Keeping Calm and Carrying On from Cat Patches

The past couple of weeks have been stressful. There's certainly enough in newspaper headlines to scare anyone. Add in a fire near one's home with an evacuation of several days' length, and you have a level of stress that requires a little recovery time. It was an exhausting effort to stay positive while we were evacuated. After yesterday's grocery shopping trip...pretty easy as those things go...my energy was tapped out, and I took a good long nap. By 2:00, grocery shopping was the only thing accomplished for the day. Eventually, I decided some slow-stitching ...

First Day of Fall Finishes from ... Cat Patches

Awesome alliteration. Good morning, my friends!

There was a lot of excitement at the Three Cats Ranch yesterday.

Smitty, I think Mom has a finished quilt for us to inspect!

Oh, yawn, Sadie. There's no honor in quilt inspection these days. Humans are staying inside all the time, and so quilts are finished every day.

Well, I don't care what you say, Smitty. I like this quilt, and I'm keeping it.

Okay, Sadie...well, what's so great about this quilt?

Well, Smitty, these are "bag ladies." And what kinds of "bags" do you think they're ...

Corny from ... Cat Patches

Blue skies! We can breathe again! (Breathing is a very important ingredient to a happy life.)

The kitties are enjoying life at home again too. They were out for us while we did our outside chores. Sadie thought she saw something off in the trees.

Smitty! There's a mouse over there. I heard it scurrying through the leaves. Just follow my pointer nose, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

It was the wind, Sadie. You're going to have to learn to listen for their itty bitty feet steps. There is nothing there.

Are you sure ...

Nearly Normal from Cat Patches

It's been one heck of a week, but we're getting back to normal slowly but surely. We've heard of no more flare-ups of the fire, and so we were confident enough to move the RV back into its usual spot yesterday. We really needed to get it out of the way of the garage. It's still about halfway packed, but that will change today. Hopefully, we'll feel put back together by tomorrow, and rain is still forecast to start then. It's a little weird wishing and hoping for rain, here in the Pacific Northwest ...

Improvement from Cat Patches

Well, things are looking up here at the Traveling Three Cats Ranch. The latest report from the firefighters noted that the fire was 75% contained. When I checked the page listing power outages last night, I was surprised to find our outage was no longer listed. Hm. Then about five minutes later, an email arrived from one of our closest neighbors noting they had power. This morning, another neighbor reported the same thing. So, that was very encouraging news. We won't know about our house until we check for ourselves, but I would be surprised if our power is ...

Cat Calamity from ... Cat Patches

Well, I hardly know where to start on today's post. So much has happened, it's hard to know whether to start with the good news or the bad news. But since some of you have expressed your concern about Sadie's ears, I guess I'll start there and put an end to the wondering.

Now here's something: if you're wondering how two people catch a tiny, but very strong, little tortie and load her into a cat carrier, I offer up this image as a warning:

What you see there is the salt and pepper ...

Produce Production from Cat Patches

The day didn't go exactly as planned yesterday, but it was so nice to take another day off from canning. As I mentioned, Mike and I made a trip into town. We first stopped off at Working Hands Farm to pick up 40 pounds of tomatoes. They grow the most beautiful tomatoes. Here's one box of 20 pounds. And there's another just like it.

Also, I've harvested about two dozen from our own plants. Our own plants are producing fast and furious now.

The tomatoes are going to get turned into pasta sauce and salsa, and ...

A Dozen Chickens from Cat Patches

Yesterday's grocery shopping trip was quick. Our list was short, and we were home by around 10:15 a.m., which left me lots of time to finish up my quilting for the day. I even did some housework. (Polishes fingernails on shirt.) Time was short because Mike and I still needed to drive into downtown Portland.

So, I finished up the last of the chicken blocks. Yesterday's addition to the buffet:

Fried Chicken. This one took forever. I was about one-quarter of the way through it when I realized the quilt corner was folded under, and I ...

Hot Harvest from ... Cat Patches

We had very warm weather yesterday. Toward the end of the afternoon, the temperature outside was 98°F., which is very hot for our hill. I can only imagine how people in the valley were suffering. We're expecting more hot weather today, but this morning's sunrise was beautiful. I can't recall seeing raking light from the clouds like this before.

While I was out, I walked all the way around the house, passing by Smitty along the way. He loves the warm weather and spends most of his time out on the catio.

Also, I passed by ...

Finally Finished on all Fronts from Cat Patches

It was a day for finishing things up. As everyone knows though, nothing is ever really finished. One thing finishes, and another opportunity presents itself. I spent the day on just two things. First, I finished with the last of the cherries. Since beginning, I've picked, pitted, and processed 30 pounds of cherries. I wasn't counting on my neighbor coming through with the pie cherries, and so I ended up processing 10 more pounds than I thought I would in the beginning. When she offered up her cherries, my first thought was to say no. Ours were ready ...
