Sunday Quilt Inspiration: college memories from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Having just spent most of my week with a bunch of teenagers who all plan to attend a college, I thought it might be a nice idea to take a look at some of the college memory quilts that are on Pinterest.

An LSU commissioned quilt for a retiree from her coworkers.
I've made a couple, one LSU and one SLU, which are the first ones on this list. Everything else is just sort of randomly selected and not necessarily on my boards.

Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories: SLU Tee-shirt Quilt

Other, randomly selected, college tee-shirt quilts...
I like the mismatched pattern and border around the edges. Also like the black border between shirts and square edge pattern

I am going to do this with all my High School Sports shirts....Neat Idea! T-Shirt QuiltTshirt quilt tutorials!!! I started mine (Mizzou, too, how funny!) a long time ago, but was only going to sew shirt squares together... I'm SO glad I kept my scraps, because this one looks SO much cooler!! I can't wait to get working on it! :D

LSU Memories ~~ a finish! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

A finish! Wait, a quilt finish! I've actually finished a quilt. This one is a memory quilt made of tee shirts from LSU. Purple and gold again!

This quilt is to be a gift. A former client returned to request that I make another. I guess I couldn't resist that compliment because I happily took the job.

I can't seem to just do the easy thing. I have to try something different every time I make a quilt. With this one, I decided to give color blocking a run. Some of the tees had designs on both ...

Life's little things from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Do you have those days when it seems that you haven't accomplished much, but a look back makes a few small discoveries?

I've had weeks of those kinds of days. I really felt that I had not accomplished anything of worth lately. Then I drove Richard's mom to a wake. As we were talking, I mentioned my feelings of wasted time, and she began a list my recent doings.

She and my father-in-law belong at the top of the list. I don't do enough for them, but I do try to help. They truly enjoy ...

Summer sewing from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

What summer sewing have you been up to? A bit of quilting or something less hot? Here in Louisiana the temps and humidity are so high that I've been focusing on smaller items. Most of those have been for the grands, but I did get out a pattern and sewed up a top for myself.
It's not exactly my style, but then it's not a regular tee. I really like loose, soft tee shirts. I had to dress up in heels and dressy clothes enough while teaching that I want to wear light, loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. Right ...

Another Memory Quilt ~~ finished! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Memory quilts seem to be the most requested commissions I get. I'm a little tired of them, but this particular quilt is really special because I've done work for this mom before. She brought this one to me in the fall, so I pushed it back a few times to get other quilts done.

This little family has seen a few changes: mom got remarried and had a baby. An older brother started college. Another is graduating in May. And somewhere between this graduate and the baby, there's another boy. So mom was not shy about ...

Memory Tee-shirt Top ~~ Finished! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Last week I told you that Richard gave me a hand cutting tee shirts for a memory quilt for a client who had purchased one for her older son a couple of years ago. That help really paid of: I was able to begin sewing blocks together and got a couple of strips made, although they were far from working together. But I have to start somewhere.

I made a few more seams yesterday and got this far with the top. One of my problems was that I had way too many shirts. So I spent some time trying to ...

Not getting very far from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I started a new memory quilt with tee shirts from a former client. She came to me a couple of years ago and liked her oldest son's quilt so much that she contacted me again. Honestly, if it weren't that she's such a sweet little momma, I'd have declined.

How can I possibly say no to someone who opens the conversation with, "We love the quilt so much that we want another for the second son"? Wait, you like it that much?

Well anyway, these shirts are boys' athletic shirts, which are really difficult to work ...

Harley Davidson ~~ finish! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

The Harley Davidson memory quilt is complete! Binding and label done and dusted! The only thing left to do is to deliver it to the client. There were 30 or so tee shirts in the container, and I tried to use at least a small part from all of them. On many both the front and back had nice designs, so I sewed them together and created one panel. It was helpful in creating the puzzle design that the couple wanted.

We were barbecuing on Monday when I finished the binding, so I  asked a couple of the kids to ...

Harley Davidson Memory Quilt ~~ Quilting Finish from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

And so the Harley Davidson memory quilt is quilted. I still need to sew on the binding, but if all goes well, that will happen tomorrow. I was thinking that I’d use the charcoal Kona for binding, but tonight I’m thinking that a black Kona would be a better idea. Harley Davidson colors are orange and black but I like the frame of a black binding.

I took these pictures very quickly after I pulled the quilt off the long-arm and trimmed the rough edges off. So typical of the way I do things, I misjudged the amount ...

Killing Time and Ballet on Pointe from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I finished the Harley Davidson quilt top last week but didn't have the backing fabric that I wanted. While I had a few days of down time, I decided to sew some blue scraps together to make some small blocks. The blue bucket was spilling over. It's not that bad now, but it sure seems that I didn't reduce the volume by much.

I have a new set of rulers that we bought about a month ago. I wanted a 15" square ruler to make cutting tee shirts easier, but the set of four was cheap enough ...

Harley Davidson memories ~~ finished top from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I've been working on this customer quilt top for several days now. The customer's husband must have been a Harley Davidson fan for quite some time now. His HD tee shirts come from all over the United States.

I haven't counted the number of shirts that I used in the quilt, but it's quite a few. Some of the shirts have interesting fronts and backs, so I tried to keep those together, but I didn't worry about which side I attached on top. It was enough to keep them together.

Since my customer wanted me ...

Flowers, parks and shirts, Oh My Some Finishes! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I've been busy writing segments for my Write 31 Days series, which is now complete. There aren't as many as I'd hoped, but I'm happy with the articles I did churn out. You can find links to all 16 posts on the introductory piece here.

I managed to do a few other things in between the writing and the sewing. One of the more important things was delivering flowers to the cemeteries where family members are buried. My great-grandparents and grandparents (on my mother's side) are all buried in Moreauville. It's about 30 miles ...

Friend Finishes ~~ Tees and more from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I told you here that I'd been helping a friend whose wrist is pinned together and in a cast. She fell and broke it pretty badly, so she won't be sewing monogrammed tee shirts for a while. But she had a nice little thing going, so I'm being a good friend by helping when I can. I took a few days to get another order of tee shirts sewn up so she could get them to NSU this weekend.

There were several tees and four of these pull-overs. This stuff is thin and slick, so yeah, hard ...

Pin It Weekly #217 from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I have a wonderful friend who sews Greek letters onto tee shirts, blankets and other items for college students in fraternity and sorority organizations. Long story short, she broke her arm. Sewing is almost impossible until she has surgery and a hard cast. Guess who got a call!

Are we surprised? No! And what do you do when your friend is crying on the phone while in the ER? I mean, come on. I had to help out. The picture above is of the two tee shirts and the one below of the three blankets.

I've helped her in ...

Derrick's Memories ~~ refinished from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

You know how the customer's always right? I was raised on a farm that sold vegetables at the local farmers' market. Daddy never argued with a customer. If someone wanted to return something a week later, he took it back and agreed to either replace the item or return the money. Even when the customer was wrong, the customer was right.

It's a good thing that I learned his lesson. A recent customer asked for a custom quilted memory quilt. I specialize in creating interactive or three-dimensional quilts, so I assumed that is what she wanted. When I ...

Derrick's Memories ~~ finished! from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Yes, finally! This tee-shirt memory quilt is a big one. The biggest I've made, I'm sure. Mom is an acquaintance who saved her only son's athletic shirts for all of his games, and apparently there were many, many games. This young man played soccer, football, basketball, karate and baseball. There were well over 40 shirts but we cut that down to about 35 because who needs a California king tee-shirt quilt?

I used his last football jersey and his karate uniform as 3D designs. The karate shirt opens to show the logo on the back. I had ...

How to start a quilt (in the midst of a mess) from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

There are two kinds of quilters: those who have every tool and scrap of fabric organized and put away, and those who haven't a clue what she has, where it is, or how to find it.

Can you guess which one I am? If you said clean, organized, and put together, you'd be right.

Unless you came for a visit right now. Or last month. Or maybe for the next couple of months. There are so many things "stored" in my studio, that I now have to walk through a pathway to get from one door to the ...
