Oh Scrap! : Back on Track from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

First of all, sorry I missed the link up last week. It was a first in the nine years I have been hosting this weekly event. I totally lost track of time and before I knew it, Sunday was half over. So, feel free to link up your older post if you like.

Gray Bits B Gone from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been busy working on my small gray scraps.

At the end of October, I shared that I was going to start purging my scrap bins of all the tiny bits and make some placemats. I finally finished the ones I made from my gray scrap bin.

I was able to make a total of eight mats in varying shades of gray.

I used a simple improv method of just sewing bits together until I had a piece big enough for a mat. After I quilted them, I trimmed them to 11 x 15".

Oh Scrap! : Some New Starts from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Even though the end of the year is still a couple months away, I am starting to evaluate my scraps to determine what type of scraps I want to focus on next year. My biggest scrap peeve right now is my bins are full of tiny bits (or crumbs).

So 2022 is going to be all about purging those from my scrap bins.

Autumn Jubilee Tablescape from From My Carolina Home

Because this is my favorite season of all, I have a lot of autumn inspired things to use in the kitchen and on the table. September UFO finished and Some Slow Stitching from The Cozy Quilter

Last week, I mentioned that I was doing a UFO challenge with a group of friends starting in October. Since I have way more than 12 UFO's, I decided this week to get one done for the month of September! I quilted the Barn wall hanging earlier in the week and did the binding and hanging sleeve as well before changing the calendar to October!

A Whole Lot of Binding! from The Cozy Quilter

This was my week for hand stitching binding, among other projects. I finished hand stitching the binding on these three placemats for Meals on Wheels last weekend. I now have 12 made for the Elgin Piecemakers donation and three for the Oxford Guild donation.

Black and White Colour Blocks and More Placemats from The Cozy Quilter

This week, I had to cut a few extra black and white squares to finish these blocks but all 25 are done now. I have these blocks up on my design wall while I contemplate sashing/border options. I used up all sorts of small bits and pieces in my black and white stash so now my variety in these fabrics is depleted a bit. I will not be buying more for the time being.

Placemat Production from The Cozy Quilter

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, aunts, grandmothers and others who nurture their friends and families!

I have been working hard this week to finish off my 12 placemats for Meals on Wheels. I used up some of my batting scraps strips, zigzagged together for this project--the bin is still full...sigh. I fear that all of my scrap bins are bottomless, somewhat like Mary Poppin's duffle bag. The scraps for these three placemats are leftovers from a quilt I made for my aunt a couple of years ago. The placemats are about 12” by 18”.

Spring to Winter and Back to Spring Again from The Cozy Quilter

We had weird weather this week...Spring and then Winter and then Spring again! Finn not too keen to go outside on Wednesday morning but did eventually do what he needed to do. Then he stuck his face in the snow before coming back inside to snuggle with me on the couch while I hand stitched some binding on the placemats I made for Meals on Wheels.

It melted right away on the driveway and sidewalks so at least we did not have to shovel it! By Friday, it had all melted and we were in our spring jackets again ...

We revisited Greenbelt and Ray Lake Forest Preserves on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. It was sunny but cool with very little wind. The tree swallows are establishing their nests in the nesting boxes. The flowers are trout lilies and [a yellow flower I have to i.d.]

Last in, first out -- I pieced Jumbo Waffles last week. I quilted it in a simple grid using the walking foot. I pieced the four left over blocks into the back before they could be consigned to the orphan box.

The colours for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this month are light and medium/bright blue so I made two more blocks for my RSC challenge quilt for 2021. I used 17 different blues in each block.

Finally. Two more kawandi placemats complete. There were only three birds so these have none and the scrap colors are much louder. I decided to pull a smaller, coordinated collection of scraps from the bag to add cohesion... Maybe. Reds in the first round established strong perimeters. I tried adding tiklis but am still not good at it. They usually occur to me after a round of stitching.

Quilted Placemats from Seaside Stitches

I just finished six quilted placemats for my sister. When she saw the ones I made for myself last summer, she asked for a set. Here are three of my six. We've used them almost every day since July, they've been washed a bunch of times, and still look great. They are improv pieced from scraps, which I find extremely entertaining. The straight parallel quilting lines hold everything together nicely.

Island Batik January Challenge - Placemats from Sew Preeti Quilts

The Island Batik January challenge is Placemats.

The Island Batik box included a pack of 10" squares of "Blinded by Science" designed by Jackie Kunkel of Canton Village Quiltworks. The solid gray yardage was also provided by Island Batiks.

I used the 70/10 Microtex Sharp Needle by Schmetz Needles that was part of the Island Batik Box.
