Decision................ from Exuberant Color

All of the blocks were finished and pressed yesterday morning so I had to make a decision on the layout.  I needed to clean off my work table.  I decided it will be sashing, but wider than I originally tried.  I was thinking 1" finished when I first showed the fabrics, but I decided yesterday that the blocks need a little more space between them.  Now I'm planning on 1.5" finished sashing.  I haven't decided if there will be cornerstones yet.  I'm putting this aside now and will work on something else, plus I'm still ...

Not much................... from Exuberant Color

Some cutting was done in the morning to prepare for evening sewing.  Then at night it started thundering as another storm rolled through so I unplugged  my machine.  I did get the stripe triangles sewn on the last 4 nine patches.  At the left are the 2 new colors of floral triangles to surround all of the rest of the blocks.  Once they are all done I need to made the decision of the layout and size of quilt.

It was dark and dreary for much of the day with one rainstorm earlier in the afternoon.

Even my choice of ...

Still thinking................... from Exuberant Color

As I navigated the day's adventures, I was continually thinking about the project.  I have mentioned more than once that I have a short attention span, which means I get bored if I work too long on something.  So here is where I am now: top left is 20 finished 6" blocks, all pressed, top right 12 more finished blocks not pressed, bottom left 4 more waiting for floral corners (need to cut more) and 4 nine patches that I may or may not use in this project.

Here are my options.  If I used sashing with the 36 ...

That was fun!......................... from Exuberant Color

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with an opinion on the auditioning yesterday  I especially enjoyed reading the explanations why the commenter liked the fabric.  Every fabric got some votes with the random line fabric getting the most.  I think it was pretty evenly divided between sashing and alternate blocks.  I didn't make any decision yet and just finished sewing round one on 8 more blocks last night.  One of the biggest surprises to me in my choices was the first one, the dotted ombre fabric.  Even if I don't use that in this quilt, I can see ...

Sewing and auditioning................ from Exuberant Color

I cut some more 3" triangles and sewed the floral triangles onto a few blocks and cut more quarter square triangles.  I got some of them sewn on but a few more to go.

Now the auditioning.  I was looking through my stash for white with black dots.  I have several yards of this one. This is the 22" width of it as it is folded like it comes off the bolt.  I have plenty to just cut the center lightest area for sashing strips.  Maybe the darker area could be used as borders.

I found a half yard of ...

Finding more choices................... from Exuberant Color

There were more black/irory Marcia Derse fabrics that I thought I should audition for the sashing on the table runner.

I put 4 of the 5 crazy pieced blocks on top of them.  I may have to remove the light strips on the edge of 2 of the blocks and replace them with something darker.

I turned the two with light edge strips to touch other fabrics.

I had pulled this fabric for the first photos thinking it was too dark, but I still had to try it with the crazy pieced blocks.  No decisions made.

It got up ...

Table runner and black and white........................... from Exuberant Color

The hand stitched binding was finished last night on this table runner.  It is all Marcia Derse fabrics.  The back is the same fabric as the binding.  It is 14.75" x 40".

You might find the rest of this post boring, but since it is my diary/journal I use it to document some things.  Today I am documenting the batik black and white fabrics.

Yesterday I sorted them by more than a quarter yard, quarter yard or less but full width, and chunks/small pieces narrower than full width.

I would estimate that 85% of them are Bali ...

A little bit of everything................. from Exuberant Color

I had a few things to take care of in the basement so while I was down there I got this little quilt ready for basting.  It didn't keep my interest though so I moved on.

My friend who visited on Monday wanted to buy some black and white batik fabrics for this quilt.  I had the fabrics in 2 bins and had large and small pieces all mixed together.

I want to sort through them now and get all of the small pieces in one bin and large pieces in the other bin.  There is a lot more ...

Quilting the pinwheels................. from Exuberant Color

When I got home from PT yesterday I basted this little pinwheel quilt and started quilting it last night.  I'm ditch quilting this one with white thread.  I have 9 more rows to stitch and then I can trim it and choose binding.  I have a feeling it will be a black and white stipe binding.

I wasn't sure if I was going to order any of the new Kaffe line "from the archives" since I still had some pieces of the original fabrics.  There were however 2 that I didn't have and 4 that I was ...

First finish for December 2025.................... from Exuberant Color

The quilting wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be.  The story behind this is that the 4 star blocks were a little too large for the flying geese strips added around them.  That means I did a lot of easing and stretching and the center didn't lay as flat as most of my quilts.  I tamed it pretty well with only one little tuck. I named this one Game Board.

I'm glad I used the fun fish fabric on the back.  The fabrics are Kaffe collective.  It is 39" square and was quilted on my ...

Sidetracked, or is it derailed............................. from Exuberant Color

There is a table in my main floor studio that I have been slowly cleaning off (we're talking piles here) and when I say slowly, it is like 2 items a day.  One of the items yesterday was a little 4" x 4" bag of small batik pieces.

The 7" ruler gives you an idea how small the pieces were.  They were all end pieces when I was cutting some project a few years ago and I couldn't throw them in the trash.

I decided to piece them into strips, 4 of which would make a little mug ...

Lazy................. from Exuberant Color

I had a hard time getting motivated to do anything yesterday.  Some days are like that.

In the afternoon I went searching for candidates for the setting triangles and corner triangles and came up with this group of 10.  There are 8 side triangles and 4 corners.  I could use 8 different ones for the sides and the same one for all 4 corners and just use 9 of the10....or chose 2 for the side triangles and use the same 2 on all 4 sides for a total of 3 needed.  I just didn't want to make a ...

Searching................. from Exuberant Color

I went back to the black and white stash to find something for setting triangles.  The first one I found that had enough yardage was just too bold compared to the background fabrics in the blocks.

I went back to the stash and found 2 more larger yardage pieces (I mentioned yesterday I have lots of 1/4 yard pieces and some 1/2 yard pieces but not many larger yardage).  The bottom one is too dark and I'm not sure if I like the top one.

One of the zebra prints is light enough but being a one ...

This and that............... from Exuberant Color

The first day of every month is usually spent looking through things, attempting to clean off a table, just miscellaneous things.

I have had the 2 fabrics laying on my die cutter for over a week so I finally cut the pieces I needed for one more block.

I sewed the last block and then sewed this piece together.  It will be the center of a medallion quilt, to be designed slowly, a little at a time.  It is approximately 30" x 40" right now.

With those pieces off the design wall I could do the layout for these pinwheel ...

Little decisions.......................... from Exuberant Color

From the remaining 4 contenders for backing, I chose the fish, mainly because its best use would be a backing.  The other 3 could be cut in smaller pieces for patchwork where the fish print is pretty large.

I'm getting ready to cut the purple Kaffe collective fabrics for the next Rosy quilt.  This is 4 fabrics stacked and I have decided on 3" finished squares for 9" nine patches.

While cleaning off a table I found 13 pinwheel blocks.  There are duplicates of some of them, 3 in each of 2 colors, 2 in each of 3 more ...

Just playing................... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was the first day this week without strong wind so I went grocery shopping and filled my gas tank.

When I got to the sewing machine I continued sewing triangle squares and then decided to play with some of the parts in the box.  If I decide to sew this block I need to start sewing more hourglass blocks.  I have a couple more ideas to try too.

This is one of the racks in the basement that I can see now that the excess design walls are gone.  On top is interfacing and fusible fleece, next shelf down ...

Red, Black and White 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

This is as far as I have got with mixing more than two colours in basic 9P blocks … and the results can be stunning if you like the colours!

The half blocks around the edge of the second design are interesting!

Thinking more than doing.............. from Exuberant Color

One of my readers wondered if Marcia Derse fabrics would work with the Terrie Mangat fabrics.  Marcia's newest line, Marble Run, does have some that will work and will give me the almost solid look for some of the pieces.

This Nancy Crow black/white stripe might work.  I have the opposite piece also, white/black.

This uneven black/white check might work too.  I will cut some pieces to do some mockups.

I may not use all of the Marcia Derse fabrics but I have a good selection to choose from.

I also found 3 black/white prints ...

Black and white day............ from Exuberant Color

The black and white fabrics needed to be in a place where I could see them better.  They were in a hard to reach place before and had become very unorganized.

Top shelf left to right: stripes and checks/plaids (and a few graphic prints); large prints; dots, spots and circles; large yardage.

Second shelf: Positive/negative (black with white and white with black, the same print); miscellaneous; miscelaneous; animal print (mostly zebra and giraffe).

What isn't shown here: a pile of black and whites that read as gray (approximately equal amounts of black and white in the print ...
