Relaxing and Sewing from ... Cat Patches

It's been a busy couple of days. Yesterday, I had just a few easy chores to do, but then I spent most of the day sewing...either by machine or by hand. The machine sewing was spent finishing off the top-stitching and machine embroidery for New Mexico Kitchen.

It wasn't finished yet though. Next, I needed to do some hand embroidery. I added some vegetables to the stew, divots in the potato skin, holes for the salt shaker, and a name for the bottle of chile powder. I was going by the pattern spelling, but I think "chile ...

Moving Slow from ... Cat Patches

There was no time for sewing on Saturday since we spent the day unpacking and cleaning up the RV. Since unpacking always has me dragging my feet, not much was accomplished that day. And that left Sunday for a lazy day fest. We got some things done, but mostly, we sat around looking at our iPads, catching up on things we'd missed during our unplugged days.

Of course, no day is complete without a good slow-stitching session. I'm about one-third of the way across this first section of Calendula Patterdrip's Cottage.

There was some housework to do ...

Saturday Sewing from Cat Patches

It was an easy-going day yesterday. I'm still taking it slow since my Mohs procedure, although it's healing well. The pain has nearly gone away completely, and the swelling is likewise nearly gone. I had sincere thoughts about getting some housework done, but then decided to rearrange the calendar so I could avoid it until after we get back from our camping trip. We're not expecting visitors...ever. So, what the heck? After lunch, I took a long nap. The stress of the past couple of weeks has left me exhausted, it seems, no matter how much ...

Oh, Happy Day! from Cat Patches

When my furry alarm clock went off this morning, I jumped out of bed, lighter on my feet than I've been in about four years. Man, it's good to be alive, isn't it? The future looks bright!

We had a bit of a snafu here at the Three Cats Ranch yesterday morning, totally unrelated to cats. (Surprising, I know.)

Since retiring, Mike has been going with me to the grocery store. Truth be told, I think he's trying to keep me out of jail for murdering someone. After all, who would cook if I ended up ...

Block Talk from ... Cat Patches

Happy Halloween! And happy last day of October! And happy "fall back" day! There's so much to be happy about today! For instance, I can look out my office window and see this tree in its fall foliage:

and that makes me happy!

So let's just talk about this quilt block, shall we? I was ready to decide on the final layout for the 12 Appalachian Memories blocks, and I was gnashing my teeth over the math. This first part was easy. Fussy cut a little quilt block from the larger fabric. I'll need 20 of these ...

Quilter's Math from ... Cat Patches

Does it seem to you that the days go by faster and faster all the time? Honestly, I feel as if I've just gotten up, but then I look at the clock, and it's time to make dinner. It makes me think of something one of my social work professors said once. Before moving into academia, she'd worked with the "frail elderly." She told our class that she'd asked one of her clients if time just kept going faster and faster as they got older. They said it did. Oy. I suppose it's like sand ...

Sandwiches Half Made from Cat Patches

Some people might think of sandwiches that are half made as open-faced. Mine are more sad-faced. I was sad to discover I didn't have as much basting spray as I thought. There was only a partial can, plus one more, and I knew it wouldn't be enough to get through eleven quilt sandwiches. Oh well...the best laid plans. We went ahead and set up the sawhorse and plywood tables anyway. I decided to work my way through the smallest ones first, trying to get as many as possible finished. More basting spray is on the way, but ...

Surprise Visit from Cat Patches

Yesterday, I was only just getting started in the sewing room when the phone rang. We don't have a land line any more, and most of the calls that come in on my cell phone are telemarketers...or something. Who the heck knows why they're calling? Anyway...if they aren't in my contacts list, and the name doesn't display, and the call is coming from another state, as this one was, I don't bother answering. About five minutes later, the doorbell rang. I heard the bell, but Mike was upstairs and he answered. If it ...

A Little More Progress from Cat Patches

If the day goes as I think it will today, I should have the Waste Not Whatnots quilt top finished. I'll say one thing about it: it's given me a good reason to procrastinate on vacuuming the downstairs. It is dropping lots of black threads everywhere on the light carpeting. Yesterday, I had good intentions of dusting and vacuuming the downstairs, but then realized I'd be wasting time. Yeah, sure. That's what I thought. You probably thought the same thing, and you just didn't mention it.

So here's how the day went yesterday. Here ...

Busy Day from Cat Patches

We had such a nice visit with the family yesterday evening. For birthdays back in May, there was a question whether I could get a prime rib roast for our birthday feast. Erik and Mae scored a big one at Costco. It was practically the whole side of beef, and we ended up cutting it into four pieces, as I recall. Then, my own local grocery store came through with the one I'd ordered up, and so we had prime rib coming out of our ears. I'd frozen all the ones we didn't use, and so we ...
