Finishing embroidered pages. from contemporary embroidery

In my last post about this hand embroidered artist book I mentioned how the next stage would be to back each page.

That is happening now and I am about to create a front and back cover, again from delicate stitched papers.

I demonstrate the backing process in the video today.

In the video I also show a glimpse of the embellishment on each page, pages created by first stitching delicate tissue papers and tearing them to create surfaces for hand embroidery.

Edges for pages from contemporary embroidery

The pages for my new artist book are almost finished.

The surfaces are embellished with hand stitch and scraps of vintage cloth so I'm now considering the left hand edges, the edges which will be secured when this finally reaches book form.

Once the edges are attached with more hand stitching these pieces will need to be backed with more stitched paper.

I will then bind them together with either ribbon or hand stitched ball buttons....or maybe both.

Sewing machine from contemporary embroidery

The past couple of days have been spent on my sewing machine creating surfaces, paper and cloth as a base for hand embroidery.

The paper ones are much needed at the moment as I'm currently working on a few more of these.

Hand embroidery on these pieces is the next stage.

There will be lots of bullion and French knots along with buttonhole stitch edges and vintage fabric snippets.

More white on stitched paper. from contemporary embroidery

More has been added to the pieces you saw in my last post.

What I love most about these pieces is the irregular edges which come from tearing papers, overlaying papers.

Curved lines of buttonhole stitch, bullion knots and French knots emphasize those irregualr edges.

It's then really exciting to find snippets of white to add to that surface and continue embellishing.

Today I realised I need to stitch more papers in order to finish this piece.

Another process for these compositions which I love.

Paper and white from contemporary embroidery

More white today, another diversion.

This time it's paper.

A stitched paper base, embellished with hand embroidery and snippets of vintage and new cloth.

There are plans for crystal buttons, seed beads and pearls too.

The large hand made ball buttons may find a place....we'll see how and if they fit further along in this process.

Design for Embroidery. from contemporary embroidery

We've been doing a little design work in class so these sheets created a while ago came out.

It's such a good creative exercise to examine pieces like this.

They reinspire and spark new ideas regardless of your current project.

Techniques used here are transferable

Colour, theme and pattern may differ but presentation technique can be used again and again.

Doodling with needle and thread on paper. from contemporary embroidery

A paper base, lots of French knots, some running stitch, fabric snippets, paper inserts, beads and sequins.

Just doodling really but hoping this evolves into a design sheet crammed with information and inspiration.

More has been added to this since I took these photographs.

I will show you that progress soon.

Grids and Guides stitching from contemporary embroidery

It's a hardback notebook today, one of these (and no, I'm not on commission).

I can recommend stitching into one of these books.

There are pages of dots, graph paper and other linear patterns which make spacing so easy.

The paper is very receptive to needle and thread too.

I haven't actually worked into this one for a while and I'm tempted but I must finish some other things first.

Feeding creativity from contemporary embroidery

It's time to take a closer, more considered look at my current design project.

I have created and gathered a large amount of work and sometimes I'm blinded by it all.

Today I've collected a few pieces together for more focus, (less clutter) in order to move forward.

So now I'm digesting the information here, in this image. There's more clarity which will help the decision making and hopefully generate ideas going forward.

If you'd like to catch up on this current collection there are several links below.

Hand stitched overlays from contemporary embroidery

Hand stitched overlays for the pages in this little book.

They provide depth along with space to add more embellishment.

They are yet to be attached as I have plans for fabric swatches too and perhaps some little buttons for the pages, all coordinated of course.

More bits and pieces. from contemporary embroidery

In my last post I was rescuing homeless samples, adding more embellishment and joining them to create larger pieces. The pieces here today live in the same cabinet. The needlecase and pin pillow were created in class. The other two pieces here are stitched papers. Altered with machine stitch before hand embroidery was added. They are also homeless samples I guess. I'm
