Rail Fence Finish #11 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Can you believe that there are still some Rail Fence quilts to be completed?

For this quilt, I just alternated the direction of the blocks.

I still had quite a few blocks left and this layout requires the most blocks - 168 to be exact.

These patchwork quilts really are inviting when completed.  I thought about adding a border on one of these but I am pretty much out of brown fabric in my stash! Yay!
(And I need to keep in mind I need backings for future quilts.)

I was able to use two large cuts for the backing - both ...

Rail Fence #10 and 1st CIL Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am doubling up on the finishes today!

First up is the tenth finish using the rail fence blocks.

In my last post regarding these quilts, I shared that someone had included a great light-colored fabric in with their blocks.  I used half of the fabric for the horizontal sashing on the first quilt and now the rest has been used as the sashing between these blocks.

I can't believe we are now in double digit finishes with these blocks.  And I still have a few more to finish up.  I will provide an overview of how many blocks ...

Rail Fence Finishes 8 and 9 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Yep!  I have more Compassion Quilts to share this week.  These two finishes are all made with blocks donated by some of you.  Can you believe we are already up to 9 finished quilts?!

I found another yard cut of a light tan solid in my stash so I made another "boston commons" layout.

One yard is just enough to cut the strips needed at 3"and have enough left over for the binding.

Do you see your blocks?

I was a bit worried the slid was a bit drab to go with the blocks but I think it still ...

Rail Fence Finish 6 and 7 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Slowly getting the bindings sewn onto the Compassion quilts.

I have two more to share with you today!

In my attempt to try and make these look a little different, I sewed some blocks into fours and then added some sashing and cornerstones.

I think most of the blocks in this quilt came from one person.  They had a lot of very similar blocks so I was able to join those together.  I then had to select other blocks to finish out the quilt. I chose blocks with a light fabric on the edge so there was nice contrast to ...

Compassion Quilts Block Drive Schedule from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Quite a few of you have asked me if I will be doing more block drives for the Compassion Quilts I am currently working on.

The answer is YES!

My plan is to do four block drives a year.  They will be announced in March, June, September and December.   Each March will be the month that we will be making quilts for our veterans.  And once a year we will focus on blocks for kids - I am thinking that will be in September.

The current block drive is these cute blue/brown rail fence blocks made from 1.5" wide ...

Rail Fence Quilt Number 4 and 5 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

First, I want to thank everyone who has sent in blocks - my mailbox is stuffed every day!

Second, I want to let you know that I have decided to just call these quilts that will be donated to my local hospital Compassion Quilts.  I think that sounds so much better!

Today I have two more rail fence finishes to share.

The first one is a lovely version with just the blocks alternating in direction.  Do you see your blocks?

Here is another view of all those pretty blocks.

I really love this layout.

This quilt measures 50 x 60

Rail Fence Quilt Number 2 and 3 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have realized I am going to have a lot of finishes to share each month so I thought I would start sharing my hospital project finishes mid-week.  It has been a flurry of activity this week!

Rail Fence finish number two is one of my favorite layouts to make.  I call it a ripple effect where you start in the middle and then each section of blocks is framed with a solid.

I think most of the blocks used to make this quilt were donated by 3 or 4 people.

I see some of mine in there too!

On ...

Rail Fence Quilt Number One from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Here it is...The first of the quilts made for the hospital using the rail fence blocks!

Let me say first, that one of the objectives in making these donation quilts is I really wanted to use up some of my older fabric. So I started out with designs that needed some of the brown fabrics I have in my stash.

The rail fence blocks in this first quilt were all made out of my stash.  I decided to make just a horizontal design using blocks and an older rusty leaf fabric I had that I knew I would never ...

Preparations from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am blown away by how many of you have contacted me to say they made blocks for my donation quilt project.  The blocks are now coming in daily and I am sorting them into little stacks for future designs.  I have already made one quilt (that I hope to share on Friday) and the second top is just about complete.

My goal was to make about 6 quilts with these blocks but I think there are going to be far more!  Thanks so much!!

I am so glad I took advantage of Connecting Threads recent sale and bought some ...

Oh Scrap! : This, That, Those from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week seemed to fly by so fast.  I feel like I should have a lot more to show for it - but this is all the scrap sewing I did.

I made this single 16 patch block for a future donation quilt.

I started sewing together the rows on this scrap quilt.  I still have two partial blocks I need to finish but the blocks are big so the rest of the quilt should go together quickly.

The first of the rail fence blocks are starting to arrive in my mailbox.  I am so thankful for the response I have ...

Oh Scrap! : Something to keep me Busy from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

A few weeks back, I mentioned that I have been organizing a little something behind the scenes and that I would be sharing it soon.  I keep running into a few obstacles, but I think I am going to go ahead and let you know what I am up to.

Since the start of the pandemic, I have been evaluating what is important to me and what I want to focus on in the future.  I am working less on my "day job" so how do I want to fill my spare time.  That is why I decided to finally ...

Oh Scrap! : Two New Starts from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I keep finding tempting scraps in my sewing room and before you know it, I started another quilt.

My brown and blue scrap bins were overflowing with skinny strings so I decided to make these cute little rail fence blocks.  Sorry the color in the photo is so bad....what can I say, I do most of my sewing at night.  I will be sharing more about this project soon.  It is pretty exciting news and I can't wait to share it.

I already have about 35 blocks completed.
They measure 5.5" square and are made from 1 ...

Churn Dash Block Using Fat Quarters from Quiltnotes All Blogs

The churn dash quilt block is an old favorite. It's a 9-patch block, meaning there are 9 units of construction. There are four half square triangle units, four rail fence units and one plain block unit. In this article you will learn how to piece a 12" finished churn dash quilt block. Look at the end of this article for other finished block sizes. There is a link to instructions to make a Churn Dash Quilt approximately 66" x 80" finished. For these instructions you can use scraps or two fat quarters of contrasting fabrics. Two fat quarters will ...

Caterpillar in My Curry from Sew Preeti Quilts

The fear of an unfinished object is real.  It is not that the UFO will physically attack me but the passive aggressive nature of the silent taunts can be pretty traumatic.

A new finish

Therefore the leftover strip sets from "Playing with Fire" had to be quickly repurposed.

Repurposing Leftover Strips

Paul: Very Halloween
Me: I am calling it Caterpillar in my Curry
Paul: WHAT!!!
Me: If you can have a wasp in your hat then why can I not have a caterpillar in my curry?
Paul: You mean "a bee in your bonnet"?
Me: Yup, that's what I ...

A 2020 RSC Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The end of 2020 is still a long way away, but I decided to go ahead and finish up one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.  Once I get the bulk of the blocks finished, I just can't restrain myself from finishing it up.  Not when it means crossing one off my list!

I am not sure if this block has a name.  It is just a rail fence block variation.  Each of the strips are cut at 2" x 6.5" and sewed together to create a darker pinwheel look in the center.
The bloc finishes up at ...

Oh Scrap! : Rail Fence Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

We all knew purple was going to be the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color for August - simply because I made purple blocks last month!  Ha!!

But that is okay with me - when I had my browns out for my recent brown scrap quilt, I went ahead and cut the strips for a couple rail fence blocks.

Then I went ahead and made some yellow blocks.

A quick count of my blocks revealed I needed just two more blocks for my quilt so I snuck in a few black scraps.

One thing I have learned from the RSC is that these rainbow ...

Oh Scrap! : Nope from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I so appreciate the work Angela over at SoScrappy does to keep the Rainbow Scrap Challenge going.  But there are sometimes when her ideas and my ideas clash.  Spending a third month on the color blue just doesn't work with my scraps.  So I am going to take a sideways step on the colorwheel and just pretend that the RSC color for July is purple!

In the few days of July, I have already finished my three blocks for my rail fence variation quilt.  I need just seven more blocks - I am going to go with three gold, two ...

Oh Scrap! : Just Two from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

After I finished my pink string blocks for this quilt, I started cutting the strips for one of my 2020 Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.

For past colors, I have been making three blocks.
But I decided just to make two this month in pink.

I realized my quilt is already getting quite big.  I still want to add yellow, purple and maybe a bit of brown and gray.  And I only need ten more blocks to finish my quilt.

It is hard to believe we are over halfway done already with our RSC quilts!

What scrappy things have you been ...

Oh Scrap! : This and That from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The weather here has been sunny and warm so not a lot of sewing happened this week.  I did make a bit of progress on a couple of scrap quilts however.

I made my three dark green RSC blocks for my rail fence variation quilt.
I don't really like how these blocks turned out...

But once they get placed with the other colors, they look just fine.  I think it is just my aversion to green that brings out my dislike.  I think this quilt just needs some yellow pink and purple.

I also made some progress on my ...

Oh Scrap! : Blue from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Between garden cleanup and mask preparation, I didn't get a lot of scraps sewn this week.

But I did cut and sew some blue scraps for one of my RSC quilts.
These three blocks bring my total up to 15 so I am now at the halfway point.  I must have started this project last year for me to have so many.  But I have 5 colors completed!

What I really should be working on is finishing old UFOs.  I haven't touched a single one since I have been sheltered at home.

What type of projects are you ...
