More hand stitching................ from Exuberant Color

I have 3 more hours into the hand stitching of the binding on this Tilda Whimsy quilt so I have 2 1/2 sides done.  Maybe 2 more evenings and it will be done.

I did more die cutting yesterday on the batiks strips that are between 3" and 6" wide.  I'm cutting 2" x 3.5" rectangles, 2.5" x 4.5" rectangles and 2" squares.  The piece that is leftover on most of the pieces is large enough to cut two 2.5" squares or 4 triangles.  I'll do them later.  This is the group I ...

Binding started.............................. from Exuberant Color

The binding on this Tilda Whimsey quilt might take about 5 nights for the hand stitching.  That will still make it in as a finish for April.

I had several balls of cotton yarn in this coloration but in the others there was a wide stripe of coral color next to the brown.  This one looks like they ran out of dye when they were making it.  This is a strange one.  There is enough yarn left to make one smaller dishcloth but I may just use some of it in a multicolor one where I'm using all of ...

Trimming................ from Exuberant Color

I usually stay in the basement while the washing machine is running so I can transfer the clothes to the dryer before I go back upstairs.

Yesterday while I was down there I decided to trim the Tilda Whimsey quilt and cut the binding for it.  Also, look at that cute backing fabric.  I bought it on sale a while back thinking it would be perfect for some future quilt.  The background is gray and the bicycles are so cute.  It is not a Tilda fabric.  I couldn't see spending the money for a Tilda fabric backing.

I have ...

A day for binding..................... from Exuberant Color

I decided to spend all of my sewing time on the binding on this Tilda quilt yesterday.  I made it around to the 4th corner and a few more inches.  I have 40" left to stitch on one short side.

I realized yesterday that the backing fabric looked like a black print in my photos.  I put it under my Ottlite and took a close up.  It is medium blue and navy blue on a cream color background.  It goes really well with the blue Tilda fabrics.

We got some rain yesterday and I didn't get my rain gauge ...

Making progress................ from Exuberant Color

I needed to clean off the top of my sewing cabinet so 11 Broken Dishes blocks got sewn and the rest of the triangles went back into the 3" Kaffe fabric parts box.  I will probably put these blocks in the Kaffe orphan block box for now.

Next up was trimming the Tilda 16 patch quilt and cutting the binding strips.

The backing fabric was a purchase around 1975-6.  It was 38" wide.  I always liked the woodblock type prints and the color of this one went well with the Tilda fabrics.

I always start my hand sewing a few ...

A Busy Two Weeks from The Cozy Quilter

I was away last weekend and did not have time to blog before I left so today's post is a catch up on what I have been up to for the last couple of weeks.  I am happy to report that I have finished hand quilting my Arizona quilt and I am now working on getting the binding hand stitched and adding a sleeve and label.

The Oxford Quilter's Guild show is the coming up very soon and I have registered 12 quilts in the show.  Most of them do not have hanging sleeves yet so that will ...

Binding by Machine Video Tutorial from Alamosa Quilter

I had a chance to film and edit the second "class" in my binding series. In this video I show how to sew the binding on a project completely by machine. First sewing the binding to the front of the quilt and then stitching in the ditch along the edge of the binding on the front to catch the binding on the back side of the project.

As I mentioned in the video, this is just ONE way to attach binding completely by machine. There are several other methods and in time I plan to film them all.

If you ...

Purple Haze from Romany Quilting

My purple clam shells are finally finished.  This quilt started way back in May 1993 when I attended the 5th National Patchwork and Quilting Symposium in Upper Hutt.  This was a very exciting time for New Zealand quilters.  Big name American quilters like Caryl Bryer Fallert and Ruth McDowell were taking classes, along with Australian and New Zealand tutors.  Sadly, I can't remember the name of the tutor I had for the clam shell class.   We were shown how to cut out the clam shell shapes with an acyclic shape and a small rotary cutter, and how to stitch ...

Binding finished, and more to start.............. from Exuberant Color

The binding is finished on the batik quilt and I'll take photos today.  This is the time of year when the sunshine coming in the windows warms up the house and the heat doesn't come on.  That makes the basement quite chilly.  Since we are still going down in the 30s at night, the heat will come on in the morning and that's when I'll go down there to take the photos.

The two Tilda quilts are back from the longarmer and I have chosen the binding for both of them.

This is the last Sedum ...

Improvements to physical mobility from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

I swear Brooke (my personal trainer) is trying to kill me! Her philosophy is, let's just sneak a bit more weight on there when Elaine isn't looking! But all is good, and my mobility continues to improve. I'm not so sure about the tightness in my muscles, but I can only hope! I need to do more stretching at home, but there are definite improvements, so all the hard work is worth it!

I don't want to say that yesterday was a total bust because there was some significant learning involved, some sewing, but not much ...

Cutting, sorting, binding................. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I die cut 17 more fabric strips into rectangles and squares for Colorwash.  I had previously cut 43 fabrics and have 43 more fabric strips to go.  Since I usually use only one of each print in a colorwash this 100+ group of cut pieces are just a portion of what I will need.

While the washing machine was running I looked through some embroideries I have done in the past for these 2 pieces.  I want to do another quilt with this style block.  The one on the left was a sample block for a quilt I ...

Cutting. hand sewing.................. from Exuberant Color

I pulled out these 3 dies to start cutting a pile of batiks.  They are all pieces less than 1/4 yard wide, most between 3 and 6" wide

I pressed this pile of strips a couple weeks ago so it was time to do the cutting.  I'm doing 1 hour a day and have worked on it on 3 days so far.

There are 4 pieces of most of the fabrics and only 2 of a few.  These will be worked onto the trays of pieces that have been cut over several years.  As soon as the pile ...

Quilting and binding................... from Exuberant Color

I had 2 sessions of ditch quilting around the light centers of some of the blocks in the Crooked Cobblestone quilt.  I have one more day on light centers and then can choose a different color to do.

I have 2 quilts to bind and this one was already trimmed so I started with it.  In this photo  have attached the binding by machine.

There are 3 fabric strips on the back of the quilt.  The one on the right was full width and the other 2 were cutaways from previous backs.  I have started the hand sewing on the ...

Almost there................... from Exuberant Color

Another day of hand stitching, 4 corners done.  I still have about 45" to stitch on the last side.

It went from hot to cold yesterday as the front went through and the severe storms stayed south of us.

I will post this photo again in my monthly recap, but since it's the only other photo I took yesterday I'll share it today too.  These are my 11 littles finished in March.  I did 3 in January and 3 in February so there are 17 finished so far this year.  There was only one I didn't get ...

Binding again............................ from Exuberant Color

I trimmed this quilt and cut the binding and got it sewn onto the quilt.  I have one long side hand stitched.  This is the last of the neutral batik 16 patch quilts and the smallest one.

I had a couple outside sessions yesterday since it was still warm.  I have the stalks cleared on the first of three Sedum plants.

I also trimmed off the old leaves from last year on the Lenten Rose plants.  I left a couple on the center plant because I was getting tired of bending over.  I raked out most of the leaves too ...

It was an outside day..................... from Exuberant Color

It was in the high 70s yesterday so I decided to do some yard work.  First I raked leaves off the flowerbeds where the Brunnera and Lungwort are.  I only found one Lungwort plant in bloom but I'm sure several will follow soon.

The largest Columbine plant is growing fast.  I could see this one from the dining room window.  I got stung by a bee while picking up stacks of leaves in this flowerbed.

One of my Lenten Rose plants has flowers and more buds.  It is a burgundy color flower.  This is the plant that didn't ...

Final layout................ from Exuberant Color

I added the 2 light leftover blocks back in and took out 2 darker ones.  Here is the comparison of Monday's layout with yesterday's layout.  The one on the right is the final layout.  I stacked and numbered the columns and brought them up to the main floor studio.  I got the seams all sewn in one direction and I'll finish the sewing today.

I finished hand sewing the binding on the second red/gray mug rug.

The backing on both of them is the same fabric as the binding.  They are 8.5" square.

I checked ...

Layout................. from Exuberant Color

I did the layout of the Tilda 16 patch in two stages.  First I put up all of these blocks, of which there are 4 in each combination, spacing out the duplicates.

Then I cut 5 blocks from the remaining ladies print and removed 16 patch blocks to put them in the  mix.  The 2 leftover blocks are light so I may put one of them back into the bottom row.  I'll look at this again this morning and decide on the final layout and then stack and label the columns to prepare for webbing the top.

I quilted ...

Working on small things................ from Exuberant Color

The binding is finished on this small piece.  It finished at 12.25" square.  The backing is the same as the one yesterday.

I found 6 more small pieces to finish.  I cut batting and backings for all of them.

I started the quilting with 2 that I could use the same color thread on.  I used a red/black variegated 12 weight thread on top.

I used 3 different thread colors quilting this one.  It is 8" square.  I'll look for binding for these 3 today.

We had rain late in the afternoon yesterday.  I haven't put ...

Table mat finish................ from Exuberant Color

This wavy stripe was my choice for the binding of the 2 table mats.  It is a red purple although it may look brown on your monitor or phone.

It looks good with both sides of the mat.  This one is 15" square.

The background on this backing fabric is purple even though it may appear as black or navy on your monitor.

I have started the hand stitching of the binding on the smaller mat too.

I spent more time cutting a batting and preparing 2 backings for larger quilts yesterday, about 2 hours standing on the cement floor ...
