Early Start from Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Our chat is starting a little late this morning. We crated up the kitties this morning and took them to the vet to obtain their Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. As you might guess, they whined and howled all the way to the clinic. The paperwork took about half an hour, and so we loaded them back into the car and headed to McDonald's for our beloved Egg McMuffins. We went through the drive-through window and ate them in the car. In all of that, we heard not a peep from the kitties, and they were ...

Final Full Week from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Things are about to get real here at the Three Cats Ranch. Real busy, that is. We'll be at home today, but the week starts off with a bang tomorrow when we take both kitties to the vet to collect their CVI (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection). Think of it as the kitty passport they'll need to enter Alaska. And, honestly, they are natural-born American catizens, so they are very put out at this extra hoop they must jump through. And if you don't know it already, kitties are not fond of doing tricks ...

Sewing and Baking from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Well, I said I was going to get into trip preparation in earnest, and it started yesterday. Somehow a switch got flipped in my brain, and I convinced myself it was time to put thinking into action.

My first stop was to use some things that have been hanging out in my freezer. I baked some cookies. These will be for taking along in the truck. We often eat something like a protein cookie or a Clif bar when we don't want to make a stop for lunch. These cookies are made with nuts, dried ...

A Little Finish from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Well, the rubber is about to hit the road here, both literally and figuratively. Time grows short. I had a moment of panic last night thinking about all I need to do between now and the day we leave on our trip. Then, as I've told a few of you, I talked myself back from the ledge by reminding myself that the truck can't leave without us. And, if I'm thinking straight, I know I have plenty of time. But the time is now. I need to get moving.

Just before coming upstairs ...

Happy Mother's Day! from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends, and Happy Mother's Day to all who celebrate. We've had our morning pancakes already, and there are leftovers for dinner. I'm going to enjoy the rest of my day, "rest" being the operative word in that sentence.

It was a very nice day yesterday. We had dinner with Erik and Mae to celebrate birthdays and mother's day. It was an enjoyable evening. I snapped this picture of a Bristly Locust tree growing in front of their house.

It was covered in those purple flowers, and there were two more around the corner ...

Some Stitching and Gardening from The Quilt Quine

It is funny how a week with a Bank Holiday can seem longer than normal. I could not stop thinking about a solar candle lantern that I had seen in Aldi at Bodmin but left behind so I drove to another store in Plymouth to get one. I love how it flickers at dusk on my back doorstep.

I had to deal with several cabbages and a pile of runner beans that I got in a veg box so I blanched and froze them. I just have to remember to eat them;)

Since I am renting my cottage, I don ...

Fresh Milled Flour Dutch Baby from Patchwork Times by Judy Laquidara

It was back around 2007 when I first started milling our flour. For a while, I knew it was more healthy and better for us but I loved white bread and during the years, there would be times when I was making 100% fresh milled flour bread for a few weeks, but then I’d go...

Some Progress from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Another week comes to a close. There's still time left for sewing before we head north. From past experience, I know the next couple of weeks are going to fly by. We're each checking off our respective pre-trip activities. Mike spent quite a bit of time with our alarm system and smoke alarms yesterday. He was making sure everything worked and putting in fresh batteries. In the process, he discovered the smoke detector in our bedroom was no longer functional. No problem. He ordered another from Amazon, and it was delivered within about two ...

'Til Next Year from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. The spring birthday season is over. There will be no more birthdays in our family until Erik's October birthday. There will be a lot of miles traveled between now and then, both literally and figuratively. For now, I'll just say we've survived another trip around the sun. Hopefully, I'll still be able to say that again next year.

It was a busy kitchen day yesterday. I started by steeling myself with slow-stitching. I finished up the "Buttons" block...

and then I started on the third and last embroidered block for this project ...

Between Birthdays from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. We awakened to bright red skies this morning.

Here's a shot standing in a little different location. Rain's gotta be on the way, doncha think?

And today is Mike's birthday, which means yesterday was a day between birthdays. We've already had our traditional breakfast of Eggs Benedict this morning. He gets it on his birthday and on Father's Day.

And this birthday business...oh my. One day you're teenagers meeting for the first time on the day he graduates high school. Then, you barely turn around and you're both ...

More cooking—a new-to-me recipe from A Prim and (not so) Proper Quilter

This was so good I had to share.

I know when the Hubs retires at the end of this month, he will take over the primary cooking duties—yay! That means more time for quilting! But I’m still it for the next 27 days, and I tried a new recipe Thursday night. It’s a lot of prep work—in fact, the prepping takes longer than the cooking. That will typically turn me off from trying the recipe, but let me tell you my thought process on this.

Over 30 years ago and before I became a federal government ...

A Beary Small Start from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. Before I sat down here, I needed to top off my coffee cup. I have a lot to tell you today. It's going to require a full cup. Since yesterday was the reveal of my Tula-Tu quilt, I'm a day behind on the usual goings-on here at the Three Cats Ranch. By all means, everything that happens every minute of every day must be fully documented. I'm sure you understand.

First, thank you to the many of you who left such kind comments about Tula-Tu. If you missed her, you can read the ...
