To no one's surprise we awakened to snow on Sunday morning, right on schedule and as forecast! A few hearty souls braved the elements to attend worship; all told, we ended up with about 4 inches before it turned over to sleet. Today we have crusty, icy snow remaining, the roads and driveway are still a mess. We've been warm and dry at home, I finished a book yesterday (will report on this month's

The snow was still falling as I took some photos, and it continued falling on and off all day. Big fat flakes alternated with tiny ones. It was freezing cold, and we hunkered down with the fireplace going and watched football games all day. Juncos were on the ground looking for anything falling out of the bird feeder, so My Sweet Babboo scattered some seed on the snow for them. They devoured the offering ...
read moreOK -- today is going to be just about snow! We had a massive snowstorm yesterday and went from Winter watch to Heavy snowfall to Blizzard warnings on the weather app. Oh my -- whatever did we do before we had the weather app? OH -- we looked out the window or went outside to check the conditions!
I was optimistic when I woke up and saw the snow, but after about one hour, I realized that the snow was coming down hard and fast, and there was NO way we were going to hit the roads. Heck -- it took hours and hours ...
read moreThis is what happens when snow is predicted in the south; naturally there's the insanity that occurs as everyone runs for bread and milk at the grocery stores but, then, the conversation turns to anticipated snowfall amounts and, ultimately, how long folks expect to be stranded. I'm not too worried: we have firewood enough to last and I have an adequate supply of books and stitching projects

Seriously, is this one of the most hilarious things ever? Merlin is SO clever! So Merlin, in addition to all of his other amusing and endearing characteristics, also plays fetch. He may be small, but he’s fierce! In the morning, but occasionally in the evening as well, he will bring me his “cork,” which is… Continue reading Merlin Plays Fetch & Other Breaking News

But then I looked at the weather and it said with the wind chill it felt more like about 20 degrees and I thought better of it. read moreTwo fun things in one weekend, we got a couple of inches of snow on Friday, just in time to hunker down for Wild Card Weekend. Before the snow came, a new visitor came to sample the handouts. Apparently, Oliver has a buddy. The second little guy has been here before, but not as consistently as Oliver. I can only tell them apart by where they choose to eat their treats. I know it isn’t Jack, as he always goes to the other side of the house to munch down his tidbit.
The new, yet unnamed, furry friend took ...

I was six years old living in Greensboro, when my parents decided to stay with some friends over Christmas. They didn’t live far, but apparently a blizzard was on the way, and they wanted to have us all together on Christmas day. So we went to spend the night on Christmas eve with them. Their home was a split level house, typical of North Carolina homes of the era, with a circular staircase hidden behind a closet door on the second ...
read moreIn the garden this month, there has been an interesting contrast of dull days and bright color, sunny mornings and then snow followed by days of rain. Just the day before our QOV sew day, it snowed. As I watched the snow fall, it seemed that every bird in the neighborhood needed a bit of extra fuel to deal with the cold.
Fat flakes came down all morning.
