Join Jenny, Misty and Natalie in an all new Triple Play featuring three unique patterns utilizing 10″ papers.

In 1899, an unknown quilter began stitching fabric scraps on a paper foundation. Alas, the quilt was never finished. (It happens to us all!) The incomplete top is on display at the Virginia Quilt Museum, and the paper is still intact.

Join Jenny, Natalie and Misty for a Triple Play! featuring three new design of Tumbler quilts.

In the olden days, tumbler quilts were often made with scraps gathered from friends and neighbors. A bit of paisley from Aunt Maude. A stripe or two from Granny.  A pretty toile from Jane next door.

Make your own Weighted Blanket from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

About 10 years ago, my best friend’s mom asked me to bind a quilt she had been working on for her grandson.  She was having trouble with the corners.  I said, yes, of course and was happy to help out.  When she dropped it off it was the strangest thing I had seen.  It was two pieces of adorable fabric layered together, a grid of quilted seams tacked it together, and each square in the grid had something inside of it… This wasn’t batting. It was… heavy, weird, yet interesting: a weighted blanket.

I worked my way around ...

Chess Board Quilt Tutorial from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

A couple months back I watched The Queen’s Gambit on netflix. It’s an excellent mini series that opens up the world of chess and sheds light on how it functioned in the ’60s. It is created from the pages of a novel by Walter Tevis written in 1983 also titled The Queen’s Gambit.

Chess is something that I have never played. I love the checkerboard and all of the pieces that go with the board, like the knights, king, and queen. But no one has ever explained the game to me. The mini series has inspired me ...

HST Zanthia Pillow from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

Zanthia copy

Welcome back, fabric friends!

Today we are featuring one of my favorite and easiest way to create a patchwork pillow, I like to call this one "Zanthia" and if you know about basic half-square triangles, then you'll especially love making this pillow. Once you create the HSTs, all it takes is some cutting and rearranging to complete this look!

Have fun with your fabric choices too, as for this tutorial I kept it simple by using AGF Pure Solids, but play around with some movement by including some prints.

Let's get started!

Half Square Triangle Scraps – Using every bit from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Use every bit of your fabric. This tutorial used the scraps from diagonal cuts.

Have you ever set aside half square triangle scraps with the intent to use them but can’t figure out what to do with them? What do you do with your project scraps? I always feel so good when I save them. They are perfect to use in charity blocks or a scrappie project. As I was working on two of the three Double Pinwheel Quilts I made, I did a little prep work and laid the foundation for a few hundred half square triangles all from scraps. They have been waiting patiently for me in a basket on top ...

Hearts and Gizzards Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

The Hearts and Gizzards Quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Never judge a quilt by its name—even if that name is Swamp Angel, Corn and Beans, or Oklahoma Boomer.

Because if wack-a-doo names scare you off, you will miss gems like this week’s new quilt: Hearts and Gizzards. (Yep, Hearts…and Gizzards.)

The Hearts and Gizzards Quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Hearts and Gizzards is a gorgeous, old-fashioned layer cake pattern composed of pretty hearts that form flowers (or gizzards?). It’s dainty. It’s feminine. And its name is absolutely weird!

Brown Goose Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

The Brown Goose Quilt from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

Before Jenny Doan, there was Nancy Cabot.

During the 1930s, Nancy wrote a column for the Chicago Daily Tribune featuring a new quilt pattern every single day. A diagram of the daily block was printed next to helpful tips and bits of quilt history. (The pattern could be purchased for “5 cents in stamps or coin.”)

Nancy’s column was chatty and casual, like a tea time conversation between friends. I think I would have loved her!

Triple Play! Little Houses from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

I’ll always remember 2020 as the year we stayed home. We wore stretchy pants. We watched movies. We sewed and sewed and sewed (and sewed). And, we baked A LOT of banana bread.

Can you imagine enduring winter in ancient Scandinavia? No electricity. No furnace. No corner grocery store. Just weeks and weeks of darkness, cold, and scarcity.

During the darkest part of winter, my own Swedish ancestors adorned evergreen wreaths with white candles to celebrate Yule, or midwinter. The evergreen boughs symbolized resilience in harsh conditions; the candles, hope for the warmth and light of spring.

Quilting Tips- Learn to Strip Piece Three Different Ways from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

Hello Makers,

When I first started quilting I had no idea how to cut fabric for quilting and using a rotary blade and quilting ruler was so foreign to me coming out of fashion design school. Every time I would cut out my pieces they would end up being a bit too small and wonky but that didn’t stop me from tackling all the tips and techniques I could find about quilting. Weirdly enough I starting designing quilts on the computer before I even new how to put one together, which if you are starting out I definitely don ...
