Final Preparations from Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. We're on whatever counts as the opposite of the home stretch. Home stretch usually means the time before reaching the end. How does one turn that around and make it a stretch toward the beginning? Just now I checked in with The Google. The Google tells me I can substitute "opening chapter." Okay, so opening chapter it is. We're not quite to the first page, though. Think of this as the dedication.

We've had to reroute our trip already. As it turns out, it's going to snow like mad at the Siskiyou ...

At Your Auntie’s from The Quilt Quine

When I was little if you were “At your Auntie’s / Granny’s House”, normal rules did not apply. My sister and her boys came to visit for their half-term hols and they were allowed to do pretty much what they liked;) Luckily, we had decent weather almost all week so we went for long walks with Nessie and had a trip to Aberdeen on the wet day. Other than that it was very relaxed with video games, crafts and snacks. The boys thought my cluttered house was great as it contains every known gadget, book and musical instrument yet ...

Once and Future Cooking from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. I have a few things to tell you, and then I'm back into spasmodic blogging at least until we get down the road some. We've been watching the weather very carefully. We had what we like to refer to as a "false spring" here in the Pacific Northwest. We had three lovely days of sunshine and warmth, but we're promised the return of cold and wet this week. It's still dry so far, but we could see more freezing temperatures before we leave. It makes it hard to prepare because we can ...

Hen Party from From My Carolina Home

I invited a couple of friends to come over for lunch this past week, so of course that meant setting a nice table. I piddled around with a lot of ideas, but nothing seemed quite right. It was way past Gal-entines day, too early for spring, pastels and flower baskets just didn’t seem right. I wanted to use my pretty Japanese bowls for the soup I planned to serve, but nothing went with them. I got out my bowls with the roosters on them, and decided to go with that color scheme. The red was just more appropriate for ...

Two Loaves of Sourdough from Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara

Yesterday I made two loaves (really, they’re boules but I just call them loaves) of sourdough. I’m impressed with my new starter. I had heard on a youtube that adding a few tablespoons of rye to the starter really makes it crazy active but Chad said he read that using rye can introduce harmful organisms....

Sunny and Dry from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. The warmer, drier weather we've been promised has finally arrived. We have a pretty view of the mountains this morning.

We were able to get out and pull some weeds yesterday, although the day started out pretty chilly. We waited until after lunch to get outside, and then we each picked a bucket full of weeds. It was a pretty good head start. The kitties helped, of course, but they were off busy with other things. There was no rain overnight, and we're not expecting rain before Sunday. Mike has identified some areas he ...

Garlic Sourdough Bread from Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara

A couple of weeks ago Chad and Nicole were here and Nicole asked for some of my sourdough starter. For the first time in years and years, I didn’t have a sourdough starter. I didn’t have any in the fridge, didn’t have any dried in the freezer . . I had none. I told her...

Time Flies from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends, and Happy President's Day. It's another wet morning here at the Three Cats Ranch. We've been promised some drier, warmer weather later in the week. I sure hope so. It would be good to get out and pull some weeds before we take off on our trip.

Yesterday morning, I spent quite some time trying to generate an image I could use for Project Quilting's fourth challenge: "Hourglass." We could go off in any direction with this, but we were required to use the hourglass shape in our quilt. I had an ...

Whole Grain Pasta from Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara

One of my favorite meals (I have so many!) is to cut up a roast, season it fairly heavily with the usual suspects – salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, Italian seasonings, cumin – whatever you might like but the meat is a small part of this dish so it needs a good bit of...

2024 In Pictures... from caledonia quilter

The apron I made for my egg-providing neighbour.  I know she appreciates these...I popped over there one day for a visit and she was wearing a tattered apron that I'd made her a couple years earlier.  Ever since then I make her a new one every couple years.

I'm lucky enough to have friends who I meet at Mapleview Mall for an irregular dinner date, maybe a half dozen times a year?  We met through our work at Royal Bank ...so many years ago I don't even want to think about it.  Somehow these new shoes ...

A Kitchen Day from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. We're nearly halfway through this short month. Do you have any plans for Valentine's Day yet? I know...it's a dumb "holiday," but it's a good excuse for an evening out. Mike and I have a date tonight. There's a special Valentine's menu at one of our favorite downtown restaurants, and we're going out tonight for an early celebration.

There was no sewing yesterday. My wrist wanted me to take the day off, and it was probably just as well. I don't think I've had a day ...

A Whimsical Finish from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. It felt like a busy day yesterday, although it doesn't seem as if I have much to show for it. I was bothered by my left wrist for much of the day. It sometimes happens when I've been quilting. A few days ago, I noticed it was bothering me. By the time I was ready to do any sewing, it was feeling better and I forgot all about it. Then, yesterday the pain came back with a vengeance, and I ended up immobilizing it around noon. It doesn't hurt unless I move it ...

Mardi Gras from From My Carolina Home

Tuesday is Mardi Gras, and this year I managed to remember it far enough in advance to change my header to Mardi Gras. I have some fun ideas for you today, for your home, and my plans for this year. Let’s start by setting a festive table. Pull out everything you can find around the house in purple, gold and green and mix them up to create a carnival table. This table for two from a couple of years ago could be for breakfast, as we have a Mardi Gras party to attend this year for dinner.

This party ...

Sweet Potatoes from Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara

Last year’s garden produced enough sweet potatoes to hopefully get us through until this year’s crop is ready. We’ve eaten so many sweet potatoes and still have probably four months before the new ones will be ready. But, we’re officially out of purple sweet potatoes and only have a few white sweet potatoes left. The...

Triumphing over Tech (in the end) from The Quilt Quine

I spent a lot of my week testing out the Tech that I needed to use to do my Zoom lecture and demo for the Scottish branch of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles. I was using the MacBook Air that I got from Music Magpie and a usbc hub since the MacAir hardly has any ports where you can plug in gadgets. It turns out that there is more than one version of a basic usb port! I wanted to use 2 Camlinks in order to livestream images from my 2 GoPro cameras but they needed a faster ...
