Last of the Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been working on placemats for almost ten months now!  I did enjoy making them but I have to admit, I am glad this project is finished and I can clean up my sewing room.  Working continually with these tiny scraps has wreaked havoc around my hose....They were everywhere!

When I started this project, I purged my fabric stash of unloved pieces that would make good backings for placemats.  About two months ago, I started focusing on making the tops for the backings I had.  That is why for the last few postings, the colors have been a ...

Placemat Status Check from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I received a call from my contact at Meals on Wheels to start coordinating the delivery of my donated placemats.  She would like me to deliver them to their office before the end of October.

This is a few weeks earlier than I was planning so my goal of 200 is probably not going to happen.

I thought I would get a status check on where I am currently at and what is hiding out in the pipeline.

I finished sewing on the bindings on a few colors.  Here are a few in orange.

Followed by a few in purple ...

September Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I know it is only mid-month, but I have completed a bunch of placemats and I wanted to share them with you.

I made a couple from some orphan blocks.  I have to say, these go together far faster than those that I make from tiny scraps!

Here are two purple and two orange scrappy placemats.  Some of these were quilted quite a while ago.  I have a big stack of these waiting for me to sew the binding.  I try to hand sew at least one a night.

In a previous post, I shared I found a bag of ...

August Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I know I showed you a few placemats earlier this month, but I have a few more that I finished this month.

I am still working my way through the purple scraps.  Lots of triangles and tiny strings in this color.  I think I only have about two more to do and then I can move onto orange.

I also used some bits from the orphan block suitcase to make these two mats.

That brings the total up to 136 placemats.  I am still hoping to hit 200 by November.
That means I had better get sewing!

(And because I ...

Proof I Have Been Sewing from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been focused on some home improvements over the last couple of months.  That has really been invading my sewing time.  But hopefully soon everything will be finished for the year.

(Oh, I can't wait!)

I feel like I have been not getting anything done on my projects but I keep reminding myself I am making some progress.

I have finished another nine placemats in the last few weeks.

These two blue ones came out of the Orphan block/spare parts block.  The turquoise binding is a bit bright but I am trying to use up the solids ...

July Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am so glad this placemat project is only for one year.  Having so many stacks of scraps around have sure been disruptive.  I am still working on the color blue - the scraps in these bins are so small!

Here are six I finished. I am trying to use up some of my solids for the bindings, so some of these were bound with a dark teal.

Here are five more that are finished.  I still think I have some blue waiting to be quilted or bound.  They will have to be added in August.  But I have started on ...

Summer Squirrels are Happening from Needle and Foot

Happy 4th everyone! It sure doesn’t feel like July here. We are having a bout of unseasonably cool weather and the high for today is only supposed to be 69 degrees (about 20 degrees C). We are heading to my sister’s house for a BBQ but it won’t be very warm out!

Whenever I am ‘supposed’ to be working on something it seems like everything but that project appeals to me. Why does this happen? I should be working on piecing the blocks for the 2022 Positivity QAL. I have the pieces cut and I did get ...

June Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I can't believe we are nearing the end of June already!

Time to share the placemats I finished this month.

Unfortunately this month was mostly spent finishing up the green placemats I pulled all the scraps for in May.  Here are eight more ready for the "Done" pile.

I also finished up two more that were made from orphan blocks or spare parts that have been hanging around for eons.  It feels good to finally put these to good use.

I did finish one lone blue placemat.  I have a bunch more in the works but so far this ...

Happy National Sewing Machine Day #1 (2022) from Cheryl's Teapots2Quilting

Today is the first National Sewing Machine Day of 2022!  (the 2nd day is September 10th).  To celebrate, I'm showing you a treadle that I cleaned and serviced for a friend.  This was his grandmother's treadle that had been in his mother's attic for years.

dirty after sitting in an attic for years

pretty treadle peddle

nice treadle irons

wood cabinet in distressed shape

first photo I received of the treadle

The leather strap that attaches the machine lift to the table extension had snapped and wasn't fixable.  Hubby fixed this by using black paracord, which ...

Sewing and a New Design Wall from Cheryl's Teapots2Quilting

I was asked to make some placemats for a friend.  She wanted something that looked like Spring/Flowers.  I'd seen something online years ago (can't remember where), and decided to do something similar.

I made 4 different blocks, using fabrics from the Pioneer Woman collection.

Then I cut each block into quarters, and stitched a quarter of each block into a center square block.

I then used some of the extra strips I'd cut to make side pieces.

placemats

I finished 8 of these placemat tops.  I have the center squares stitched to make another set of ...

Placemats for May from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

In April, I finished my pink placemats really early in the month.  So I decided to get out my black and multi-colored scraps and work on those.

Boy, do I have a lot to share this month!

Here are six I made from black scraps.  I always try and sort them into alike colors.

Here are four more.  I ran out of solid black fabric for the bindings so I have been using some coordinating grays and browns.

I also took a deeper dive into my orphan blocks and pulled out bits to make these 6 placemats.

I even disassembled ...

Pink Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I find it interesting that each of my color bins seem to have their own personality.

My pink bins is currently cluttered with long skinny strings and lots of small triangles.

So my pink placemats for April are filled with them.

Here are four I bound with a light pink solid.

And two more I finished up with a darker pink binding.

I also finished one featuring Kaffe Fassett fabrics.  I used some of the leftover triangles from my recently started hexagon quilt.  I wrote about it in my last post.

So I only added 7 to the stack this ...

March Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

March was a very productive month for my placemat project.  I finished a total of 19!

For those who are not familiar with this project - at the end of the year all of these will go to my local Meals on Wheels to be handed out with one of the holiday meals.

I finished up the last of the brown mats I started in February.  Five I framed in a dark brown binding and five I framed in a lighter brown.

I don't have a lot of small yellow scraps, so I was only able to finish up four ...

February Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This month, between all of my other projects, I have been working away on my teal and aqua placemats.

I made four darker turquoise.  I sure had a lot of odd triangles in this color that I just incorporated in with all the strings and such.

I also made four in some lighter aqua shades.  The top right is one I made with some orphan bits I already had on hand.

Once I finished all the placemats in this month's RSC color, I decided to pull a bunch of scraps from my overflowing brown bin.  I have already finished ...

Orphans into Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been continuing to make placemats for my yearlong project.  I have been busily sewing turquoise crumbs this month.  But I also pulled a bunch of orphan blocks to turn into some too.

I had a bunch of gray and red strip sets to make these large checkerboards.

A lone star block that made for a quick finish.

Some super old majestic mountain blocks that were perfect for this project.  These orphaned blocks would probably never find another home.

And then some pink flower blocks.

I think there are two more made from orphan blocks but they are lost ...

Then This Happened from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

A few days ago, I had the bright idea to rummage through my orphan blocks to see if there were any I wanted to turn into some quick placemats.

It seemed like a bright idea because look at the state of my orphan block storage.  I have a cute little suitcase that I keep my orphans in and this is no it.  This is the big box I had to start using because my suitcase is overstuffed.

So digging out a few for placemats seemed like a win.

But then this happened....small bits in pretty green and oranges ended ...

Two More Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I almost had a quilt finish to share today but I am still sewing n the binding.

So I guess I will just have to share two other small finishes I had this week.

I quilted and bound the last two gray placemats I made.  I always enjoy seeing how different they look just by how you group the fabrics together.

Here are the backing fabrics I found in my stash.

That means I have now finished 13 gray mats - which means there are a total of 31 placemats finished to date.

I hope the new RSC color gets announced ...

January's Placemats from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

One of my RSC projects this year is to sew my crumb scraps in the monthly color into placemats.

I have already finished them for the month of January.  I knew there were not going to be that many made because I didn't have that many crumbs in red.

Sorry - I forgot to take a phot of the backings.

But I did take a photo of the growing stack.  To date there are 29 finished.

I am already looking forward to seeing what the next month's color is.  I am really enjoying making these - they are really cleaning ...

Seventeen is Enough from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

On this last day of 2021, I don't have any quilt finishes to share but I do have a big stack of placemats completed.

I decided last month that I was going to spent about 12 months sewing all my scrappy crumbs into monochromatic placemats and then donate all of them to a charity around the holidays next year.  In December, I tackled my low volume scraps.

Here are three red and three blue that were completed.

I am finding it most rewarding to be using up fabrics that I find undesirable on the back side.
Here are the ...
