Autumn Jubilee Wool Stitch Along Finish from From My Carolina Home

Did you get your wool applique done from part 1? When we left off, the motifs were stitched to the base. If you missed part 1 that has the pattern, click on Autumn Jubilee on the sidebar and go back a few posts.

Today we embellish and finish the needle keeper. Get out your stash of seed beads and other little lovelies, and add some bling to the project as you wish. For me, I put veins on the leaves with wool thread.

I did all the leaves, and left the acorns as they were.

Then I added just a ...

Autumn Jubilee Wool Stitch Along from From My Carolina Home

One thing in my hand sewing basket that I use a lot is my felt needle keeper. It was a party favor years ago at a quilt club Christmas party. It is getting a bit shabby, but is so useful, that I thought maybe it would be nice to make one in wool. So our Autumn Jubilee Wool stitch along will be a needle keeper, but you can use the motifs to do a little penny rug instead if you prefer. Start by cutting out the shapes from the pattern pdf below and matching them to the wool felt colors ...

We are so excited about The Academy of Appliqué next year that we can hardly wait! The joy of anticipating a week with stitching friends, old—perhaps we should say experienced—and new always fills us will delight, but this year promises to be something especially wonderful!

Last week, Kara shared two of the blocks we will be teaching in Williamsburg next year. In both sessions, we are offering choices for you, so that you can choose either option, or both. In our first session, we add the Butterfly and Trillium to the Cascading Creek—both blocks from our Woodland ...

Once Upon an Ornament from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Everyone loves a fairy tale. Most of us can probably name a favorite or two, which elicit memories from our childhood. These timeless tales have entertained and taught lessons to generations, and many have similar versions in cultures around the world. I (Teri) loved them as a child, read them to my children, taught them in my 4th and 5th grade classrooms, and now share them with my grandchildren. Our mutual love of these stories is one of the things that brought Kara and me together as designers, when we created our Fairy Tale Album. This set of Fairy Tale ...

"In the Garden" Again: Hydrangea from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

It has been a long time coming, but I (Kara) am finally stateside! We still don't have all our belongings yet, but all in due time. Since coming back, one of my favorite things has been wandering around my garden to see how it has fared in the last four years. One big surprise was one of my hydrangeas—it is huge! It is just starting to bloom and since it is right outside of our bedroom window, it is the first thing I see when I wake up.

This week's In the Garden block uses a bounty ...

Wool Applique from Humble Quilts

Lately I haven't had anything to pick up and work on in the evenings when I was home. This is an older project I started some time ago and am finally making my way back to it. I believe the backing is tobacco cloth. I feel like it does need a stabilizer since it is pretty limp. As I'm already halfway there I'll finish it as is. I know many people use SF101 to stabilize. Any thoughts on that?
This is a design by Maggie Bonanomi.

Another trek in the woods this weekend!

"In the Garden" Again: Hummingbird and Fuchsia from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Spring is waning and summer is near. Porches are bedecked with hanging flower pots brimming with blooms, and among my (Teri's) favorites is the fuchsia. Its colors are so vibrant and the design is magnificently detailed—a perfect companion to our little feathered friend, the hummingbird. You won't believe how fun it is to create these ribbon fuchsias, and they aren't as hard as they look like they'd be—promise! It feels a bit magical when you are gathering these petals.

As before, the printed pattern includes all the ribbon you need to create this block ...

"In the Garden" Again: Dragonfly and Fern from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

I (Kara) had always assumed that dragonflies were mostly found near water, until I was walking in the forest in Germany. There I saw them frequently as I was walking our two furry children, and those glimpses inspired this block. Though this block has only five wool pieces, the embroidery, embellishment, and threads take it from simple to elegant with just a few stitches. We hope you have fun stitching this block and this week only use the coupon code FERN10 for 10% off the printed pattern!

"In the Garden" Again: Robin and Forsythia from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

While I (Kara) was in Germany, the only robins I saw were the smaller English robins. They are adorable, and we have brought them to life in other blocks that we have created. The halfway point of our In the Garden re-visit brings us to the Robin and Forsythia block, but this time our robin is the larger, but equally beautiful American Robin. Simple stitches will bring this robin to life, and he will look like he is ready to fly away!

This week, you can use the coupon code ROBIN10 to receive a 10% discount on the printed Robin ...

"In the Garden" Again: Rose from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Both Kara and I (Teri) have June birthdays, so it is no surprise that we enjoy creating roses. You will see them in many of our designs—in fabric, ribbon, and embroidery. And thus, we knew we would dedicate a block In the Garden to our June flower, the Rose. We layered the petals and accentuated them with stitching and a sprinkle of beaded dewdrops. As you'll see, there are other ways to interpret the pattern. How will your rose bloom?

We love when stitchers make the patterns their own:
one student shared her dimensional rose, created with a ...
