Periwinkle Quilt Top....DONE ! from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I spent a few days last week piecing together

all of the Periwinkle blocks...

Here is the top laying on the work table...

These are all hand cut pieces...

not paper pieced

With all of the bias cut edges,

this was challenging to line up

all of the pieces and make them fit...

I pawed through the fabric cupboards

and auditioned border fabrics...

I am going with the yellow inner border

and the Marcia Brady Flower Power outer border.

The yellow inner border is on...

It is ready for the outer border...

Here I am at the big board

pressing ...

Expanding My Temporary Design Wall from Podunk Pretties

Winter is in full swing out here in Podunk.  We've had lots of snow, below freezing temps and I have one doozy of a winter cold that has made me a bit lazy the last few days.  No problem, throw on a sweater, take little Tylenol, and break out the space heater and I'm ready to sew!

My Bow-Tie quilt will finish at 90x90.  The design wall isn't large enough to layout the entire quilt and even if it was big enough it's behind my sewing table. I plan to rearrange the studio soon to solve ...

Periwinkle Quilt...Progress from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I am making progress on the Periwinkle Quilt

102 Star Blocks pieced together...

Ready to trim the blocks to 6 inches...

This Bias Square ruler is my very favorite

for trimming up blocks...

I also use the revolving mat

to make the trimming go faster...

102 blocks all trimmed up and ready for

the design wall...

First two rows up on the wall...

8 rows up on the wall...

I have admired this quilt design for years

and it is finally a reality...

42 dark star blocks left...

I am placing the dark stars around the

outside as a border ...

Medallion Star Quilt...Progress from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Last week I managed to finish all

36 of the border blocks

Today I am putting all of the quilt blocks

up on the design wall together

for the very first time...

A few of the star blocks are up...

Here is the start of the center of the quilt...

The Star Medallion block is in place...

More small star blocks and

the center is almost filled in...

9 rows up on the design wall...

The quilt is too big for the wall

so the 10th and final row doesn't fit.

This is the pattern book I am working ...

Medallion Star Quilt....Border from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I am still pecking away at this quilt...

I forgot to take an updated photo,

but all 40 star blocks have been completed.

I am now assembling all of the

border blocks:

I do love assembly line stitching...

All of the little 4 patch blocks are done...

I am now assembling the 9 patch blocks

with the 4 patch blocks...

9 Patch Border Block...

The little light gray squares create a design

all around the edge of the quilt...

This image from the pattern shows

how the border blocks are arranged...

I need 36 nine patch border blocks...

20 inch Star Block...

I have been pecking away at this

the last few weeks on Wednesdays...

to the design wall...

Adding more star blocks each week...

Here are the last 9 stars to go up on

the design wall today...

Then I will be on to the final border treatment.

This is a Christmas gift, so there is nothing like

a deadline to get things done !

Medallion Star Quilt....Progress from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This has been my Wednesday project

for the last 5 weeks...

I meet with my local quilt group on Wednesdays.

We laugh and have a great time together

and sometimes I get some stitching done too !

By the second Wednesday,

I was making these strip units...

It took several Wednesdays to complete

all 20 of these units...

Today I began putting the top together

on the design wall:

The center medallion star is 20 inches square...

It is FUN watching it grow...

I do love an  "on point" setting...

Next up.....Star Blocks

This will be a queen size quilt ...

Drunkards Path...X Blocks from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Playing around with some

Improv X Blocks...

I am trying find a border treatment

that will compliment this

Drunkards Path quilt top...

So much color on the work table...

I have arranged the drunkards path blocks

in circles...

The X Blocks add straight lines

to offset all of those circles...

The more I make...

the better I like it.

I need more!

Fun on a Friday! from Humble Quilts

My design wall is pretty empty these days. The primitive Lone Cabin quilt is at the quilters and summertime isn't the most productive time in my sewing room.

But look at this amazing antique quilt block! I can see this being the center of a sweet medallion quilt.

This was my design wall before putting up that antique block- so stark and empty.

Alas! I'm pulling fabric for the yearly sewawlong! I'll add to these strips, red, green and a stripey brown! I'm hoping to get the top completed this weekend as we will be traveling ...

Quilting and Baling Hay... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I am creating a Comfort Quilt...

I pulled a bunch of large floral fabric scraps

that have been in the stash for 20 years or so...

I chose this gladiolus fabric for the center.

They measure about 8 inches tall...

There was enough of this pink zinnia fabric

for a border around the gladiolus...

Before I knew it, there are 3 borders on

and it measures 60 inches square.

I will put one last border on...

Out in the last hay field:

We are finishing things up...

I am raking and the Cowboy is baling...

The Cowboy is baling up ...

The Elk Wedding Quilt.... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

The last time I shared this quilt

it was in the design stage...

I completed all of the 9 patch blocks

and began piecing them into borders...

I completed the quilt top last month:

I had to re-cut the inner green border

to make the 9 patch border fit correctly...

Once the 9 patch borders were in place,

I added 2 more tree borders...

I have had this aspen trees

with blue background

fabric for years...

so happy to finally find a quilt for it.

The final border is also aspen trees

in the autumn with yellow leaves...

The quilt ...

Drunkards Path...Border from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

At this point, the blocks are all

pieced together into circles...

I do love the cirles...

I think the border treatment needs some

straight lines.

I started playing around with some

improv X blocks...

The X blocks are super FUN to make...

The X blocks play together well

with all of those circles...

In between trips to the hay fields,

I will come home and make a block or two

for the borders.

Drunkards Path Quilt Blocks... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

More than 15 years ago

I pieced a pile of Drunkards Path blocks

I pulled out my batik fabrics and had FUN

curved piecing...

I have to say, I have never been fond

of Drunkards Path quilts...

The layout and design of the

Drunkards Path puts me on edge...

so the blocks have been sitting in a drawer.

While I was searching for something else

in the Thread Shed I found the blocks...

I started playing around with them...

The full circle makes me happy !

Circles have always made me happy...

I like the way the circle really

jumps out ...

The Wedding Quilt... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We live along the Big Elk River...

When we rise in the morning,

we see the Elk through the fog,

grazing just outside the yard fence...

The Elk are calving right now and will

bring their calves into our hay fields in June...

Two winters ago an orphan elk calf took up

with our cow herd and ate hay right off

the hay truck when we fed each morning...

When you live in this little valley,

you learn to live with the elk...

Our neighbors are getting married in August...

They also live along the Big Elk River...

This Elk ...

Christmas Tree Quilt Top... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I have a request for a Christmas Quilt...

I found this image online...

I gathered up the fabrics...

It took 2 full days to get all of the cutting done...

When I began the piecing,

I numbered each row...

I also made a notation as to which way

the seam allowance was pressed on each row...

this will nest the seams together.

The first 4 rows are up on the design wall...

6 rows....the tree is coming to life...

8 rows...

10 rows...

12 rows...

15 rows...

The tree trunk and packages show up !

17 rows...

The quilt top ...

Migrating Geese....Table Runners from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I have decided to turn the Migrating Geese

panels into table runners...

I am auditioning border fabrics...

First panel with border fabrics...

Second panel with border fabrics...

First three table runners on the design wall...

I made nine migrating geese panels

to stitch borders on...

Eight table runners on the design wall...

I may use the Migrating Geese design in a quilt

someday. but for today these are table runners...

Now I need to find backings so I can get

these machine quilted.

Migrating Geese... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Today is the day...

I am teaching myself to piece

Migrating Geese

I am using this

Migrating Geese Technique Sheet

The technique sheet was easy to follow.

At this point the geese are

cut and pieced into units...

Here are a few geese ready to stitch into a row...

You alternate right side then left side

as you stitch the seams...

Four geese stitched together at this point.

I will add the yellow goose at the top

onto the right side...

You just keep adding geese until it is

the desired length.

Moose Quilt Top... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I completed all of the star blocks

on the Moose Panel...

At this point they are just stuck up

on the design wall around the moose...

I decided to use low volume fabrics

between the star blocks as a background...

The top border is stitched in place.

3 star borders are stitched in place...

The star borders are on...

This needs one final border...

A narrow lime border works best...

The Moose Quilt Top is complete...

Now to paw through the fabric cupboards

for backing fabrics.

Just below our house the Canada Geese

enjoy grazing along with our goat herd ...

Moose Quilt... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This moose panel is my first project

in the New Year...

This is my first audition of fabrics...

The bull moose is actually purple...

I chose a light purple inner border

and the moose likes it.

Just for kicks I put a light green

border around as well...

nothing is sewn down yet.

I whittled down the auditioned fabrics

to include the greens and purples...

I decided against the two background fabrics

I originally auditioned and went with

these low volume fabrics...

I thought I would keep the color story simple...

I stitched together an 8 inch Sawtooth Star...

I ...

Moose Quilt & Feeding Cattle... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I continue to work my way through

the pile of fabric panels

I have collected over the years...

Next up on the design wall is this

gorgeous bull moose...

I am auditioning fabrics...

I probably won't dig into this one

until the New Year.

A few of our mama cows...

They greet us each morning when we

come over the hill with

with the feed wagon...

The mama cows will begin calving in March 2024.

The Cowboy and I are celebrating
