Sewn together............... from Exuberant Color

Several people agreed with me yesterday in the comments that this was the perfect border for this Bear Paw quilt.  It is one of my favorite older Hoffman batiks.  I decided to just go ahead and cut the border pieces and sew them on.  It is 54" x 69".

I also cut and pressed a backing for a Marcia Derse fabric baby quilt top that I made in August so I will find batting for it today.

Sashing and cornerstones........... from Exuberant Color

The Bear Paw top is sewn together so now it is time to audition for border fabric.  This is the first piece I pulled out and I like it so I'm not sure how many more fabrics I will try.  Click to see a larger photo.  I really need to prepare something for machine quilting so that is today's project.

Sashing cut............. from Exuberant Color

I cut 11 strips into 3 sashing strips each and put them up on the design wall with the Bear Paw blocks.  One of them is almost too light so I may find another strip to substitute.

Then I added 2 different fabrics as cornerstones below the first and second rows.  The top one is a beige print and the one below it is a peach color.

They are about the same value but the peach color is brighter and might be the better choice.

I got another birthday package in the mail yesterday from a CO friend.  She said ...

12th block sewn.......... from Exuberant Color

Number 12 is sewn and unless I decide I want to replace any of the first 11, I am done making the Bear Paw blocks.

One paw close up.

I don't know if this is the final layout.  I will analyze this for a couple days.

The bottom of the photo isn't as well lit so the blocks down there aren't as dark as they look here.

I went to W*lm*rt 2 days ago but they didn't have any frozen blueberries so I stopped again yesterday afternoon and I found this beautiful cactus.

I ...

11 blocks............ from Exuberant Color

I did lots of cutting yesterday morning, more than I need for this quilt.  I can't believe I got 2 pieces of the same fabric next to each other on this block. It is going to stay and won't be noticed when all of the blocks are together in the quilt.

This is block number 11.  I have to decide how big this quilt is going to be.  We all know we can go on and on and make lots of blocks and make big quilts but really what I need right now are throw size, for the ...

Many rows later.............. from Exuberant Color

I think I said this quilt will be 72" x 90" so the seams are long.  I finished sewing the 14 seams in one direction and sewed one in the other direction before I gave up last night.  Of course I want to finish it this month so I have 10 more 90" seams to sew today.

My son stopped by yesterday and got my computer with the dead screen hooked up to my Smart TV with an HDMI cable.  My computer screen appeared so now we know the computer is fine, just the screen is bad.  I spent a ...

Assembly............ from Exuberant Color

I had my last live broadcast for the current Colorwash 360 online class yesterday.  I started cleaning off my cabinet so I could start assembling this plaid quilt that I showed on my design wall a few weeks ago.

As promised yesterday here is the close up of my little 12" colorwash.  I think I'm going to change one of the red squares in the top row before I finish it.  It is bugging me.

A little design wall time................. from Exuberant Color

I needed a break from cutting so I got out the bag of 6" triangle squares and played at the design wall.  I made these blocks about 2 1/2 years ago and couldn't decide whether to group the like ones together or make it all random.  I'm not sure it is worth spending my time to try another layout while I'm busy with other things and I may just go ahead and sew it.  The blocks are made of all plaids and stripes.  It should end up about 72" x 90".

Finish #2 for March 2020............. from Exuberant Color

Binding is the same paisley as the back.  It is a Liberty fabric from a series that Kaffe did the coloration on a few years ago.  Kaffe Meets Plaid finished around 70" x 95".

The fabrics in the triangles are from the Kaffe Collective and date all the way back from the 1990s until August 2016 and plaids I have collected for 40+ years.  There are a couple Martha Negley fabrics in there too.  I am SO happy this one is a finished quilt.

Click on the photos for a closer look at the fabrics.

Spring project............... from Exuberant Color

I finally have my light fixture back in my main floor studio where I usually do my night sewing.  Just in time for spring I am going to start the quilt that I'm calling Spring Star with lots of spring flower colors.

On this one I reversed the center squares and added some 2-print triangle blocks near the corners.  It will mean some more piecing if I do this version because all of the squares sewn had been a dark/light triangle combination.

This one is the same corners as number 2 but another different center.  I just have ...

Searching, cutting............ from Exuberant Color

I needed to search for more low volume prints to pair with the last little group of triangles.  I wanted to have all different prints than the ones I had already cut.  After I took this photo I cut the triangles but ran out of steam last night before I could sew them.
A friend is coming over to sew today so I put my Blooming 9-patch pieces back up on a design wall.  I intend to sew more of the 9 patches today and hopefully cut the fabric for the next round.  It is a black background print so ...

Pressing.............. from Exuberant Color

I sewed another batch of the triangle squares and then decided I had to start pressing them.  I fingernail press them when I'm done sewing and then take them to the iron for a final press.  I pressed 382 of them and there are another 114 waiting to be pressed.
This is the last batch of print triangles and there are one, two, or four of each.  I need to cut some more low volume prints to pair with them.

258................. from Exuberant Color

I sewed another 140 squares last night so I have a total of 258 out of 432 needed.  There are 10 pieces alike in most piles and 8 or 12 alike in a few of them.

Yesterday afternoon I spent a few hours sorting through fabrics and restacking on shelves.   That is always fun and I usually find a fabric or two that I had totally forgotten that I had.

Quilt top completed............... from Exuberant Color

I started this quilt top in 2010 (yes, 10 years ago), one of a series of Kaffe charm quilts.  Every triangle is a different fabric.  There are some repeats of pattern but in different colors.  There are 384 triangles and one border fabric for 385 different fabrics.  The Kaffe prints date all the way back to the beginning of his designs.  In 2010 it was one row shorter in length and that always bugged me because it wasn't a nicely proportioned rectangle so in 2016 I added another row of the squares on point so it measured 66" X ...

Cleaning up.......... from Exuberant Color

While cleaning off tables in the basement I did a little cutting for the next project and also for the postage stamp quilt.

This is my one lonely cactus bloom.  There aren't any buds on any of the other plants and only this one on this plant.  I knew when they almost all bloomed at the same time earlier this winter that there would be a dry spell.

This noisy crow sat in the tree outside my kitchen window and let the neighborhood know he was here.

February is more than half over already.  For the people with Leap ...

#1 finish for February 2020........... from Exuberant Color

This is my Valentine quilt this year.  It has 19 hearts hidden in the piecing, some more obvious than others.  The fabrics are all Australian.  It is 54" x 68" and designing was started in August 2017.  I almost gave up on it after the 2nd day of playing at the design wall in 2017.  The last hand stitches in the binding were done last night.
The back is pieced from one full width and 2 long leftover strips from other backings.

This is my 4th quilt made with Australian fabrics and I still have a stack a foot high ...

Australian Equilateral triangle top done............ from Exuberant Color

I'm still having trouble with a light fixture in my main floor studio so I sewed during daylight hours yesterday and finished this top.  There are several different secondary patterns but the one I worked for was the 2 vertical heart columns on the 2 sides and then random hearts scattered through the center.  There are varying degrees of value contrast so some show up better than others.  I will consider this my Valentine quilt this year.
Backing choices were made too.  The black with circles will be full width and the other 2 pieces are long leftover strips ...

4 rows............. from Exuberant Color

I finished the 2 rows I had partially sewn on Tuesday night and sewed them on the first 2 rows.  After I sew the next 2 I'll pin them on top of rows 3 and 4 and move the pieces of rows 7 and 8 up higher so I can design the last 2 rows.  I may need to change some of the pieces in rows 7 and 8 so I need them to be in pieces at that point.

I have just one half side left to hand sew on the binding of the pastel 16 patch so ...

Binding chosen....... from Exuberant Color

I actually got busy earlier in the day yesterday and chose my binding fabric.

I got it sewn onto the quilt by late afternoon.

And then last night I started hand stitching and got one side almost done.

I also got the top 2 rows sewn on the Australian fabric quilt.  The color is way off on this photo.  I know now that it will be a little under 55" wide and I think 70" long.

My daughter was at the Apple Store in NC yesterday and was talking to Sharon K. who works there.  As they got deeper into ...

Progress on 2................ from Exuberant Color

Here is the photo I promised yesterday with the half triangles in the end positions of the rows.  I still only have half of my lights in this studio so the photo is a little dark.  I still need to add 2 rows to the bottom but there isn't any room so I'll start sewing the top section and then design the bottom 2 rows.
I found some backing fabrics for my pastel 16 patch top that I finished late last year.  The 2 pieces on the left are from my "long strips" box and the one on ...
