A New (Big) Project: Double Four-Patch from Wedding Dress Blue

When I am sorting scraps, or cleaning up after projects, I cut likely pieces into standard sizes: 1-1/2″, 2″, 2-1/2″ squares. They are so handy, sitting there in their little tubs just waiting for a project to come along.

And here it is! Double four-patch.

A large (queen? king?) size quilt made out of 4-1/2″ blocks. Yes, it is a lot, but I have a lot of squares. And I am not in a hurry. And, I already have 11 blocks. Only something like 550+ to go.

Free Motion Quilting – May Garden from I Patch and Quilt

This grid design May Garden is based on a square grid and can be executed with a circle ruler if desired. The design is constructed out of a series of flowers with four petals. May Garden can be used as an allover or edge to edge quilting design, or just in a block or border.  The design will look great on projects with themes like gardening, flowers, butterflies and nature or quilts with a retro ’70s vibe.

Ruler or no ruler?

I used a 1 inch grid for this sample so I did it freehand… which you can clearly see ...

Brown Bag Mystery Quilt from Becca's Crazy Projects

This year I picked my Brown Bag Mystery Quilt based on a single purple print. I had no idea what other fabrics were inside that brown bag or what the quilt design was going to be. I enjoyed this one so much I pulled a set of coordinating fabrics from my collection and got cutting. I still need to sew this one together and find some borders. I cut most of these units using my Accuquilt Go cutter.

I picked up my BBMQ from my local shop The Crabby Quilter in Annapolis, Maryland. If you want to check out the ...

Need More Time for Quilting in a Fast, Busy Life from Sewing Under the Little Mushroom Cap

I’ve Always Known Creativity Gives Me Energy

For as long as I can remember, creating has always made me feel more alive. And ever since I have started this blog and quilt, I have always been inspired and super excited when I think about what I get to do. About the time I get to quilt.

Even during busy seasons, creativity brought me back to myself. What changed recently wasn’t the realization that quilting gives me energy. I’ve always known that. What changed is that somewhere along the way, I stopped prioritizing it.

Let’s chat about ...

Economy Baby COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

This is truly an Economy Baby Quilt–the block is an 8″ economy block, and it was built entirely of hand-me-downs and scraps.

The feature fabric is adorable (not sure of line). And the quilting echoes the theme.

Finished size is 40″x40″.

It goes in the donation pile.

Cheater Patchwork Layer Cake Quilt COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

The pattern is called Cheater Patchwork by Happy Quilting. It calls for TWO layer cakes, but I used one and filled in with coordinating solids.

Finished size is 72″x72″.

I LOVE the Henhouse line of fabric (Available at your local quilt shop or online. I got mine on Ebay). Such a great variety of prints, and the colors do a great job of walking the line between traditional and contemporary.

It was delivered to a fellow teacher who I have worked with for a few years, but just recently served with on a committee. Once you get to know ...

Land of Enchantment from Lovin' Life At The End Of The Dirt Road

As much as I will always be a Texas girl, I have to admit that New Mexico has a special place in my heart. It's where DH and I began our journey as a married couple. It's where our son was born. It's where the good Lord has set us for the second time. It's home. The sunsets and sunrises are spectacular on a regular basis.  The food is addictive and don't even get me started on how much I

Free Motion Quilting – Foliage from I Patch and Quilt

Have you ever turned a clamshell design on its side and used it as a border design? Well, here you go!

The machine quilting design Foliage is based on molar feathers and quarter circles. The grid design works well as a single border design or as a repeated grid pattern, like in the image below.

FMQ-ipatchandquilt-Foliage-01

Foliage is loose and structured at the same time. Yes, the grid in this design creates structure, but the molar feathers are loose and free-flowing within their available space.

Stitch this design from left to right as a single or double row and pre-mark it ...

Lucky Hearts Baby Quilt COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

A coworker is having a baby soon. When asked about a quilt she said that she liked teal-aqua and the room would have a farm animal theme, “You know, like elephants!” I am not sure how many elephants the average farm (outside of Asia) has, but this quilt does have them.

The block is a modified version of Scrappy Log Cabin Heart block. It is a great pattern and highly recommended.

Because of the elephants, I selected a quilting design with that theme. AND, because I am super lucky, found fabric in my stash that has both the right colors ...

Quilting Book, Fat Quarters By The Dozen from Sewing Under the Little Mushroom Cap

If you’re like me, you’ve got fat quarter bundles stacked everywhere with very little plan for actually using them.

That fabric guilt is real. You see gorgeous bundles, buy them with the best intentions, and then they sit in your stash while you scroll Pinterest looking for the perfect pattern. Meanwhile, the pile grows and the finishing rate stays very low, but the beautiful collections keeps coming out and you simply love the idea of working with them!

Well, today, I am sharing you one way that I’ll be trying to stick to this year and possibly ...

whew – it’s April from Terificreations's Weblog

Audrey awoke from her deep sleep with a level of activity never before witnessed. Later tonight or early tomorrow morning the fermentation process for sweet dough begins. I’m making a double batch to share. As I started this the delightful memories of checking a book on how to make a loaf of bread out of… Continue reading whew – it’s April

Baby Quilt c. 1947 from Wedding Dress Blue

While visiting my parents in rural Colorado, my mother decided to go through her cedar chest.

Among other treasures, I saw for the first time, her baby quilt, made for her by her Grandmother.

This is the same woman responsible for the blocks in the BUTTERFLY QUILT.

While the quilt shows its age, the workmanship still shines through.

Paper Piecing Big Buck 45″x 45″ from Wisonsin Quilting

With a blizzard ongoing here in Wisconsin, and a Kona Storm in Hawaii, it’s a good time to focus on color for a bit.

On many (most) of the patterns I produce, both custom and for the internet, I suggest colorways that folks can purchase from a single manufacturer. Exceptions are when colors need to be very close to the same hue and value. An ombre fabric can often provide the subtle shadings (for example, in a wedding gown) to give the suggestion of curves and shadows. In rare cases, you can have fabric custom dyed. In the case ...

Scrappy Sampler Sew Along: Final Blocks from Wedding Dress Blue

This week I completed my final blocks for the  2026 Sew Along: Scrappy Sampler.

Well, I completed the block count for the middle size option. The friendship star block just didn’t appeal to me, so I found another option. Using THIS TUTORIAL, I make a 12″ bear paw variation. There wasn’t enough of any of the solid pink fabrics to make the center squares for the paw, so I used two different fabrics and created HST as an option.

Sashing and inner borders next. There is a lot to them, so it might be two weeks before I ...

Charming: Independence Trail from Becca's Crazy Projects

I spent the week quilting this charming quilt by doing a couple passes a day. I love how that texture shows up with afternoon light.
The quilting is subtle as I used a matching cream colored thread.
Quilted and trimmed. Now for some binding.

Puffed Out! from The Quilt Quine

I had such a busy week that I actually forgot that I had a long weekend. At first I wondered what I was going to do with it. Perhaps I should’ve planned to go away. I had two intense days of long arm quilting mastery teaching which went very well. I also gave a talk to the local Quilt group and everybody stayed awake so that’s always a good sign. It was great to see some of my quilts again which just live in a suitcase. I have been driving around with them all week because I can ...

Procrasti-blogging from Terificreations's Weblog

Procrasti-blogging: writing a blog post when there are ten other things in need of doing. The opportunity to write this afternoon is too good. I am going to figure out where I am in piecing several blocks with this scrumptious Cherrywood Fabric. It is quite gorgeous, isn’t it. There are at least 9 blocks here… Continue reading Procrasti-blogging

Charming: Independence Trail from Becca's Crazy Projects

After assembling my quilt center, and adding a narrow border, it was time for the wide border.
There was some miscalculation with the wide, outer border but I didn't let that discourage me. Those borders are pieced, but just a little bit. Then I got it loaded onto the longarm frame and ready for quilting. This one will take a few days.

In case you missed it, here is a link to Bonnie's free pattern for Four Patch Fun so you can make your own blocks
