Chain links from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and happy weekend! I hope you all had a lovely week. I was mostly inside, because it is hot and rainy, but I did get a lot of things done. After almost two years, the house is finally starting to feel like home. Once I get the hallway done, I think I'll be finished with home improvements for a while. Until I get sick of something else and absolutely have to change it or paint it, that is.

Since I wanted desperately to stay in the air conditioning, I made some progress on the Color Chain quilt ...

Positive progress from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! Yes, it's a very rare Sunday post! I'm usually busy doing family stuff-- or scrubbing something-- on the weekends, but I took some pictures of the progress I've made on my Positivity quilts to share today, so that's what I'm doing. Always good to have a plan, isn't it?

You probably know by now that my friend Preeti of Sew Preeti Quilts is running the Positivity Quilt Along to benefit Mercyful Quilts, which is overseen by my friend Bernie.  How could I not jump in and support some friends and contribute to ...

A second dose of positivity from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How is your week going? I am happy to tell you that the noise from the cicadas is fading. It's fading because they're all done with their life cycle and are now dying in droves. The front walk looks like the site of a massacre. We keep using the leaf blower to clear it because the crunchiness when you go out to the mailbox is really disconcerting, and using a broom is just icky.

Other than that. . .well, I started another quilt, and it turned out to be another positivity quilt for Preeti's quilt along ...

Sunshine in the rain from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! I don't know about you, but we have started to get out and about some more, but not quite normal yet, and this week we traveled to our nephew's high school graduation. They held it in person! In a cicada-free area of the country, too. It was a bit like a family reunion, and most of us spent some time sobbing over lost time. It was so great to see my sister and niece and nephew, and my parents were there, and some siblings, too. And J. got safely graduated and is off to college soon ...

Color chains from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! The wind is about to blow me off my chair today. How about you? Holy cow, the wind is really strong out there. On the upside, the temperature got over 80 degrees one day this week, but then it fell back to a more normal temperature. I can feel the summer coming on already, can't you?

Today I am showing off my new RSC project. I know what you're thinking-- do you really *need* a new project, Mari? Well, yes, yes I do! I have sooo many scraps. Sometimes they make me tense because they seem ...

Still behind, but catching up from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone, and happy weekend! It seems to me that these weekends are coming closer together than they used to, though this was a long week. I think that means that we're heading towards summer. Seems like it has been a long time coming, doesn't it?

In my few spare moments this week (ha, ha!) I finally started getting caught up on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for this year. I have done very little for it since January, when the color was pink. I know, you thought I gave up! I had my doubts, too, but I ...

Some of this and some of that from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How are you all doing today? I am happy to say that this past weekend was one of the best weekends ever, as we got to go to visit our Wisconsin grandchildren for the first time in 15 months, and to meet our smallest granddaughter for the first time ever. I'm happy to say that Giggles is just the happiest child, and is so cheerful that it's contagious. It was glorious, and so long awaited. I think my heart grew several sizes. Also, restaurants are now called "the french fry store," which is what the 3-year-old ...

Grassy Creek [AKA October Picnic] is Complete! from TheEclecticAbuela

Every year, I enjoy creating a version of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. This year, her quilt was called Grassy Creek.

Grassy Creek [AKA October Picnic]  (98" x 98")

I used Bonnie's colors of red, orange, gold, and grey; however, I substituted blue for her green. I call this October Picnic because this was my color inspiration photo and the palette I created.

The quilt went together well, thanks to Bonnie's excellent writing of instructions. You can see some of the steps I took by clicking on the "Grassy Creek" label on the right pane of this blog ...

Grassy Creek--Part 2 from TheEclecticAbuela

The second clue of the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, Grassy Creek, came out this week.

Grassy Creek--Clue 2

These are just a few of the units. I'm substituting blue for the green Bonnie used. The blue fabric is a tie-dye type, so I'm getting a bit of color variation in the units. I like that--it adds interest. Below is the photo I'm using for color inspiration:

More to come.

Crochet Giant Granny Square Throw Progress from Quilting Stories

Crochet Giant Granny Square

At the begining of this new lockdown I started searching my stash of yarns with the aim of creating a new multicolor giant granny square blanket.

I picked up all the colored yarns I found for needles or crochet number 4, keeping the brown, grey and beige for another project.

Here I used the brand Fonty quality Ambiance 100 % superwash Woll superfine SW.

This is a very simple and pleasant project. It is never boring as you change colors. I love playing with varigated colors when I work on a project, that is quilting or knitting.

Works in progress from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How are you all doing? Yesterday, while I was trying valiantly to teach a class to students who are seriously exhausted, several dump trucks came and dumped fill dirt outside the almost-finished garage. I was annoyed as all get out and happy as a clam at the same time. It was loud and disturbing, but it means that my garage only has one more step to go. So I guess my current mood would best be  described as annoyed-happy. Or maybe happily annoyed?

Today I just have a couple of updates on things I'm working on, a ...

"The Retreat" ~~ Finished!! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Way back in July of 2019, I attended a quilt retreat in Baton Rouge with other members of the BRMQG. After I got home, I finished up the top and added it to the bin. A couple of weeks ago I dug through the bin and chose this top to quilt.

A little blue thread, feathers in the border, and some improv quilting.

I don't know what I did unless I really look at the individual motifs. In other words, I just had fun.

The back of the quilt is this solid blue linen and, because it was too ...

A festive trio of blocks from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! Here we are at yet another week in 2020. I can't believe this year isn't over yet, and at the same time, September is racing by. Our temperatures dropped into the 40s overnight the last couple of nights, and the hubs finally broke down and let me turn on the heat. Hard to imagine, but true!

I am trying to finish a big writing project right now, with a deadline of September 30, so while there has been stitching, there has not been blog writing. Life is like that sometimes. Today I just have three more ...

Galaxy full of stars from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! How are you all doing? I've been okay, spending a lot more time than I want to on the computer, and not for fun stuff, either. But no one wants to hear about that, especially me! I did have a couple of fun things happen this past week-- they poured concrete for my new garage at last. Yahoo! How sad is it that I'm counting that as "fun?" Those of you who have had construction know what I mean. The contractors said two more weeks. Then it rained like crazy, so who knows what happens now ...

a blue row from Making A Lather

This is the last blue Saturday for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am not really done with my projects, yet. Good thing, I still have time. I wonder what color I will be using next week...

I had the chance to make another blue row for the rainbow row x row I am making.
I prefer to cut my pieces oversized and trim. That way I can use a standard size cut.

I  have 6 rows ready out of 13.

I have started with the blues for putting words together for last year's rainbow quote quilt. I have a ...

My world is blue from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and happy weekend! I hope you have had a good week. I have discovered this week that the ragweed has started blooming around here, which seems a bit early, but it is definitely blooming nonetheless. How do I know? Well, I could tell you about the massive headaches and swollen eyes, but that would just be a downer, so let's just say that I can feel it. And we're not quite to August yet, which means that I had better stock up on allergy meds. I do not think the first freeze is coming to kill ...

fun blue blocks from Making A Lather

I have fun tiny houses

and wonky stars

The color for July and the rainbow scrap challenge is dark blue. I have plenty of scraps in those colors. I find that the triangles I cut, from the flip corners on the roof of the houses, work well for the wonky stars.
I am also working on Jamestown landing this month since it is all blue. I have half of it put together. And, I have all the rows made.

a bit of blue from Making A Lather

I have enough blue scraps that I could probably use it every month, and, not see the bottom of the barrel. So, I don't mind that we are doing blue again this year for the rainbow scrap challenge. I made these country roads blocks with whatever my hand picked from the 1 1/2 inch bin as long as it was blue.

One of my one monthly goals for July is to join my Jamestown landing blocks into a top. I am using them as a leader/ ender as I work on other blue rainbow projects.

I have three ...

Mixed blues from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and happy Saturday!  I hope you're all doing well. Is is just absolutely sweltering near you? It is so incredibly warm here right now, and humid as all get out, and it looks like we're about to have . . .a tropical storm? What? Yeah, I don't know either. I just know it's slowing down my renovations yet again.

Today I just have a very short post to show this little bit of progress for the rainbow scrap challenge this year. This month's color is dark blue, and here's my progress so far:

A ...

Still unpacking from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! I feel like I have to ask how everyone is doing every time I speak to someone now, so-- how are you all doing? I am feeling better than I have since March. Not only have I been out a few times and seen some lovely friends and picked out my own produce for once, but all this time I've also been teaching a summer class, which is now done. Done! I turned in the grades today and I am so remarkably happy.  It's been a long haul, and now I get a (somewhat shorter) summer ...
