Still pairing and sewing triangles.................. from Exuberant Color

I finished sewing 84 pairs of triangles last night.  I have only sewn the pink/blue combination so far.  There are 6 squares of each combination of fabrics.

I opened up one square so you can tell what this pile is; they will finish at 6".  If I follow the pattern I will need 80 squares and the rest would be the pieced border, shown on this post.  It will depend on whether I can find enough of 2 blue Kaffe collective prints for consistent border fabrics.  I would be just as happy making more squares in a variety of ...

3 sections............. from Exuberant Color

It was an odd size quarter square triangle that I needed to finish the rows on this Marcia Derse fabric top.  Once I got the measurement right I cut strips and cut the triangles from them with a ruler for quarter square triangles.  I needed all of the stripes going the same way.  I sewed while I watched TV last night and got this far.  2 more seams and then I can press it and photograph it.  I'm glad I put this top into a time out so I could come up with the perfect solution for the outer ...

Three end of the month finishes (February).................... from Exuberant Color

First up is the Australian fabric 16 patch which I finished on Wednesday.  This is my all time favorite of all of the Australian fabric quilts I have made.  I love the wide border on it.  It ended up at 60" x 77".

The backing is also an Australian fabric which I was lucky to find on sale last year.

The batting is Hobbs 80/20.

Here is a closeup of the backing fabric.

I got a late start last night doing the binding on the two baby quilts.  This one is Donuts and 9 Patches and is 37" square ...

Working on 3................ from Exuberant Color

All of the X and O blocks are sewn now but not pressed yet.  I need 17 O blocks and 18 X blocks so I just realized I'm short one O block.  I can just sew a seam on the other side of an X block and rip out the original seam and I will have an O block.

I took those stacks of 4 blocks off the design wall and started a layout of 6" finished squares with a few 4 patches thrown in.  I need 12 rows for the length and I'm short 14 squares for ...

6 of the 8 final sets.............. from Exuberant Color

I cut 8 sets but only brought 6 of them upstairs to sew last night.  I was too stiff and sore after doing a little over an hour of outside work to go back down and get the others.

I got them sewn last night and will sew the other 2 sets before I do any pressing. Then I can mix them all in with the the ones in the layout on the design wall.

I tore out all of the tomato plants and pulled up the cages and nested them.  Then I picked up branches that have fallen in ...

Flannel progress............. from Exuberant Color

Last night I started sewing sets of 4 blocks that are identical.  I have chosen the last 8 fabrics for more blocks but haven't cut them yet.  I will want to mix those colors into the layout before I sew any more sets of 4.

I had strip sets prepared for 24 sixteen patch blocks so I sewed them too.  I may combine my rectangle blocks with the 16 patches in one quilt.  The rectangles are 4" x 8" finished size and I have a good size stack of them already cut.  I just need to do some figuring ...

Flannel again............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning was cutting time.  I also cut for two more quilts than the two I'm already sewing.

I paired triangles with elongated hexagons.  I have enough triangles cut now for the rest of the blocks I need to cut.

Last night was sewing time.  The blocks on the left are piles of 4 alike.

I took one block of each sewn combination and started a layout on the design wall.  After I make the remaining blocks I will sew duplicates of the X and O blocks because I have 4 alike of most of the blocks.  I need ...

Starting another flannel quilt........... from Exuberant Color

I cut 80 sets of pieces for these flannel blocks and got 64 of them sewn last night.  I cut a lot of dark fabrics yesterday and will cut more medium value pieces today.

This is one layout I am considering.

Here is another layout.  I have used both of these layouts before and liked both of them.

I'm also cutting 3 other shapes for 2 more flannel quilts as I cut for this one.  I'm using up most of the small yardage pieces, less than 1/2 yard.  Today I will probably need to start cutting into ...

Flannel fun....................... from Exuberant Color

In the morning yesterday I pressed the seam of the 3rd large backing and while the iron was on lots of small yardage pieces of flannel were ironed.  I'm ready to do some major cutting today for 3 more flannel quilts.  I need to have something ready to sew tonight.  Last night I did the staystitching around the pinwheel top and sewed strata for fourteen 16 patch blocks.

I took a closeup shot of the fabric that looks like aqua in the pinwheel quilt.  It is a teeny tiny houndstooth check woven of blueish green and white.

First quilt top for February 2024.......... from Exuberant Color

I had a lot of things to press so the iron got turned on yesterday.  This top is 59.5" x 71".  It is large enough without a border so I will staystitch the edges and find a backing for it.

I spent a lot of time in the basement yesterday.  I started out sewing more pieces of batting together.  None of the ones I pieced a couple weeks ago were the right sizes for 3 small quilts I needed them for.  I cut backings for all 3 of the small quilts too.  Then I started working on large backings ...

30 blocks....time to sew a top............. from Exuberant Color

I cut the rest of the blocks yesterday morning and sewed them last night while I watched the two NCIS shows on TV.  I might exchange the 2 at the right end of the bottom row with each other after seeing this on my computer monitor.  I had one block left over, laying on my cabinet.

I didn't find any blue fabrics to add but did find one green.  It looks like aqua here but it is a teeny tiny green check.

The one that looks like Gingham is really a plaid if you click and look close at ...

22 out of 30 blocks............... from Exuberant Color

It took 3 1/2 hours to sew 13 twelve inch blocks last night.  I always think I'm faster than that.  I did all of the cutting for the blocks earlier in the day yesterday.

The pieces for the next three blocks were cut but I was done for the day.  I have chosen the fabrics for the next 5 blocks but I think I need to change out rust colors that I had chosen for the big triangles for blues and greens.  I'll try to finish the cutting today plus more cutting for 3 other flannel quilts ...

Starting the flannel quilts............ from Exuberant Color

I cut pieces for 13 flannel pinwheel blocks on Friday and last night I started sewing them.  I have more pieces prepped for cutting today so I'll have more variety in the rest of the blocks.

I have pieces paired for 4 more blocks with the same fabrics as the first 9 blocks.  I am cutting for 3 more flannel quilts at the same time.  I'm using up some of the yardage pieces by cutting a 2.5" strip for 16 patch blocks out of the small amount left after cutting triangles and chisel shapes.

The red Amaryllis ...

First finish for February 2024............ from Exuberant Color

The scrappy batik Bear Paw quilt is finished.  I trimmed the edges yesterday and sewed the binding all by machine.  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it.

It is 70" x 85".  The top was finished in March 2023.

Since the top is made of many colors I decided on a neutral color backing and binding.

It was in the mid 50s yesterday, the second day in a row, kind of unusual at the beginning of February.  It's way too early for any outside work here because we will still have another month of winter.

#4 quilt top for 2024.............. from Exuberant Color

The last seams were sewn by noon yesterday and then the zig zag baby quilt top got its final pressing.  It is 34.5" x 40".

These 2 will be a nice addition to my available baby quilts when I get them quilted next month.  Right now I'm thinking a white with black print for the back of both of them will keep them gender neutral.

Two or three years ago I cut a pile of elongated hexagons from older Marcia Derse fabrics.  I saw this layout somewhere online and decided to test it.  This is one that would ...

6 more seams to sew.............. from Exuberant Color

Only 6 more seams and this baby quilt top will be finished.  It had 13 seams in one direction and then I sewed 9 of 15 seams in the other direction.  I'll finish sewing the seams this morning and then press it.

We got 4-5" of snow in the very early hours yesterday and then it stopped for a little while and then light rain for most of the day.  I measured the snow on the sidewalk and it was 5" of heavy wet snow.  I think we have about 8" total of snow on the grassy areas now ...

The unexpected............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was one of those days where all of the little things eat away at the hours and by evening I hadn't done anything in the studio.  I went over some lists I had made of things I may want to make but nothing was calling my name.  Then...this little thought came into my head....maybe I could made a zig zag quilt with the leftover triangle squares.  Since I hadn't counted them yet I had no idea how big it would be.  I just started putting rows up on the design wall and there were enough ...

#3 quilt top for January 2024............ from Exuberant Color

Another baby quilt top completed this month. It is a fraction over 37" square.  This was a fun one to make.  It is a combination of the Donut Hole block and 9 Patch blocks.  It is made from pieces in small project boxes, leftovers from this quilt top.  (Scroll down for details about it.)

There are still more pieces left in the 2 boxes.  I need to come up with another idea for them.

I counted the squares and put notes in the box.  I haven't counted the triangle squares yet but I probably will do it.

Here are ...

19 blocks................ from Exuberant Color

I need 6 more blocks for my 25 block baby quilt.  I hope when it is sewn together that the diagonals that are formed by the 9 patches are more prominent.  I thought about grouping some of the donut holes together and some 9 patches in groups so the layout is more random.  But then I thought I'll have this done a lot quicker if I just leave it alone and sew it together the way it is.  The baby isn't going to care.

I got 2 pieces cut for the backing of my batik pineapple log cabin ...

Measuring and cutting............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I pressed the wide backing for the quilt I talked about yesterday and measured twice and cut off the extra portion of the fabric.  Then I measured and cut batting for that quilt plus another one.

Last night I sewed 5 of the donut hole blocks and then thought, what if they were alternated with 9 patches.  Those are just loose pieces on the design wall checking it out.  I will sew some 9 patches so I can get a better idea.

This is the photo from yesterday with edge to edge blocks.  These blocks are going to be ...
