Sidetracked, or is it derailed............................. from Exuberant Color

There is a table in my main floor studio that I have been slowly cleaning off (we're talking piles here) and when I say slowly, it is like 2 items a day.  One of the items yesterday was a little 4" x 4" bag of small batik pieces.

The 7" ruler gives you an idea how small the pieces were.  They were all end pieces when I was cutting some project a few years ago and I couldn't throw them in the trash.

I decided to piece them into strips, 4 of which would make a little mug ...

Lazy................. from Exuberant Color

I had a hard time getting motivated to do anything yesterday.  Some days are like that.

In the afternoon I went searching for candidates for the setting triangles and corner triangles and came up with this group of 10.  There are 8 side triangles and 4 corners.  I could use 8 different ones for the sides and the same one for all 4 corners and just use 9 of the10....or chose 2 for the side triangles and use the same 2 on all 4 sides for a total of 3 needed.  I just didn't want to make a ...

Searching................. from Exuberant Color

I went back to the black and white stash to find something for setting triangles.  The first one I found that had enough yardage was just too bold compared to the background fabrics in the blocks.

I went back to the stash and found 2 more larger yardage pieces (I mentioned yesterday I have lots of 1/4 yard pieces and some 1/2 yard pieces but not many larger yardage).  The bottom one is too dark and I'm not sure if I like the top one.

One of the zebra prints is light enough but being a one ...

This and that............... from Exuberant Color

The first day of every month is usually spent looking through things, attempting to clean off a table, just miscellaneous things.

I have had the 2 fabrics laying on my die cutter for over a week so I finally cut the pieces I needed for one more block.

I sewed the last block and then sewed this piece together.  It will be the center of a medallion quilt, to be designed slowly, a little at a time.  It is approximately 30" x 40" right now.

With those pieces off the design wall I could do the layout for these pinwheel ...

Little decisions.......................... from Exuberant Color

From the remaining 4 contenders for backing, I chose the fish, mainly because its best use would be a backing.  The other 3 could be cut in smaller pieces for patchwork where the fish print is pretty large.

I'm getting ready to cut the purple Kaffe collective fabrics for the next Rosy quilt.  This is 4 fabrics stacked and I have decided on 3" finished squares for 9" nine patches.

While cleaning off a table I found 13 pinwheel blocks.  There are duplicates of some of them, 3 in each of 2 colors, 2 in each of 3 more ...

Just playing................... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was the first day this week without strong wind so I went grocery shopping and filled my gas tank.

When I got to the sewing machine I continued sewing triangle squares and then decided to play with some of the parts in the box.  If I decide to sew this block I need to start sewing more hourglass blocks.  I have a couple more ideas to try too.

This is one of the racks in the basement that I can see now that the excess design walls are gone.  On top is interfacing and fusible fleece, next shelf down ...

Red, Black and White 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

This is as far as I have got with mixing more than two colours in basic 9P blocks … and the results can be stunning if you like the colours!

The half blocks around the edge of the second design are interesting!

Thinking more than doing.............. from Exuberant Color

One of my readers wondered if Marcia Derse fabrics would work with the Terrie Mangat fabrics.  Marcia's newest line, Marble Run, does have some that will work and will give me the almost solid look for some of the pieces.

This Nancy Crow black/white stripe might work.  I have the opposite piece also, white/black.

This uneven black/white check might work too.  I will cut some pieces to do some mockups.

I may not use all of the Marcia Derse fabrics but I have a good selection to choose from.

I also found 3 black/white prints ...

Black and white day............ from Exuberant Color

The black and white fabrics needed to be in a place where I could see them better.  They were in a hard to reach place before and had become very unorganized.

Top shelf left to right: stripes and checks/plaids (and a few graphic prints); large prints; dots, spots and circles; large yardage.

Second shelf: Positive/negative (black with white and white with black, the same print); miscellaneous; miscelaneous; animal print (mostly zebra and giraffe).

What isn't shown here: a pile of black and whites that read as gray (approximately equal amounts of black and white in the print ...

In Celebration of Trees from The Snarky Quilter

Every spring I am delighted to watch the trees behind my house green up. I want to nibble that delicate tender green as it begins with the weedy understory and creeps up the taller trees. I wait for the old apple tree and the wild dogwoods in the middle of the woods to bloom. And I celebrate the tulip poplar that has taken root at the verge of the back lawn.

However, before all the leafing out began I took many photos of tree trunks and logs that I encountered along the tow path, and played with them in Photoshop ...

Red, Black and White 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

I am trying to break away from pink, purple and green!

This project file has been sitting around being ignored for two years, probably because it is in colors I wouldn’t want to live with. However, strong colours in a dull environment can liven up the surroundings.

I love the second design, but I admit that it would lose a lot of impact if it was in my preferred colour range.

Black and White, but not all over from Art In Search

Long ago, I participated in a star swap with Barb Vedder. It used black and white prints in the center and solids for the stars. They came out lovely. I made some extra. And then they sat until I figured out what to do with them to make a quilt.

Adding another row of flying geese all around, making a star within a star, looked appealing to me. I had to scrounge to find enough different solids. I make my Flying Geese with the Easy Angle and the Companion Ruler. If I cut right, no trimming, YAY!

     However, I arrived ...

Previous black and white quilts............. from Exuberant Color

I have made a few black and white quilts/quilt tops in the past.  This Trip Around the World is all batiks.

This Strips and Curves is made with regular quilting cottons.  Some of the pieces are cut out of strip piecing made with 1" finished strips.

I started out with a Maple Island pattern for this quilt but didn't do the border like the pattern.

I have a love/hate relationship with all black and white quilts and that is because I love color so much.

I have figured out 3 quilts that I'm going to cut ...

Is it ready to sew?............ from Exuberant Color

Every time I walked into the studio I moved blocks.  That went on all day but I didn't want to sew it until I see it again this morning.

I have a couple quilts in mind for my black and white batiks.  It will take awhile to cut them so this will be an all week project.  The black and white batiks were really popular in the mid to late 1990s and the majority of these were purchased while I was working at a quilt shop.  Lots of them are Princess Mirah batiks. Hoffman came out with black and ...

A Quilting Life Block of the Month (Jan's Quilt) from Sew........This Is My Blog

If you need more projects to work on or you're looking for a quilty podcast to listen to, check out Sherri's blog, A Quilting Life.  Just after the Covid isolation began my quilty friend Denise used that blog to entice me into doing a Mystery Block of the Month as a sew-along with her.  It turns out this Mystery BOM is an annual thing.  Now she's talked me and three other neighbors into making the 2022 mystery quilt.  More about that later.

The 2020 quilt was designed using all half-square-triangles.  I decided to use bright batiks .....

Hampton Court Quilt Pattern - A Scrappy Black and White Throw Quilt! from Busy Hands Quilts

Today I'm sharing another Hampton Court quilt.  This time it's a scrappy black and white quilt.  Some of my favorite fabrics to collect are black prints with just white in them.  They're so versatile.

Hampton Court is a great stash-busting quilt pattern that calls for fat quarters or yardage, and it's super easy to translate that into using fabric from your scrap bins.

The Hampton Court quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

The Hampton Court Design

The design in the Hampton Court quilt pattern is found in the brickwork on the exterior ...

PQ 12. 6 Ab Intra challenge from Sew Sunshine

So Project Quilting 12.6 challenge is Ab Intra -Latin for 'from within'.  Once again I wanted to combine scraps for #nationalquiltingmonth #sewthescrapoutofmarch all month long. I thought of a couple things I could do but came back to starting with my favorite color combo black and white...and use prints I had in my scrap pile. The center sort of represents me and then building bits around is kind of like building on experiences. Using scraps was perfect for that because you never know what you will run into.

I got out some cardboard and did some measurements to ...
