Green Hearts: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Green patchwork colours at Clever Chameleon

Green for Solidarity and Caring

Several days ago I found out about the Healing Hearts for Christchurch initiative. It is a drive to make and distribute quilts to the people most affected by the recent terror attack in Christchurch.

I decided that I would like to support this group of caring quilters on their quest to show love, respect, acceptance, and support to those affected within the Muslim community. They are also reaching out to the first responders, emergency services personal and ongoing support workers of Christchurch. So today, my friend Susan and I started turning our green fabric scraps ...

Vintage Cat: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

I don’t think it’s any secret that I am a cat person. Perhaps not as passionate about them as when I was a child, but I still love having a friendly cat around the house to admire my quilting and to test my quilts.

cat on quilt

This week though, cat art seemed to specifically catch my attention all over the place.

It started with a picture of a mummified cat I saw on Kathryn Kerr’s site for her ...

Sew Succulent: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Sew Succulent colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Sometimes you just have to get started. Then the ideas will finally come….

This week I have been working on my crazy diamond quilt idea from my previous post. I started this quilt with very little idea where I was headed…. A bit scary!……. But to put it off much longer would have been inviting worse disaster. Like, no quilt at all….

No captivating ideas had been forthcoming to me for the March Island Batik Ambassador challenge until now, and it certainly wasn’t for lack of pondering. All I had to show for about a month of ruminating was ...

Colour & Inspiration Tuesday: Stops and Starts from Clever Chameleon

Stops and Starts fabric colours by Clever Chameleon

Today’s Inspiration: Rare New Fabrics

In what was an unusual experience for me, I bought new fabric last week. For myself. With my own money. Yup.

Not needing to buy much fabric is both the upside and downside of being a fabric brand ambassador/inefficient sewer combo. Because it means I also don’t get to choose much fabric. So, I felt seriously out of practice walking into my local fabric warehouse with no idea what I really wanted and no third-party constraints on my decisions (except quantity, ha!). What is this odd feeling, called “too many choices”?

Koala Kapers: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Koala Kapers, an appliqué colour board from the Clever Chameleon

What are you up to this week?

I have been doing mostly secret sewing….. lots of fun stuff for Island Batik and a little for a New Zealander designer too, but not much I can show right now.

Love with a twist button

Luckily there is one thing that is 100% mine to show though. I have been working on the first balloon animal appliqué for March. I will say, I have fallen in love with this next block of Love with a Twist…. a Kuddly Koala!

Of course we can take a peek at what others have been working on recently too. There were ...

Pigs Might Fly! Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Talk to the Pig mini quilt by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon Quilting

Show Your Wings Blog Hop

When Carol from Just Let Me Quilt announced there was a new blog hop coming up in February, I did my usual mental dance with myself. Mature Me said “Nope, you’ve got too many more urgent important things on your plate”. Optimist Me said “But I’ll just do something little…. I’ll squeeze it in”. Mature Me said “Pigs might fly!”. And Stick It to Mature Me Me said “Oooooh….. pigs might fly – that’d fit the theme! Hahahahaha”.

The thought of doing a Pigs Might Fly appliqué motif based on my balloon ...

Dancing a Jig to a little Ditty: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Ditty fabrics from Island Batik colour scheme at Clever Chameleon

Introducing Ditty

Ditty is the name of one of Island Batik’s latest fabric releases. The colours are as cute as their name… Kind of a pastelly sunset. Actually, I don’t easily recognise them as pastels but I guess that is what they really are, since they are nowhere near colour-saturated. Is there such things as bright pastels? If there wasn’t, there is now.

I received 10″ precut squares of Ditty and two pieces of yardage from the collection in my Island Batik Ambassador allowance. I hope you have been following along and already know what I am ...

Those Crazy Aussies: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Jacana colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oi, Oi, Oi!

This past weekend was our national holiday long weekend, with Australia Day on Saturday (the 26th and a Monday public holiday). So it only seems fitting to have a look at a few things uniquely Australian today.

Koala tangram appliqué at Clever Chameleon

The bird in our colour board today is a jacana. Like all Australian animals it is a little on the unique side, verging on eccentric. A bit like the critters on my Wild Things quilt. And it occurs to me, I never did get around to posting photoshoot pictures of my finished Wild Things Australian Tangram quilt ...

Gingerbread Inspiration: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Gingerbread Snow globe cupcake colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

Sometimes it’s not about the colours….. (*shock*, I know!). Sometimes, an idea is so awesome, it would grab me in any colour. Today’s inspiration photo from rawpixel on has me reeling with possibilities in both the kitchen and in the sewing room! All I did was type “gingerbread” into the search bar of Unsplash, and my world changed forever!

OK, so it’s probably not really quite that drastic, but there is definitely some fun to be had here!

Paisley Park – Colour and Inspiration Tuesday from Clever Chameleon

Paisley Park color scheme by Clever Chameleon

Are you ready for a trip to Paisley Park?

“Got your hat? Where’s your water bottle? Have you put sunscreen on?”…. Those are the questions of the day here….. 41C (105.8F) and UV index 13! Or perhaps where you are, a trip to the park requires a different sort of hat…. and a coat and scarf and boots….

If Paisley Park was a place, I reckon it would look like this…..

Depending on your perspective, Paisley Park may be either a cool relief from the summer heat or a bright spot in a cold day. Thankfully a trip ...

Peacock Parade: Colour & Inspiration Tuesday and Linky Party from Clever Chameleon

Peacock Parade colour scheme from Clever Chameleon

Colour Inspiration Tuesday is back! There are New Fabrics in town! And there are Prizes to win!

Welcome to back to our Colour & Inspiration Tuesday routine with my most favourite inspiration of all! New batik fabrics!

It’s that time of year when the newest fabrics fluff up their feathers and put on their most extravagant of courting performances, targeting your hearts and your wallets for a new nest to live in. Fair warning – there are a lot of new pretties out there, and their covet-factor is sky high. Allow these hard-to-cut-into fabrics to come to roost at your place ...

The Scoop: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

Wombat Scoop colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

The Scoop on The World’s Strangest Poop!

My daughter wants me to sew appliqué poop onto my latest quilt.

Yup. You just read that. And it’s totally true. My 10 year old daughter is on a mission to have scat immortalised on the quilt I am making for her younger brother. And what is possibly even more astonishing – my 8 year old son has declined the offer.

In my daughter’s defense, it is an animal quilt. And the poop she wants on the quilt is very specific. Wombat scat! And she has a pretty good reason……

Tiger colour scheme from Clever Chameleon

December at Island Batik is Whimsical and Wonky….. and Wild!

The challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors for this month is Whimsical and Wonky. Well, that pretty much sums up all my quilts…. so would you believe I had the hardest time settling on an idea for this challenge? The hardest time!

But I now have a plan I’m happy with. And I’ve started! I think it should be fun. </p>

Tired Teddy Labyrinth: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

Tired Teddy Rainbow colour scheme from Clever Chameleon

Better late than never, right? It’s a few days overdue, but my November Island Batik challenge quilt is finished.

rainbow Clever Chameleon logo

The Chameleon is Back. In full Colour!

It is really nice to be presenting a rainbow quilt today – after two fun but black and white posts. I do truly love the drama of a good black and white quilt or the cuteness of a panda appliqué. But black and white is not my natural go to for a finished quilt, whereas the Island Batik Paisley Dots batik collection is totally within my comfort zone.

What’s not to love about ...

It’s Black and White: no-Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

black and white parrot color scheme by Clever Chameleon

Have you noticed how an absence of colour can bring out the drama and depth in a picture or design?

And emphasise all the details? I am one of the biggest colour lovers out there, but I also recognise that colour can sometimes be a distraction from the other features of a fantastic design.

Seeing something in black and white really helps to distil the important elements out of a picture, don’t you think? What is it about the subject that makes its form distinctive and recognisable? Where are the contrasts and shadows that give the subject that “wow ...

Tired Teddy Quilt Top: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

Tired Teddy colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

This Kwiltin’ Koala had a big week and an even bigger weekend!

I know just how she feels! Last week I had the excitement and privilege of submitting my first finished magazine quilt pattern. I can’t wait til it gets to press and I can tell you more. Woo hoo! And then I had a weekend of two Scouting activities with the kids and my brother’s 40th birthday party! So this fuzzy cutey is not the only Australian on the hunt for a comfy place to nap today.

Having said that….. I still managed to finish my log ...

Lily Pad Leap: Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Linky Party from Clever Chameleon

Lilypad leap

I have a pesky quilt squirrel idea stuck in my head!

That’s probably not a big surprise to you, I know. But it is a persistent little vermin of an idea that keeps reoccurring like heartburn and I don’t have time right now to explore it. Instead, I keep allocating it a dodgy neuron in a bad neighbourhood of my brain in the hope that it will get forgotten.  But to no avail.

Do you ever get creative ideas that just won’t go away?

Pick a Pumpkin Colour Inspiration Tuesday and Link Party from Clever Chameleon

Pumpkin colour scheme by Clever Chameleon

The Pick A Pumpkin blog hop is here!

Carla from Creatin’ in the Sticks has organised you yet another fantastic blog hop. This time around the theme is pumpkins…. big pumpkins, small pumpkins, friendly pumpkins, mean ones….. Ok, so she didn’t really give explicit permission to quilt nasty pumpkins, but she did say any quilt, any size – so long as it has a pumpkin on it somewhere.

Pumpkin Stack color scheme from Clever Chameleon

I really like pumpkins for decorative purposes – so many colours, shapes and textures! Like many Northern Hemisphere seasonal traditions, this is not really a thing we do well in Australia. But I ...
