Foolish Formatting from ... Cat Patches

Well, I have to start out today's post with an apology. When I took the pictures off my camera just now, I was waiting for the appearance of a cute picture of Mike and Smitty watching TikTok videos together. Only then I realized I'd formatted my memory card after I'd taken the picture. Duh. I usually format the card every time I take pictures off the camera. I've had problems with the card becoming corrupted if the pictures are simply "deleted," and so I'm in the habit of formatting. So I did my slow stitching ...

Busy Bee from ... Cat Patches

We're winding down to the last day before we take off on a short camping trip to the beach. Originally, we were making this trip to have dinner at a restaurant we like in Cannon Beach, called EVOO. We made the reservations when things were looking up, virus-wise. Then we got nervous about indoor venues and canceled our reservations. No matter. No reason not to make the trip anyway. Camping is naturally socially distant, and we were able to get a reservation at one of the Oregon state parks. So we're going.

Bind On from Cat Patches

It was another busy day here yesterday. There was a little of everything to do, I think. I started out by processing the beets. My yield was 5 pints of pretty pickled beets.

That's probably enough to see us through the year, but I'll probably make more before I'm finished.

After that, I went to work on my slow-stitching. When I finished for the morning, I decided I'd stitched enough to move my hoop to the next position.

I was a little worn out stitching all those straight lines for the barn, and so I decided ...

Dead Zone from ... Cat Patches

If my writing seems lackluster today, it's because I'm sorely lacking in luster. My night of sleep ended sometime during the 3:00 hour. I'd go back to bed, but I have an appointment for a pedicure this morning, and so any napping will need to wait. Usually, I have no trouble sleeping, but occasionally, I wake up too early and can't turn off my mind from the coming day's activities. Oh well. Before I came upstairs to write this post, I tucked Sadie in like the little baby she is. She loves snuggling in ...

Hot Stuff from Cat Patches

Yesterday, we turned on the air-conditioner for the first time this summer. It's always a question whether it will work when we turn it on the first time. So far, so good. It's the original air-conditioner that was here when we moved in 18 years ago. There's no telling how long it was here before us. We turned it on when we left to go grocery shopping. When we came home, the house was cool and comfy. Mike thought to close the vents in the basement, and that kept the sewing room from turning into a deep ...

Happy Fourth! from Cat Patches

It's hard to feel very celebratory on this, our American Independence Day. Recently I read a book by David McCullough, entitled 1776, all about the Revolutionary War and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The challenges and near-miraculous victory of the colonists was very inspiring. Our country is in dire straits right now, and the pandemic is only one item on our list of woes. Still, I continue to feel optimistic that there are better days ahead. And so when I went looking for an image to mark the day, I settled on this one with the superimposed ...

Cheery for Cherries from Cat Patches

All this talk of cherries ripening had me going. I got a bee in my bonnet first thing yesterday to try adapting my mother's cherry cobbler recipe into a dessert for two. Her cherry cobbler was probably my favorite dessert growing up, and I was smart enough to get her recipe before she passed away in 1997. It made enough cobbler to feed a small army. It was baked in a 13 x 9 inch baking pan. I made it just once for a potluck, and it was as delicious as I remembered it. But sheesh...such a big ...

A Finished Flimsy from ... Cat Patches

It was a mostly sewing day yesterday, and I surprised myself by finishing up the Fancy Cats quilt top. The first step was to sew the component parts into rows.

And then to sew the rows together into the quilt center.

It was about that time Inspector Smitty showed up. He was only partly interested in the quilt. Mainly, he was wondering what happened to the open-door policy. I'd been sewing for a while, and so it seemed like a good time to take a break and see what was happening outside.

The first thing I noticed were these ...

Making Progress from Cat Patches

Yesterday morning, I made sure to leave myself plenty of time to slow-stitching. It relaxes me, and I had a busy day ahead driving to the other side of our hill to get my hair cut. There is more traffic and more people on that side of town, and so it is more tiresome than when I make a quick trip into "The Berg," which is our name for our little town.

I'm back to working on the big stitch hand quilting for Mulligan Stew.

When I put this aside last time, I was so tired of working on ...

One More Mask from Cat Patches

Summer's here! Summer solstice will reach our part of the world at 2:43 p.m. today, and we are so ready. We have a couple of dinners planned with family already, and a couple of camping trips to see us through the season. Now we're outfitted with masks, and we're ready to get on board.

Most of the day was spent in the kitchen yesterday. We knew it was going to be a warm day, and our plan was to eat our dinner outside. So I made up some gazpacho. This is my own recipe, and ...
