Here Comes Christmas from Cat Patches

2020 has seemed exceedingly long, while also impossibly short. Here we are just a little over a month from the end of the year, and it seems as if the year has gone by without really being lived. Certainly a lot have died. One can only hope this will all end before we find ourselves at this date next year. I was thinking about all we have to be thankful for in 2020. When I consider where we were last January, I feel a little as if we were in a blissful state of naivete.

Time Traveling, and a Winner! from ... Cat Patches

My sincere appreciation goes to all of you who stopped by and left comments, emailed, or in some other way expressed your thoughts and good wishes for my 10th Blogiversary. It's been wonderful hearing from so many of you who don't ordinarily comment. I know you're out there lurking because I'm something of a lurker myself, but it's been nice to get a bit of a head count. And to those of you who write every day...thank you for your friendship. You've all been so sweet with your kind words.

Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries from ... Cat Patches

Hey there! How are ya'? We're back, and I've missed you guys! Did you ever take a vacation, and then, when you come back to work, you wonder why you took a vacation because there's so much work to do? Well, I have, and that's kind of how I'm feeling as I sit here. But the past week was hardly a vacation. Since retirement for both of us, pretty much every day is a vacation...except grocery shopping days. But that's another blog post. Here's the news you've been waiting on tenterhooks ...

Caliente, Nevada from ... Cat Patches

We had just over 200 miles on our drive from Pahrump to Caliente yesterday. We passed through all different kinds of terrain. Our route took us south, around the southern end of Las Vegas, and then north again.

We passed by a very large solar array, possibly the largest we've ever seen. You can see it as a black band near the middle of the image below.

And when you travel with an engineer, it's important to know all the specifications about something like this. So we consulted our friend, The Google, and found the "project summary," right ...

A River Walk and a Death Valley Ghost Town from Cat Patches

We got out for a nice little walk yesterday. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, there is a very nice community resource here in the Colorado River Heritage Greenway Park and Trails. Our first stop was to be Davis Dam, where we expected a short "overlook" hike.

We could see there was a barrier on the road, and we already knew it was no longer possible to drive across the dam, and so we parked the truck and walked from here.

This is an award-winning bridge, so show a little respect.

And please follow the dam rules.

Abandoned Mines and Ghost Towns from ... Cat Patches

We took a drive out toward the Northeast side of the park yesterday. There were a couple of hikes there we wanted to check out. The first we came to was the Keane Wonder Mine. It required driving out three miles of dirt road. Mike was very brave this time. I took more pictures than this one, but it will give you the "big picture" of what the place looked like. When we get back to internet access civilization, I'll tell you more about it and post some more pictures. For now, be careful here because I haven't ...

What's Old is New Again from ... Cat Patches

Good morning, my friends. I'm writing to you from the stone-age where nothing electronic works any more. We spent some time yesterday experimenting, but cannot seem to bring our cell signal up to a level for anything more useful than receiving text messages. Mike has an idea that our phones might be the problem. When we switched service, we opted to keep our old AT&T phones. We hoped they would be compatible with Verizon's system, and so far, they have been. Here in Death Valley, however, we might have exceeded our limits. It's hard to say ...
