Travelog: New Zealand Odyssey from With Strings Attached

New Zealand Odyssey: Indegenous Culture and Natural Beauty -- my 53rd Road Scholar trip!  Stevens and I began traveling with Elderhostel, as Road Scholar was then called, in 1996 when they changed the minimum age requirement.  My parents traveled with Elderhostel, too, so I'm second-generation.   Click on the tab at the top to see the entire list.

Friday, January 30/Saturday, January 31 [NZ time is 19 hours ahead of central time, so a day was lost in transit].

The most challenging part of the trip came at the beginning.   I got to ORD in plenty of time and the ...

Christmas in Key West from With Strings Attached

The Holidays in Key West:   my 52nd Road Scholar program!   We began traveling with Elderhostel in 1996 when they changed the age requirement.  My parents traveled with EH, too, so I'm second-generation.   Click on the tab to see the entire list.

When Stevens was a parish pastor he worked on Christmas, of course, so for all those years we didn't travel during the holidays. When he retired we realized that we could, and in 2013 we went to Quebec  with Road Scholar.  Key West was next on the list but we didn't get around to it (the ...

The Best of Italy: Rome, Florence, Venice from With Strings Attached

I had a wonderful time on The Best of Italy tour.  It was my 51st program with Road Scholar.  Click on the tab to see the entire list. We've met several RS 'centenarians' over the years and one man who'd been on 150+.  My parents went on a dozen Elderhostels (as it was then known) so I am second generation.

Saturday, October 11:   overnight flight from O'Hare to Rome.

Sunday, October 12:  Seven of our 19-person group arrived around the same time (one on my flight, the others on different flights). The Road Scholar driver took us ...

Vermont and New Hampshire: family, friends, and memories old and new from With Strings Attached

I was in northern New England last week for Stevens' committal and some most-welcome vacation,  This post is chronological rather than thematic because that's how I remember it.   The company of family and friends, museums and historic sites, trails to wander, and quilt shops with sunshine and blue skies all added up to a wonderful trip.

Thursday, August 21:  Coming in to Burlington. Green mountains!

I was Betty Woods’ guest for supper on Thursday. (“We have supper at 5:00,” she told me when I called earlier in the week. “Dinner is at noon.”) Betty is 95. Her husband ...

Road Scholar: the Best of London and Paris from With Strings Attached

I love to travel but, as many of you know, my husband is no longer able to join me.  Based on the success of my trip to San Diego in June (ALA conference) when he had a 24/7 caregiver, I signed up for the Best of London and Paris with Road Scholar. They offered single travelers the double rate with the understanding that if there was another single we would be roommates.  We again engaged a 24/7 caregiver.

This was my 49th trip with Road Scholar. That includes a number of one-day trips that they offered for a ...

Quilt shops along the way from With Strings Attached

There were quilt shops!   Yes, dear readers, I indulged.

I didn't have any particular fabrics in mind (too soon for the Quiltville  mystery colors). I stuck to the sales shelves and got some colorful bargains.

Shipshewana, Indiana:   Yoder's Department Store.  We only had a few minutes so I went to the quilt shop just inside the entry of the Yoder's "mall."  All brights and batiks. I bought four half-yard pieces.  Only later did I learn that inside the Yoder's store itself there's an entire fabric department.  I will just have to go back.

Williamstown, Massachusetts ...

Libraries along the way from With Strings Attached

Nearly every town in the northeast has a public library.  I shared photos of two in earlier posts (Mentor, OH, and St. Johnsbury, VT.)

Top left:  Merrill Library, Rumney, NH.  Center:  Smith Library, Chautauqua.  Top right: Nichols Library, Center Harbor, NH.  Bottom left:  Tenney Memorial Library, Newfane, VT. Center: Angelica Free Library, Angelica, NY.  Center right:  Fairlee PL, Vermont.   Bottom center:  McIndoe Falls, Vermont (built 1853 as McIndoe Falls Academy; now also houses the post office).  Bottom right: Whiting, VT.

There's a charming one-room seasonal library at Joe's Pond, west of Danville, VT.  (Danville has a year-round library ...

Travelog, part 6: another museum and apples from With Strings Attached

Sunday:   We left Center Harbor mid-morning and headed 68 miles south to Manchester. (Everything is so close in New Hampshire!)

I’ve been to a number of exhibits that include art on loan from the Currier. Today we got to see the museum itself.

In addition to the permanent collection right now they are hosting a spectacular collection of Islamic/Asian rugs from the St. Louis Museum of Art. Several are 500 yrs old.

This is contemporary.  See what happens when the colors run? LOL.

Currier, part 2:   the permanent collection is wide-ranging.  Tomi de Paola and much more—Picasso ...

Travelog 2021, part 2: Road Scholar at Chautauqua from With Strings Attached

This was our 39th Road Scholar program (47th if we count the one-day "day of discovery" field trips).  We began traveling with Road Scholar in 1996 right after they eliminated the age requirement.  We like the combination of learning and sight-seeing, the value for our money, and the interesting fellow travelers.  Click on the link in the blog header to see the complete list of our RS adventures.

Road Scholar holds weeklong programs at the Chautauqua Institution in spring and fall -- before the actual Chatauqua season.  They also have a programs during the season when it's a lot more ...

Travelog 2021, part 1: Cuyahoga Valley and a president from With Strings Attached

18 days, 8 states, 3010 miles.  Our October trip -- the farthest I've been away from home since February, 2020, and even longer for Stevens -- was a memorable success.  We accomplished three goals and did so much more.  The travelog will be presented in multiple parts.

We left home Friday morning, October 9, headed for Richfield, OH, just south of Cleveland.

Saturday morning:   All aboard! Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad tour to start our day.

From the website:  CVSR is  a tourist excursion railway and private sector, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization operating in partnership with Cuyahoga Valley National Park. CVSR ...
