 strawberries (now gone - they were my lunchtime appetizer), a container-thingy of purple beans (which turn green when you cook them), and 3 zucchinis.  I already have 9 zucchinis in the fridge and I gave away 3 yesterday.  I have to go back out again to pick the Roma ...

Two Modern Quilts & .... from caledonia quilter

These were two beauties that both wanted the pantograph Modern Curves.

That's such a striking quilting design and it shows up really well on solid fabrics.

And, HEY!  I MADE A QUILT!  This was for a young man who's gone off to university.

Here are the strips of geese.  My original intention was to use a border print as sashing between the rows, but I didn't like the look, so I opted to stick with the solid black.  These are 4" x 8" geese made using the Quilt In A Day ruler.  Definitely one of my favorite ...

A Day In The Life (or five weeks worth of days) from caledonia quilter

I'm reading Her Turn by Katherine Ashenburg.  It's a good book, and I noticed that each chapter represents a week.  Since I haven't posted in quite a while I thought I'd borrow that format.

Feb 6 - 12

I started the week by giving myself another covid haircut.  I was due for a proper cut at the beginning of January, but it's not like anyone cares what I look like.  37 years married...if you get my drift.  Most of the time DH is happy if he notices that my shoes are still in the closet ...

Marriage & An Anniversary from Where Art & Life Meet

Today is my 20th wedding anniversary to this guy. To say that I feel lucky doesn’t begin to tell the whole story. We met at a Christmas party on Christmas Day in 1998. Neither of us were expecting to meet the person that would completely change our lives, and yet, that’s exactly what happened. I… Continue reading Marriage & An Anniversary

A Commitment to Show Up from Where Art & Life Meet

I’ve been thinking about relationships a lot. Perhaps that’s because I’m coming up on my 20th wedding anniversary with this awesome man. Our relationship has seen its ups and downs, but we are committed to doing the hard work of showing up for each other no matter how painful and difficult that may be. As… Continue reading A Commitment to Show Up

Stack & Whack, putting the garden to bed, and a Galette w/recipe from caledonia quilter

Here are two same-but-different quilts.  The blocks are the same, but the quilts have different settings.
This one has no sashing, and plain alternate blocks.  A dark and a print border.

This has sashing with cornerstones and an outer print border.

OMG that is a beautiful print.
I chose an Asian-style pantograph to pair with the Japanese fabric.

 GARDEN REPORT

DH dug all the remaining potatoes.  We had a bumper crop this year, in spite of the dry summer.  Watering every week produced some great tomatoes and the wonderful pile of 'taters.

IF YOU LIKE CABBAGE:  I put in six ...

Catching Up, again from caledonia quilter

I seem to have put my blog posting on the same schedule as my house cleaning...pretty darned infrequently! My new system for cleaning is to keep an eye on a couple of the pictures hanging on the wall - if I notice gooey, stringy cobwebs hanging off them I make myself vacuum some time in the following week.

I'm just going to give you some pics of a few quilts that I've completed for customers over the last couple of months, ok?  OK.

This quilt came with a special request to add a couple of hearts in the ...

Stumbling Along & Other Musingsā€¦ from Where Art & Life Meet

Every morning my husband and I read something aloud, and then we take turns talking about what we’ve just read. Today’s reading began with this: “There is overwhelming evidence that the higher the level of self-esteem, the more likely one will treat others with respect, kindness, and generosity.” Nathaniel Branden I love our morning readings… Continue reading Stumbling Along & Other Musings…

Random Videos & Thoughts from Where Art & Life Meet

Have you seen this before? Amazing!! Another gem sent to me by my mother. All I kept thinking as I watched this was, “NOOOO! It’s too beautiful to cut into!” While at the same time fascinated and eagerly awaiting the next cake to see what was inside. Creativity knows no bounds. Then there’s this, which… Continue reading Random Videos & Thoughts

Following Instructions & Other Random Thoughts from Where Art & Life Meet

I’m not very good at following instructions. There. I said it. And here’s the kicker. Even when they’re my instructions, I still find it difficult. You see, there’s a playful, fun loving, always curious voice inside my head saying to me, “yeah, but wouldn’t it be more fun if we did it this other way?”… Continue reading Following Instructions & Other Random Thoughts

#StayAtHome aka When Will it End & Other Musings from Where Art & Life Meet

New Yorkers are a resourceful group for the most part, but we are also impatient, easily distracted, and busy. We are very, very busy. Don’t ask us what’s our hurry, you’ll be met with a bleary-eyed scowl of contempt. Don’t believe me? Ever walked down a street in mid-town Manhattan in the middle of the… Continue reading #StayAtHome aka When Will it End & Other Musings

Signed, Sealed and Delivered! from From the Strawberry Patch...

The year was 1970, it was a Saturday morning, I was a junior in high school. My mother answered the door to receive an Easter floral arrangement from her employer at the time. After she closed the door she called to me from the kitchen and asked me if I knew the boy delivering flowers for the local florist shop. I glanced out the living room window and saw him walking back down our walkway

Two Cute Kid's Quilts & Leisure Activities from caledonia quilter

Cute little cars, quilted with a panto.  This will make a great baby quilt for some little person.

Embroidered bears in an assortment of activities.

Given all the work that went into this beautiful embroidery, custom quilting was certainly warranted.

Leisure this month was an evening with my Red Hat girls.  After dinner out, we went to the museum for a MUMMY UNWRAPPING.  Honest to goodness.

Eeeuwww...

If you're like me, living in blissful ignorance, you may be surprised to learn that you can BUY mummies.  Yep.  Because, I mean, who wouldn't want one in their living room ...

The Cat Quilt and A Life Update from caledonia quilter

This was so much fun to work on.

The saving grace was that the maker brought a folder of quilting ideas along with the quilt.

There was a lot of negative space for me to play.

The quilting that replicates the brick floor was a technique I learned in a class with Jodi Robinson.  I've used that design more than I ever expected.

LIFE UPDATE
Things have been pretty hectic around here for the past 6 weeks.  Hubby was helping a friend and had an unfortunate accident that is limiting his activities and requiring physio appointments twice a week ...
