Horse Quilt...Done ! from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

" Unbridled "

72 x 56 inches

The horse quilt is the same as the

pillows on the couches.

It's good to have it done and enjoy it

in the living room.

We had 5 newborn calves this morning...

They are all strong and healthy.

This is Althea Red

She is one of our oh so beautiful heifers.

She isn't showing any signs of calving just yet.

We check on the cattle several times a day to

see if any of the mamas are in labor yet.

Sometimes they need our help having their babies.

Horse Quilt... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

Remember this horse panel quilt top?

It has been sitting around long enough...

time to get it....under the needle !

It is a fair sized quilt, so I will quilt it

on my Big Girl Machine...

Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen

This is a Sit-Down Long Arm

and I love it for larger projects...

I used the Handi Quilter Wave Ruler

to quilt the center of the panel...

I used the Hand Quilter Ditch Ruler

for all of the straight line quilting...

To mark the spine of the feather,

I used my very favorite marking tool...

Ultimate Marking Pencil

Moose Quilt Top... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I completed all of the star blocks

on the Moose Panel...

At this point they are just stuck up

on the design wall around the moose...

I decided to use low volume fabrics

between the star blocks as a background...

The top border is stitched in place.

3 star borders are stitched in place...

The star borders are on...

This needs one final border...

A narrow lime border works best...

The Moose Quilt Top is complete...

Now to paw through the fabric cupboards

for backing fabrics.

Just below our house the Canada Geese

enjoy grazing along with our goat herd ...

Moose Quilt... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

This moose panel is my first project

in the New Year...

This is my first audition of fabrics...

The bull moose is actually purple...

I chose a light purple inner border

and the moose likes it.

Just for kicks I put a light green

border around as well...

nothing is sewn down yet.

I whittled down the auditioned fabrics

to include the greens and purples...

I decided against the two background fabrics

I originally auditioned and went with

these low volume fabrics...

I thought I would keep the color story simple...

I stitched together an 8 inch Sawtooth Star...

I ...

Moose Quilt & Feeding Cattle... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I continue to work my way through

the pile of fabric panels

I have collected over the years...

Next up on the design wall is this

gorgeous bull moose...

I am auditioning fabrics...

I probably won't dig into this one

until the New Year.

A few of our mama cows...

They greet us each morning when we

come over the hill with

with the feed wagon...

The mama cows will begin calving in March 2024.

The Cowboy and I are celebrating

our 40th Wedding Anniversary

on New Year's Eve !

Horse Quilt Top... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I took this off the design wall...

It is time to put this quilt top together...

I piled the quilt blocks and

flying geese units on a design board

so they can travel easily to the machine...

It took a bit of measuring and fudging

to get the quilt blocks to fit nicely

along the sides of the horse panel...

The flying geese units

were a bit of a chore to get them to fit

the quilt and keep all the points pointy...

I had to do lots of fudging on the seam allowances

to get the flying geese borders ...

Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

The machine quilting is complete,

it is time to get to the binding...

I use my trusty 20 inch square up ruler

to square up the corners...

It is so satisfying to trim off all

those rough edges...

The binding is pieced and pressed

and ready to stitch in place...

Stitching down the binding...

The binding and hanging sleeve are done...

When the label is sewn on the back

it is officialy done !

This Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep

was made especially to display in our living room

on a shelf I had built 30 years ago.

 My goal since ...

Horse Quilt....Borders from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I have always been fond of Flying Geese...

Such a simple quilt block that creates

such a big impact in our designs...

Flying Geese units add lots of movement

to this horse quilt panel...

they get along well with the

rest of the quilt blocks...

I am still in the design phase,

nothing is stitched in place just yet...

The color story is working...

I am stitching holiday gifts right now.

I will stitch them and

look at this on the design wall.

It will let me know what else it needs.

As for these two little cowgirls...

Horse Quilt Panel... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

All this year I have been working my way

through a stack of fabric panels...

This horse panel is on the design wall...

I bordered it with a rusty brown fabric...

This is the color story I pulled from the

fabric cupboard...

I created a test block to see how

the fabrics work together...

I made a few more...

I put a few blocks up on the design wall....

I will play around with placement

and see what works...

September in Cellars... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I have spent most of this year plowing

my way through a pile of fabric panels

I have acquired over the years...

I completed the design work on this autumn

panel in March and it is time to get it

quilted and hung in our living room...

The maple leaf blocks in the border

give this quilt so much movement...

The quilt is basted and on the

Sweet Sixteen

Sit-Down Long Arm

I began the quilting in the morning and

the quilt was done by 9pm...

Most of the quilting was accomplished with

these two long arm rulers...

The top ...

Horse Panel.....Top DONE ! from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I have auditioned final border fabrics

for this horse panel quilt...

I decided to go with a different brown fabric,

other than the brown I used for the background

in the quilt blocks...

Yesterday I cut and pieced this brown batik

around the the horse panel...

There are small light green and yellow dots

in this batik fabric and they go nicely

with the greens in the quilt blocks...

I am happy with the design of this quilt,

it has a strong visual impact.

Now I need to paw through the fabric

cupboard and find a backing fabric.

Glad I ...

Horse Panel....Progress from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I continue the design work on this

Horse Panel

The Rising Sun blocks on the bottom work

nicely with the mountain blocks on top but...

I feel like they are too small.

I cut out a 12 inch Rising Sun Block...

4 inches bigger than the first blocks

Here is the 12 inch block on the design wall...

Three of the 12 inch blocks fit nicely...

Yes, the larger, bolder blocks work...

Now you can see just how small those

first 8 inch Rising Sun blocks really are...

I chose a putty color fabric as an accent border

around the ...

Horse Panel....Border Blocks from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

The top border is complete...

I am contemplating the bottom border...

This has become my Go-To-Book

for Quilt Block designs...

I think the points in this Rising Sun block

will go well with the mountain blocks...

Here is the first block on the design board

ready to stitch together...

Two blocks on the design wall...

they are 8 inch blocks and seem small to me?

I do like the Rising Sun blocks...

They still seem under-sized to me...

I will live with them on the design wall

for a few days and see what transpires.

I continue to push on with my

Here is another favorite....Horses

Here are a few soft colors

pulled from the fabric cupboard...

I am auditioning border fabrics...

I decided to try out  the

Delectable Mountain Block...

I am only using half of the block...

Here is a Delectable Mountain border...

Wow....I am pleased !

Just outside the Thread Shed:

There is a RIOT of color !

Unbridled.....Horse Quilt from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I am still making my way through

a pile of fabric panels

I have purchased over the years...

This horse panel is called...Unbridled

As soon as I put this panel up on the design wall,

I just knew I wanted to include big stars

I could not find a pattern

so I made a star block of my own...

The star is paper pieced

then I cut it into a circle

and it is turned edge appliqued to the quilt top...

I like the way this is looking...

so I made more stars...

At this point a gold Stonehenge ...

High Desert Mule Deer...#2 from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

In May I created two of these

Mule Deer Panel Quilts...

I finished the first one and

gave it away as a gift...

I just finished the quilting on the second one...

I machine quilted it on my

Sweet Sixteen sit-down long arm...

I changed thread colors several times

to match the colors in the quilt...

It is so satisfying cutting off the rough edge,

stitching on the binding and hanging sleeve...

Here it is hanging in the living room.

Here are the first 3 blooms on the

Black Eyed Suzy plant....

The Day Lilies are blooming...

Remember the Mule Deer Panel...

I got it under the needle last week...

I quilted it in about 6 hours on my

Sweet Sixteen

Sit-Down Long Arm...

This is my Big Girl Machine

and she knows how to get things done !

Time to trim it up square...

I use the Omnigrip 20 inch Square

The binding strips are cut...

The Binding is stitched on...

The label is sewn on the back corner...

Cougar Quilt....Ta-Done ! from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I started designing this Cougar Panel

back in March...

I had FUN creating lots of different

sampler blocks as a border treatment...

The machine quilting is complete

and I am binding it today...

For machine bindings,  I clip ever inch

of the binding so it does not move

when I am stitching it in place...

I stitch in the ditch on the front side...

I included a hanging sleeve on the back,

so we can display it in our living room...

You can also see the back side of

the binding stitched down.

I just need to add a quilt ...

Mule Deer Quilt... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

We are in need of a quilt to comfort

a very dear friend...

We found this Mule Deer panel

and auditioned a few fabrics

from my cupboards in the Thread Shed...

I think this grouping should work nicely

and lots of texture !

I found a block to piece into borders

from this book...

Twin Star Quilt Block....12 inches

My work table is all set up and ready

for stitching, when I can sneak in here

and sew for a few minutes here and there...

First block cut out and on the

design board...

As time allowed...

I stitched a ...
