Binding started................. from Exuberant Color

This is the binding fabric I chose for the batik pineapple log cabin quilt.

I got it sewn onto the quilt and started the hand stitching.  I started at the middle of a short side and made it past the first corner.

I do my hand stitching in my studio because I have excellent bright light in there.  I pile the quilt on my cabinet and on the 3 drawer chest that I can pull out from under the left side of the cabinet.  Then I just scoot forward in my chair on wheels and start stitching.  I can easily ...

BINDING MITERED SEAM FINISH - TUTORIAL from Kwilty Pleasures

Let's talk about making a beautiful
Mitered Seam Finish for Binding!
Don't loose me here...it's really very easy.
I make my binding 2 1/2" so these instructions are
written for that.  You can adjust to 2 1/4 by adjusting some
measurements as needed

It's all about tails...binding tails!

Lay the binding down onto the quilt...
Leave a 10" loose tail and begin sewing to quilt
at the 10" mark, back stitch to secure.

Sew all the binding on around the quilt.
When you get to the last edge of the quilt....
STOP ...

DIAGONAL QUILT FOLDING - TUTORIAL from Kwilty Pleasures

Diagonal Quilt Folding Tutorial

After many trunk shows and demos
I decided to write a quick tutorial on how to
and why I fold quilts on the diagonal.

When I do a trunk show for guilds or groups
I ask that members come to the tables after I am finished
and I show them how to fold and then let them help
me fold all the quilts I have just shown!

WHY ON THE DIAGONAL
This helps eliminate the deep folds that batting remembers
and will help keep the quilts nice and flat.

Step 1
Lay quilt on flat surface ...

Stitching Everyday! from The Cozy Quilter

Kathy, our Slow Sunday Stitching organizer and cheerleader, keeps a journal/calendar where she documents what she sews/knits etc.  each day.  I decided I would track my stitching activities each day this year on a wall calendar which I will keep in my sewing room. So far, I have stitched and/or knitted every day this year!  We will see how this goes.  I don't have a goal of how many days each week I want to stitch--I'm just going to track my activities.

I added more stitches to my counted cross stitch Christmas project.  This will ...

Racing to the end with 2............ from Exuberant Color

I started working early yesterday and got all of the top row blocks sewn.  I also have all of the 3.5" squares chosen for the bottom row.  I think I'm going to go ahead and sew this now and I'll add the bottom row to it when I get it finished.

I sewed the binding onto this small soft colorwash last night (only a portion of it is shown here).  I have had the quilting done for several weeks but couldn't decide which edge was the top and couldn't decide between a facing and a ...

#5 finish for December.................. from Exuberant Color

The binding is finished on I Spy 1 and now I just need to inspect it for any stray threads and then get it ready to be mailed.  This one ended up at 64" x 80.5".  The novelty print squares are 4" finished.

The backing is flannel that I bought at a year end sale 2 years ago.

The batting is Warm and Natural because I wanted a flatter quilt.  I didn't want rolling puffs through the novelty prints.

I found 4 more green Kaffe fabrics to use in the Rosy quilt.  The 2 on the left will ...

Christmas Cross Stitch and My Scarf in Progress from The Cozy Quilter

I finished off the centre snowflake and started the wreath above it this week in my Christmas cross stitch project.  This pattern is called "Invierno" from Satsuma Street. It is made up of nine motifs with a purple frame around each one.  I have a ways to go but this will be my relaxing slow stitching project over the next few weeks.  I will have it framed to hang up before next Christmas.

I've added several rows of knitting to my scarf.  I expect that it won't be done for this winter!  Good thing I have other scarves ...

Quilted..........and binding done........... from Exuberant Color

I Spy 2 is quilted.  I did straight line with the channel locks farther apart than normal.  With Warm and Natural the quilting doesn't need to be as close as with Hobbs 80/20.  I didn't want a lot of quilting lines going through the novelty prints.

I used the same medium tan thread that I used on the 2 flannel baby quilts.  No thread breaks or shredding on this quilt.

Then I finished the hand stitching on the batik star quilt.  I'll try to get it up on the double design wall for its photo.  It ...

'Tis the Season of Secret Projects from The Cozy Quilter

Last weekend, we went to visit our daughter and Finn.  On the way there and back, I hand stitched the binding on two quilts, the nautical themed comfort quilt I showed last week and this Whistlestop quilt.  I am very happy to have finished this quilt!  I have two more lap quilts pin basted, ready for quilting but they will have to wait until after the holidays for I am in the midst of making gifts that cannot be shown on my blog until after Christmas.

I did a bit of knitting most days this past week.  My scarf is ...

Backing for one.......... from Exuberant Color

The batting is now cut for both I Spy Quilts.  I decided on Warm and Natural because it is flatter and I don't want much puff in the quilting on these quilts.

I also located backing fabric for I Spy 2.  The boys it is for are under 2 years of age so they should like this backing for a long time.

I started the binding on the batik star quilt a few inches before a corner and with just a little stitching time yesterday I managed to get a few inches past the next corner so one short ...

Binding chosen............. from Exuberant Color

I searched one more time and found this beige with brown dots for the binding on the batik stars quilt.  Most of my batiks are 1/2 yard or less and I needed more that that so my choices were limited.  I like this one with the border and the backing fabric.

I started the hand finishing but won't have it all done for a few days.  I have other things I need to do first.  It's amazing what a difference the lighting makes since these are the same fabrics as in the photo above.  The real colors ...

My Second November Quilting Retreat from The Cozy Quilter

Christine and I attended the annual November Crafter's retreat at Camp Kintail this past weekend.  We both love these weekends away to get lots done on our current and new projects.  I just noticed that a lot of my projects are green in this post...  I made this I Spy HRT quilt top at the Oxford Guild retreat early in November and managed to get it quilted and bound at the retreat.  I finished off the hand stitching on the binding at home this week.

I found this fun green and white striped fabric in my stash for the ...

Working on the second quilt.......... from Exuberant Color

I got the binding cut and sewn on this second huge quilt, Blooming 9 Patch.  I have the first side finished by machine, stitching in the ditch next to the binding on the front to catch the flap of binding on the back.  It isn't perfect and I'm only showing you a good spot.  The binding and backing are the same so I don't think it is a major problem
Here are some of the prettier fabrics in the quilt.  I will work on the binding today and hopefully finish it.

We got about 2" of snow ...

18 inches to go............ from Exuberant Color

I wish I had more to report.  I hand stitched in 3 sessions, the last one being about 4 hours.  My eyes were giving out at 11 p.m. so I will finish it today.

The binding is the same fabric as the border, an old Hoffman batik.  The back is a Free Spirit wide sateen backing fabric.  Both have been easy to stitch through.

It was only in the low 30s yesterday and snow predicted starting in the wee hours of Sunday morning and continuing for several hours.  They are talking about 1 1/2" and above freezing temperatures ...

Still hand stitching.............. from Exuberant Color

I really didn't spend a lot of time hand stitching the binding yesterday.  I'm half done now so I hope today I will get it finished. Then I can trim the other quilt.

While taking a break from stitching I played on my smaller design wall with some of the 6.5" squares of Kaffe collective fabrics.  This is from the multicolor pile and I was just playing with what is available to come up with an idea.  I will NOT sew this.  I need to go to my larger double design wall in the basement and take ...

Binding started.............. from Exuberant Color

I got one of the huge quilts trimmed, binding cut and sewn on and hand stitching started.  I have one long side done.  This quilt was started way back around 2000 (or earlier) and was used as a sample in progress for many Trip Around the World classes that I taught.  I finished sewing it together at some point after I started this blog (July 4, 2007).

At the end of 2014 I sewed on the border and took this photo.  Now 9 years later it is quilted and close to being finished.  I'm not sure if I can ...

Oh Scrap! : Pieced Bindings from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

With all of the Compassion Quilts I have been making, I end up with a massive amount of scrap fabric from trimming the backing after they are quilted.

This past week, I spent quite a few days turning all of them into prepared bindings.

I have grouped them all by color and made a lot of pieced bindings.  Above are the ones I completed on Saturday.  Hopefully this will be the last of them for a bit.

I love having a big stash of prepared bindings.  This means once I get a quilt all quilted, I can immediately get a ...

October 2023 monthly recap................ from Exuberant Color

In October I had 2 finishes, both small....that's what happens some months.  On the left is Australian fabric zig zag which ended up at 34.5" x 45.5".  The colorwash is all batiks and is 31.5" square.

There were 4 tops finished and these 2 are the largest.  The African fabric and mottled batiks 16 patch with added batik blocks finished at 64" x 80".  I started this top in September and finished it in October.  On the right, the Bear Paw top is 69" x 84".  The blocks were made in 2021 and they waited ...

Binding............. from Exuberant Color

I didn't look any farther; I liked one of the binding choices in the first round.  I got it sewn on and have started the hand stitching.  The hanging sleeve is sewn on too.

This is the orientation of the other colorwash as I designed it.

When my daughter was here we tried it horizontally and thought maybe that was a better choice for art over a piece of furniture.

I put the leftover piece of backing fabric there to analyze whether it might be a good binding choice.

I flipped it 180 degrees to see if I like ...
