Sunday's stories from Not Afraid of Color

Sunday's story this week is autobiographical... the word prompts from Sunday's Whirligig are:
shelf, look, hole, end, cardboard, tube, turn, strange, patterns, pieces, wherever, will

Seems like she spends more time looking for things lately than doing things.

No she's not a hoarder, well not in the truest sense of the word, but having moved house, she felt lost. She had a tactile memory of where to find things in the old house, the kind of memory that builds up over time. Here was a different story. Even if she found a new place to put things ...

a writing prompt Balance from Not Afraid of Color

The word prompt from Sunday's Whirlagig this week

among, clouds, fight, bring, loss, leave, crowds, delight, tumult, waste, breath, balance

                          Finding Balance

She needed balance in her life. Balance between work and play, so today was for play. The skies were that Autumn blue and cloudless! A perfect contrast for the warm colors of turning leaves.

Oh but she loved Fall! The slight crispness to the air was invigorating. She wanted to be outside, and feel the changes coming. Changing seasons kept a person going, looking ahead,  bringing the next one, while still living in the present.

Humans were ...

writing prompt, A sliver of hope from Not Afraid of Color

my fiction of the week, prompted by Sunday Whirl

                                  A sliver of hope

A sliver of  light flashed in her eyes as she waited for the red line to take her home. When her train came to a stop, she waited for that group of people to take her place on the platform before squeezing into the car. She tucked her shiny gold chain into the collar of her dress to hide it from would-be thieves.

Her parents had warned her not to go into the city by herself, and were appalled that she was interviewing for a job there ...

A writing prompt, when you know... from Not Afraid of Color

The writing prompt is very romantic this week... by the poet Rumi

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from "Where did the handsome beloved go?" by Rumi: handsome, midnight, garden, rooftop, overflow, cypress, trembles, rose, search, mine, water, tell

The words inspire me, yet I seldom am able to use them all. This time I left out mine. I could force them in but the story is complete. I have a sensitive heart, so the words resonated with me. Romance is in the heart of the beholder, and often life is not as romantic but in fiction...

When you know...

Midnight ...

love has a heartbeat.... writing prompt for Sunday from Not Afraid of Color

Image result for holding a white gardenia
I thought I'd skip this week's writing prompt 'til I read these words. Like an idea for a painting or quilt, when the inspiration tickles your creativity it's hard to resist.
When that happens, don't resist...

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from "Counting" by Margarita Engle: white, jungle, record, parents, police, shanties, pretend, native, census, silver, confound, ditch

                                Love has a heartbeat

"this yard has become a jungle" she thought. Wasn't that long ago she planted a few bushes and perennials to hide the ditch beyond the fence. She thought it would look like a ...

integrity, inspiration, and another goodbye from Not Afraid of Color

Image result for john mccain young

Angie, at letting go the Bay leaf, posted this quote today with a powerful article about her trip to Aspen. (
It's a tweet  by Barack Obama

I respected and appreciated John McCain for his integrity and his concern for the citizens of our country. I did not vote for him but could have supported him if he had won. He put the needs of the citizens of America at the forefront of his life's work. He put himself in harms way to fight for his country.
He was able to withstand the onslaught of ...

another writing prompt... another story from Not Afraid of Color

The second writing prompt's words this week are:

Janet settled into her favorite reading spot at the library. She loved mysteries and stared at the shelves of new ones til she found her favorite author's latest. Hooray!

What a wonderful feeling to know you're in for a good ride!

She grabbed it as through someone would reach from behind her and snatch it from her before she got a chance to look inside! Then she scurried through the library to her favorite spot, sat down quickly and opened the book.

Oh yes, this looked like a good ...

Just Breathe A writing prompt from Not Afraid of Color

the words for today's writing prompt come from Sunday's whirligig.

It's a good way to stretch one's creativity, to let yourself imagine how to turn 12 words into a complete story. Sometimes I want to see how short a story can be to feel complete and compelling.

It's fun to read what others do with the words. Quilters do challenges to see what they can make with certain fabrics, it's all the same process. It gets you outside yourself a little.

Today's words are :

ripens, turns, walk, spine, horse, measure, cancer, belts, silver ...

a writing prompt... lessons from the sea from Not Afraid of Color

the writing prompt this week comes from (Sunday whirl)

                                   Lessons from the sea

She walked along the water's edge, hearing the soft swish of tide and feeling the soft sand squish around her toes as she moved. She smelled a whiff of coppertone and heard a gull call out they found a fry on the seashore. She felt clean air as it gently brushed over the little hairs on her arms.

Should she find shade from the sun, intense in the late afternoon. Intensifying as a child does just before bed, intense in the lower angle as it ...

writing prompt Her own history from Not Afraid of Color

THIS WEEK'S WORDS from sunday whirligig: apricots, hay, appear, beef, stone, carry, shoulders, piped, sensors, running, archaic, everything

                                         Her own history

The sun was warm on her shoulders as she walked through the hay fields. She remembered being here as a child, running through these fields with her friends, playing hide and seek.

What fun that was!
The thrill of getting caught by surprise... the slight excitement from the possibility of getting lost, wondering if a mouse would appear in her path.

The drying grass that would feed their animals that winter, smelled dusty, and scratched her arms as ...

Writing prompt In the quiet of an evening from Not Afraid of Color

The writing prompt this week is from Sunday Whirlagig and I used 8 of the 12 words.

hologram, touch, lips, crown, tundra, stand, lifelong, garden, sings, anyone, parking, close

In the quiet of an evening

She was walking through the park again, as she did at least once a day. Since moving to the big city she felt a strong need for nature to sooth her spirits.

Funny about this move, she had a lifelong need for wandering and seeing the next thing. She had wanderlust, said her mother who also said,  "happiness is in your own back yard"

Em ...

writing prompt July 8, 1918 "It's a start" from Not Afraid of Color

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from "A Short History of Silence" by Jane Yeh: bread, smile, promise, eaves, wrapper, rock, kiss, sleep, porch, candles, doorbell, braid

My offering this week:  a bit personal!
                                                                 IT'S A START

She was so very tired from decision making.

No one told her how hard it would be to unpack each box, find the things she had lived without for six months, and now decide where to put old things in new spaces.

She didn't know how to deal with the fact that she had paid  two sets of movers to move things ...

writing prompt... alligators and poodles from Not Afraid of Color

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from alligator, peeking, traits, happen, straight, spark, fizzle, silhouette, hobbits, silently, glide, signal

My offering:

                               Poodle Rituals
Every night it's the same thing.

About 8:30 PM my boy glides over to me silently, wagging his tail, looking so hopeful.

The tail wag, the hopeful look all signal it's time for an alligator.

Do something twice, and it's set in stone.

Milo, my puppy who's grown up in body but a baby in spirit, learned the word alligator quickly, since it's his favorite chew. Officially ...

Another Summer.... a writing prompt story from Not Afraid of Color

THIS WEEK'S WORDS  provided by sunday whirlagig come from "Five Chinese Verses" by Wendy Xu: toe, gate, glint, while, gaze, text, dimming, cooling, taste, sweltering, without, forward

 My offering is:

Another summer on the farm

She hadn't been to the farm in a whole year.

She still remembered the feel of the place though.
She started looking forward to it last month, while she was finishing up grade 6 and tired of learning.

She came nearly every summer as she grew up,  to visit her gran, to get out of the city and her mother's hair, to ...

writing prompt A chance to sparkle from Not Afraid of Color

The words above came from SundayWhirl writing prompt this week... here is my offering...

                                                  A chance to sparkle
This was her shot at the big time!

As far back as she remembered she wanted to act on Broadway, and here she was with a herd of other actors, waiting for their names to be called.

("stop fiddling with your hair" she heard her mom say in her head)

She could hardly catch her breath... she must not forget the words to the audition song. She feels so alone here in NY with her family all back in Minnesota. Should she ...

Breathe a writing prompt from Not Afraid of Color

The writing exercise for today comes from Sunday Whirl

She gathers her favorite writing pen, her notebook and a glass of cold tea flavored with orange peel, and goes out to the patio to do her weekly writing prompt. These have proven good for her imagination and skills. She is learning by doing.

It's a good thing.

Her dog Spirit is digging in the yard again. The years have dulled his hearing but he loves to dig in the earth, feeling the dirt beneath his paws.

She loves him to the moon and back, she forgives him for ...

Writing prompts... the lifeline from Not Afraid of Color

This Sunday's writing prompt from the Sunday Whirl
(the prompt from whirlagig follows that one! )

The words are

My first story is...

Blast it all! She forgot her phone! Racing back to the house, she hoped she had not missed the call.

Such an important call!

Crap! She dinged the car on that dang bicycle in the driveway, why couldn't her sister put that away?! She slammed open the front door, and raced into the house looking for her phone.

Aieee where was it? She ran around like a crazy person looking everywhere. She suspected ...

Two stories for you this week. Two prompts and two stories. Hope you enjoy them.

THIS WEEK'S WORDS  Prompts from  Sunday's Whirlagig

welter, quartz, bedside, pocket, moves, daughters, wipe, blossoming, trust, wisdom, shakes, pure

The best part of the day

Ah, she thought. A shower, a fresh pair of pj's and a good book, it was the best time of the day.

Warm light from her bedside table lamp, created a little pool of warmth. She had what she needed, a book, a glass of water, and comfort of a soft pillow. Ahh this was one of ...

Down in the Valley a writing prompt from Not Afraid of Color

Writing fills a part of me that painting, dancing and even sewing cannot reach.

These are the prompts for this week from

THIS WEEK'S WORDS come from "Hello, Baihua Mountain" by Bei Dao: guitar, patches, sign, valley, sunlight, slits, tale, distant, waterfall, drifted, hand, abyss

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading my words:

                                                                  Down in the Valley

He played the guitar like she made quilts... patches of sound would surface and she would become attached to them.
The rhythm or melody bits drifted into her hearing as she read or stitched ...

Birthdays a writing prompt from Not Afraid of Color

My writing prompt this week at Sunday's whirlagig is:

I will return to fiction writing when we settle down a bit. For now, these prompts are a release for me personally. Thank you for sharing my life. Your comments keep me from feeling so alone.

I read a book on writing once, that said, write write write ! all the words.
Write with abandon.
Then later, after you've  spent all the words needed, then put on your editors cap, and edit.
That's what I've learned to do. Write write write, and then re-read and edit.

What is ...
