rotary cutter quilt block

I can hardly believe that the penultimate block of Sew Let’s Quilt Along is already here! Our final block and setting ideas will be released in just two short weeks. If you’ve missed any of the previous blocks, make sure to check out my quilt along page to get the links. Remember, the block patterns will only be free until the quilt along ends on September 24, 2019.

This week’s block features an indispensable tool of the modern quilter - a rotary cutter. I’m forever grateful the rotary cutter was invented. And even more grateful that I ...

Summer Sampler 2019 Block 13: Altitude from Freshly Pieced

It’s Monday … that means I’ve got another Summer Sampler 2019 block for you!

Summer Sampler 2019, Block 13: Altitude by Andrea Tsang Jackson

This is Altitude, designed by Andrea Tsang Jackson of 3rd Story Workshop. Our skill this week is diamonds—they’re not just for lone star quilts, you guys!

Summer Sampler 2019, Block 13: Altitude, designed by Andrea Tsang Jackson

I love that this block is such a unique and creative take on the basic building-block of a lone star quilt. If you can perfect sewing diamonds, it opens up so many design possibilities, like this one. Diamonds can be tricky, but it just takes a little practice to get the hang of them.

Another great thing ...

Perfect HST BOM Block 8: Cedar Star from Freshly Pieced

Good morning! As you read this, I’m just returning from a family vacation to the Wisconsin Dells, otherwise known as the Waterpark Capital of the World. That’s right, the World Atlas says so, so it must be legit. In the Dells there are more waterparks and pools per capita than any other city in North America. It is truly a national treasure. LOL. But while I suffer through waterpark withdrawal, let’s enjoy this month’s HST BOM Block, shall we?

It’s August! How is it August already?! I feel like summer has barely started, and now the girls are just one month from being back to school. But at least another week gone by means another Summer Sampler block! We’re on Block #12 already!

Summer Sampler 2019, Block 12: Fussy Love, designed by Justin Stafford

This is Fussy Love by Justin Stafford of Keaton Quilts. First of all, if you’re not familiar with Justin, you have to head to his website or Instagram to check out his company’s “CEO,” Diane Keaton. You can thank me later, after you’ve enjoyed that cuteness.

This week’s Piecing Bootcamp ...

Color Weave Quilt Along Week 8 – Binding by Machine from Christa Quilts

We’ve finally come to the end of our quilt along and I sure have enjoyed seeing everyone’s progress so far! This week we will finish the quilt with machine binding. Now usually, I prefer the clean look of binding by hand. However, I was in a hurry to make this quilt so I decided to make the machine stitched binding an overall part of the design.

This tutorial is pretty heavy on the videos because I thought it would be much easier to SHOW you my process for binding and explain what I’m doing each step of ...

Summer Sampler 2019 Block 11: Bird’s Eye Weave from Freshly Pieced

Happy Monday! This week’s Summer Sampler block is a two-fer when it comes to skills: Stripes and curves.

Summer Sampler 2019, Block 11: Bird's Eye Weave, designed by Heather Black

I didn’t expect to fall in love with this block, but I did! I feel like there are just so many design possibilities here if you switch up the colors and values, and that’s my favorite kind of quilt block. And, if you think this block is difficult, you’d be wrong. Especially after curve-intensive Block 6! This block was a piece of cake.

And hey: If you purchased the acrylic curve templates from one of our previous Summer ...

Love with a Twist: Nifty Neck Balloon Giraffe from Clever Chameleon

Nifty Neck Giraffe appliqué from the Love with a Twist series by Dione Gardner-Stephen of Clever Chameleon

Shall I tell you a tall story….?

Sure! Once upon a time, there were two slightly naughty, spotted goats who lived with their grandma in a thatched cottage in a small village. Their names were Girome and Giraldeen, and they were non-identical twins. Girome had already grown a little larger than Giraldeen, and a little bit naughtier too.

Girome and Giraldeen, the balloon giraffes

One day Girome said to Giraldeen, “I spy a new lolly jar! Let’s raid it”. And Giraldeen replied “I like your thinking, but we’re banned from climbing the shelves. Remember?”

“Ahhh…..” said Girome, “But Nan didn’t ban us from ...

Summer Sampler 2019 Block 10: Off Kilter from Freshly Pieced

Good morning! This week’s Summer Sampler 2019 block is all about partial seams!

IMG_2611

Partial seams is one of those techniques that sounds super scary and complicated, but it actually isn’t. Like at all! It’s literally sewing a part of a seam, then coming back and finishing that seam later. Faith (the designer of this block) made a video showing you exactly how to do it—see, easy, right? I know you will be pleasantly surprised when you give this block a try!

IMG_2613And, such a cool block, right? Which couldn’t be accomplished any other way except ...

Color Weave Quilt Along Week 7 – Machine Quilting Random Crosshatch from Christa Quilts

How is your quilt coming along? Remember, you can work at your own pace, so please don’t every feel like you have to “catch up!” Last week I discussed making a quilting plan and stitching in the ditch to anchor your quilt. This week we will complete the Random Crosshatch quilting.

Random Crosshatch Quilting

Here’s what it looks like after I’ve stitched in the ditch in both directions and am filling in randomly spaced lines vertically. My Aurifil variegated thread adds lots of texture and I’m not stressing out too much about whether the stitches are perfectly straight or ...

Color Weave Quilt Along Week 6 – Stitching in the Ditch from Christa Quilts

Now we’ve reached my favorite part of the quilt-making process – machine quilting!! Quitling will be broken up into 2 parts so that it won’t feel so overwhelming. The quilting design I’ve chosen – random crosshatch, is actually very easy to do, but it can be a bit time-consuming if you like your quilting to be as dense as mine.

Random Crosshatch quilt plan

My favorite designs to quilt are those than can go all the way across the quilt without starting and stopping. That way I don’t have to worry about tying off and burying my threads. The random crosshatch above ...

Perfect HST BOM Block 7: Rambling Star from Freshly Pieced

Happy July! And guess what – summer has finally reached my neck of the woods! We had our usual gathering of friends and family at my house for the Fourth of July, but beyond that, I’m looking forward to a relaxing month. And in the meantime, the July block of the Perfect HST BOM has dropped!

RamblingStar

This month’s HST BOM block is Rambling Star. This one is named after the street I grew up on in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Well, the street was actually “Ramblewood” but for some reason Ramblewood sounded like a weird name for a block to ...
