#4 quilt top for 2024.............. from Exuberant Color

The last seams were sewn by noon yesterday and then the zig zag baby quilt top got its final pressing.  It is 34.5" x 40".

These 2 will be a nice addition to my available baby quilts when I get them quilted next month.  Right now I'm thinking a white with black print for the back of both of them will keep them gender neutral.

Two or three years ago I cut a pile of elongated hexagons from older Marcia Derse fabrics.  I saw this layout somewhere online and decided to test it.  This is one that would ...

6 more seams to sew.............. from Exuberant Color

Only 6 more seams and this baby quilt top will be finished.  It had 13 seams in one direction and then I sewed 9 of 15 seams in the other direction.  I'll finish sewing the seams this morning and then press it.

We got 4-5" of snow in the very early hours yesterday and then it stopped for a little while and then light rain for most of the day.  I measured the snow on the sidewalk and it was 5" of heavy wet snow.  I think we have about 8" total of snow on the grassy areas now ...

The unexpected............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was one of those days where all of the little things eat away at the hours and by evening I hadn't done anything in the studio.  I went over some lists I had made of things I may want to make but nothing was calling my name.  Then...this little thought came into my head....maybe I could made a zig zag quilt with the leftover triangle squares.  Since I hadn't counted them yet I had no idea how big it would be.  I just started putting rows up on the design wall and there were enough ...

#3 quilt top for January 2024............ from Exuberant Color

Another baby quilt top completed this month. It is a fraction over 37" square.  This was a fun one to make.  It is a combination of the Donut Hole block and 9 Patch blocks.  It is made from pieces in small project boxes, leftovers from this quilt top.  (Scroll down for details about it.)

There are still more pieces left in the 2 boxes.  I need to come up with another idea for them.

I counted the squares and put notes in the box.  I haven't counted the triangle squares yet but I probably will do it.

Here are ...

19 blocks................ from Exuberant Color

I need 6 more blocks for my 25 block baby quilt.  I hope when it is sewn together that the diagonals that are formed by the 9 patches are more prominent.  I thought about grouping some of the donut holes together and some 9 patches in groups so the layout is more random.  But then I thought I'll have this done a lot quicker if I just leave it alone and sew it together the way it is.  The baby isn't going to care.

I got 2 pieces cut for the backing of my batik pineapple log cabin ...

Measuring and cutting............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I pressed the wide backing for the quilt I talked about yesterday and measured twice and cut off the extra portion of the fabric.  Then I measured and cut batting for that quilt plus another one.

Last night I sewed 5 of the donut hole blocks and then thought, what if they were alternated with 9 patches.  Those are just loose pieces on the design wall checking it out.  I will sew some 9 patches so I can get a better idea.

This is the photo from yesterday with edge to edge blocks.  These blocks are going to be ...

First 2 quilt tops for January 2024............. from Exuberant Color

I sewed this top together yesterday morning.  It is 40" x 60".  It is mostly Kaffe Fassett fabric, many very early prints because the squares were cut many years ago.  There are a couple Martha Negley prints too.  She was a friend of Kaffe's back in the early years of Kaffe's designing and some of her fabrics were featured in Kaffe's early books.

I decided this top doesn't need a border so it is a finished top too.  It is 37.5" x 57".  It would made a great toddler quilt for the big brother or ...

30 blocks.................... from Exuberant Color

The last 5 blocks are finished now for a total of 30.  I decided on a layout of 5 across and 6 down.  One empty project box.

Directions for this block are on Lynn's blog.  She has lots of directions for quilts made with solids and prints and I have 2 finished quilts and 2 tops already made and one more in progress from her blog.

I'm trying to made smaller quilts this year so I can have a little fun with each pattern I choose instead of spending a month on just one quilt.  I have plenty ...

Searching through fabric............. from Exuberant Color

I was looking for blue and turquoise but a purple sneaked in there.  I matched these with the solid colors for the Shoo Fly blocks.  I decided to search through Kaffe Fassett books last night instead of cutting the pieces for the blocks.

I changed to a lighter color thread on my machine and sewed 2 light green blocks yesterday morning.  The one on the right doesn't look that yellow in person but it is a yellow-green.

Back to searching through Kaffe books: I was looking for repeats of layouts.  He revisits older layouts many times in his books ...

Yearly recap for 2023................ from Exuberant Color

I had 30 finishes in 2023.

My goal was to have an average of 2 finished quilts each month = 24.  One month I only had one but I caught up with 3 the next month.  When I got to December I had 4 quilts to finish before Christmas so I knew I was going to exceed my goal of 2.  I also had 2 that were just waiting for binding.  I ended up the month with 2 small colorwash wallhangings for a total of 8 which boosted the year total to 30.

I didn't have a chance of reducing ...

October 2023 monthly recap................ from Exuberant Color

In October I had 2 finishes, both small....that's what happens some months.  On the left is Australian fabric zig zag which ended up at 34.5" x 45.5".  The colorwash is all batiks and is 31.5" square.

There were 4 tops finished and these 2 are the largest.  The African fabric and mottled batiks 16 patch with added batik blocks finished at 64" x 80".  I started this top in September and finished it in October.  On the right, the Bear Paw top is 69" x 84".  The blocks were made in 2021 and they waited ...

Borders sewn on........and more............ from Exuberant Color

I didn't think I was going to get the borders cut and sewn on this Bear Paw quilt before the end of the month.....but I did.  It is 69" x 84" now.  No longer a pile of blocks waiting to be sewn into a top.

Then last night I looked through my list for a small quilt that I could possibly finish by midnight tonight.  This one already had its backing and binding chosen and I had a cutaway piece of batting large enough for it.  This one was just 36" x 45" before quilting.  Finished size will ...

Baking, pressing, searching....... from Exuberant Color

My treats for today and tomorrow

I like my sweets and want some in the freezer to pull out when I have a craving.  I don't like to have the whole batch though so when there is someone to bake for, I bake the things that I want and hope the recipient will like them.  I visited my granddaughter yesterday and took some of it to her.  The little great-grandson is 2 weeks old now and he and his brother slept through my visit.

I pressed the Bear Paw quilt top and got it up on the design wall ...

All sashing strips sewn on...................... from Exuberant Color

I stuck with it and got all of the sashing strips sewn, 3 rows of them.  Now that it is all sewn together I must turn the iron on.  I didn't look for the outside border fabric yet.  In fact I never made it to the basement yesterday.  On a normal day I'm up and down the stairs at least 5 times.  Instead I ran a couple errands between raindrops.  Today I need to get serious about getting this top finished.

Border and sashing day.............. from Exuberant Color

The next border is on the African elephant quilt.  There is at least one more border, the piano key type border of strip piecing leftover from another quilt.  It is 45.5" x 61" right now.

I finally cut the last 2 batting pieces off the big roll and removed the roll from my work table.  Now I can baste a larger quilt.

I decided to start sewing the tiger print sashing on the Bear Paw blocks and got 2 rows done.  This quilt will need a border after the sashing so I'll have to search through my stash ...

July 2023 monthly recap............ from Exuberant Color

Three finishes for July.  That makes up for only one in June and I'm back on my plan for an average of 2 finishes per month, 14 finishes so far this year.  The little green zig zag quilt is 29.5" x 36.5".  In the center the Snail's Trail made with Wishwell Weather Report fabric is 58" x 83".  Improv Strippy is 75.5" x 98.5".

I keep track of my quilt tops by size in 3 categories.  Two of these were in the large category (over 80" on the longest edge).  There are still 14 ...

Trying to catch up............. from Exuberant Color

Since I didn't do much on the Fonthill inspired quilt on Saturday I was playing catch-up yesterday.  I made 15 more pinwheels, sewed the single row border on all 4 sides and then did a layout for the 2 side borders.  I have misplaced a stack of 20 mostly blue pinwheels (note to self: NEVER move anything to a new place).  Rather than turn on every light in the house last night looking for them I decided to wait to today.  Instead of searching I sewed together the right side double pinwheel border (no photo).  My goal was to ...

Pinwheel progress............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I cut triangles from the fabrics shown yesterday.  There were enough triangles for 52 pinwheels but I only need 40.  I also had a few triangles left from previous cutting.  I got 15 new pinwheels sewn.

Those new colors will be mixed in with the piles of pinwheels already completed which are mostly in blues and brown tones (as shown in the center pile).  I need to sew 25 more.

Here is yesterday's temperature and feel like temperature.  There is a weatherbug station at our high school as noted on the screen.  It is about a mile ...

Choosing fabric for pinwheels................. from Exuberant Color

I re-read the section on colors used in the Fonthill quilt in "Passionate Patchwork" and decided to add more of the moss greens.  I have a few already in pinwheels but this will help with variety.  Then I searched for more light fabrics in gold and peach tones.  Also I added in a few more of the rust/orange and a couple pale periwinkle blues.  I didn't get any triangles cut....I am just wiped out.  Two window A/C units in the center of the house make that area too cold and the far reaching areas to each ...

Striped border cut........... from Exuberant Color

The last 2 striped borders were cut and sewn on and the bottom border section assembled.  Then I sewed on the top and bottom sections.

At that point I decided it was too hot to leave the iron on so the 5th border didn't get sewn on yet.  I counted pinwheels and like I thought, I need 50 more to complete the last double row borders.  I have 10 already cut and paired but need to cut triangles for the last 40.

The dew point was 75 in the afternoon.

In the morning it started to get dark as ...
