Pineapple Crush Quilt ~ Aura Blog Party from Charm About You

pineapple quilt blocks made with Aura fabric

Mister Domestic invited me to his Aura Blog Party and I was like, "woaaaah.", and then saw the fabric and I was like, "woaaaah." and then it came to me that this would make the perfect pineapple quilt, "woaaahh..."

So this is my ode to Mr Crush Turtle, with turtles swimming through the denim water and geometric coral reef! A tropical blend of modern and traditional, this quilt is simultaneously structured and choatic. The clean lines of the pineapple blocks and the way I've placed the colours makes for a striking layout yet the prints themselves are scattered throughout ...

Two More Quilt Tops To Finish Out the Year! from Quilty Folk

As the year was coming to an end, I found myself very determined to squeeze in enough time to finish at least two more quilt tops.  These were projects that I really, really didn't want hanging over my head all throughout the next year!

Sweet Hospitality
The first one I tackled was the pineapple quilt. These blocks were started sometime in 2017. Can't find the exact month, but the plan was to mix them with stringy improv. basket blocks. Yeah. That was a big fat NO. Eventually I got the basket blocks together into a nice looking quilt ...

One Little Step At a Time from Quilty Folk

Back to work on the pineapple blocks. It's been almost a year since they were set aside, but you have to know they were never forgotten. I've played with all kinds of layout ideas and background colors since, dragging them out for a brief consultation and then putting them away in frustration once again.

The Pineapple Quilt
Finally, this fall, I settled into the idea of vertical rows {how boring!} in a background of a light, almost coral pink fabric. All the various yellow and gold fabrics used were bound and determined to squabble, and nothing seemed to ...

Sisters' Stay At Home Retreat {Bits and Bobs} from Little Bunny Quilts

This past weekend, my husband was out of town for work so I invited my sister Amanda (the Doll third of Honey, Bunny, and Doll!) to abandon our domestic responsibilities for a day to sew and eat frozen pizza (two of our favorite things!).

The first thing that I worked on was the top of my Summer Patio quilt for our August Island Batik Amabassador hop. I posted some preview pictures of the start of this quilt, but I'm not showing off anything else until my hop day on August 28th!

Next, I quilted a mini quilt for Amanda ...

☀ pineapple, honey bloom & sun spell quilts ☀ from Charm About You

Three is the magic number! Here are 3 recent quilt finishes, quite different in style, and a little needle book for the cuteness. These were all made for Sewing Quarter, you can catch up with the shows on YouTube and if you keep reading you'll reach the clip I've included that shows how I bind (I'm making the needle case but I sew binding on quilts the same way!).

This quilt is my Mai Tai Pineapple quilt, so named because the bright colours reminded me  of tropical cocktails as I was making it!

The Creative Grids Pineapple ...

Pineapple Table Runner from Thread Head

I finished up the scrappy Pineapple block table runner this week -

It is 16"x28, with 4" blocks. I used a Marti Michell Pineapple ruler set for these blocks (with 1/2" finished strips). It was very easy to cut out, and enjoyable to sew.

Simple all over meander free motion quilting (because it is my favourite to stitch). I used 2 layers of cotton batting, and regular Aurifil thread for the quilting.

This is last week's block for the Temecula Quilt Company 1880 Sampler sew along (also a 4" block).

I also finished knitting a little neck warmer ...

When the Blocks Start With the Crazy Talk from Quilty Folk

I know, it's making you feel dizzy.

Getting the basket blocks sewn together and trimmed
It was making me feel the same way, no matter how many applique blocks I threw on the wall or how I changed the setting.
What's it gonna look like with the addition of the pineapple blocks?
This was one of those ideas that started out with a stack of gorgeous {to me} fabrics and lots of behind the scenes meditation on how to best use them. The bottom line always came back to trying to blend some improv. sewing with a sort ...

Something New from Thread Head

Recently I was talking with a friend about starting new projects (the start of the year seems to always bring an abundance of quilt alongs, knit alongs, spin alongs...). She suggested it would be a good idea to remember being excited about projects we already had on the go when they were new, and to work on them for a week at a time to get them done. Brilliant idea!

So for the past week I worked on a project that I started exactly two years ago - a Pineapple Quilt. All the pieces had been cut and I had pieced ...

Scrappy Pineapple Quilt Finish from Studio Dragonfly Quilts

This quilt originally started out as a gift for my mom. She wanted a quilt. I wanted to make a pineapple block. Perfect match, right? Well, no. This crazy, bright, bold quilt is very much my style but not so much hers. I set this aside to make a quilt she would love. You can read about that one here. I knew when I got back to working on this one, it would be for me.

I had never made a pineapple block before and I used the tutorial from Crazy Mom Quilts. It was a little slow going at ...

The Adhoc. Improv. #29 Catch-up Post from Quilty Folk

I can hardly believe we're into the third year of Kaja and Ann's adhoc. improv. challenges! This focus on utility improv. has been so timely for me as a quilter and I'm thrilled they are continuing with the prompts. First up for AHIQ #29 is the completed quilt top for Ann's last challenge, 'Use Your Words'.

Make Beautiful Things a completed quilt top!
This top started with orphan blocks and the idea that that the entire quilt would be a message of sorts. What do I want my quilts to say?  It took awhile to come ...

The Pineapple Blocks Are on the Wall and the Little Christmas Runner is Finished! from Quilty Folk

So here we are, just days from Christmas. I am honestly starting to panic as I still need to do that last minute Christmas shopping. Not feeling very organized this year!

Looking at the pineapple blocks!
On the quilting front, things are still plugging along, although very slowly. I finished up all the applique stitching on my pineapple blocks and will hopefully get started on the connecting blocks here soon. It's all been happening in small blocks of time that otherwise would be wasted while cruising on the Internet or whatever. These blocks were something that I seriously wanted ...

A Little Bit of Hand Work is Better Than None from Quilty Folk

So last week really wiped me out. I didn't even pick up any sewing until later in the week and then I mostly concentrated on hand sewing or hand quilting. And not very much of that as the hand quilting felt heavy. Yeah. I was pretty run down and feeling sorry for myself.

Pineapple sewing
Started in stitching some of these pineapple blocks which have actually been prepped for a couple weeks. Yep. That happened after I had a little meltdown over the lack of hand stitch ready to go at a moments notice. Wowsers, was I ever glad ...
