Stitch by stitch, block by block, a mini improv quilt and some paintings from Not Afraid of Color

just a test of my posca pens

I've been sewing, painting and sketching this week. This is my little round up of each....

I got stuck working to turn a set of 12 RSC blocks into a person sized quilt this week, so I took them off the design wall and put up another set I did last year, and loved them!

however I found only 10 blocks  so I quickly made two more in colors I like,

yellow/gold

and

purple for RSC color of the month of April

and began to think of how to make these ...

Make Art from Becca's Crazy Projects

I wasn't looking for a tutorial for using watercolors but I found one. This great video showed me the basics and I put watercolors on paper. I added a dark gray Sharpie in regular point and fine point.
This is where I stopped. I think it ended up being an interesting piece. I might make another one of these and maybe use more colors of Sharpie.

My creative week hearts and flowers, sewing and painting from Not Afraid of Color

it was a week of hearts while working on a border for my 1930's fabric quilt from rainbow scrap challenge last year.  More about that quilt when it's done, but I had a fun time looking through my more traditional blocks books on how to border and sash quilt blocks.

these were the blocks done last year... and since it's purple month again I will show that one!

all the blocks are now arranged and sewn in a way that creates circles to be quilted... and the center section is 32" X 42" and I'd like ...

My creative week drawing and painting this week.... from Not Afraid of Color

I am enjoying the free lessons on sketchbook revival. So much that I had to break my creative week offerings into two posts, that's a good thing!

The first pic is only my own sketch of my beloved poodle Milo.... dressed up as Easter Bunny...

so this post is all about drawing and painting and paper as substrate. Tomorrow I will share my quilt.

Again not on sketchbook revival, but just a lesson I took on youtube, is one of my favorite drawings of the week

from this tutorial....

My creative week was full of color! from Not Afraid of Color

I remember now! I love painting!

I have enjoyed a week of Sketchbook revival video lessons this week and it continues with terrific teachers.... I won't share it all this week, but opened with one lesson in freeing yourself up to color that can be used by any artist.

I will share some of my quilting after this because I enjoy many mediums...

The teacher for that project is Helen Wells.

>Draw an organic blobby shape, >then over that a zigzaggy shape. >then draw a line from top of page to bottom, and one from side to side. Look ...

My Creative week, part one FOMO plus two paintings from Not Afraid of Color

FOMO   9.5" X 16"

This is my project quilting offering for the last prompt of this year... "fear" what do you fear?

crikey, let's not take a month to list all my fears! I settled on "F (ear) O(f) M(issing) O(ut).

I love an event, a parade, a fair, an art show, a tour of museums, etc... going and doing. I am also imuno-compromised,  born with only one kidney, and have survived some deadly viruses like Meningitis for example and have lifelong effects from it.

I am allergic to the vaccine for covid.

Watercolors from Becca's Crazy Projects

Sometimes I get an urge to paint. I'm not particularly good at it. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. I do. I painted this unconventionally colored cat. Once this dried it wasn't quite so runny, but much more splotchy and great.
And these delightful little birbs. These were made using a video tutorial by Diane Antone Studio. They were really easy to paint and I think the results are great. I used a fine tip Sharpie for the details. If you want a really accessible art tool, Sharpies are great! I see more watercolors in ...

My Creative week includes... peeps, pineapple pinks, birds and hexies! (and a painting) from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to this week's creativity round-up! Let's get started with a wee chickadee...

I have several items to share today. The Stay-at-home-round-robin (SAHRR) is coming along... and that's what the bird is for... a "square-in-a-square block" but I will start with my rainbow scrap challenge blocks in the scrap color of the month, PINK!

I'm still trying to learn to easily use the Gylene Fitzgerald pineapple scrappy ruler. I decided to stop trying to only use 1.5" strips, wasting too much for my taste, and instead cutting squares into fourths to add each new row ...

my creative week.... Fun with Dick and Jane, SAHRR challenge met and some paintings from Not Afraid of Color

book cover, Fun with Dick and Jane  9" X 12.5"
the Project Quilting prompt this week was to interpret a favorite book...I remember the magical moment when I realized the alphabet I'd been singing and writing was the key to reading. The spark grew instantly. I came home and said, I CAN READ! I've never stopped!

As I pondered what to make in one week, I thought of our 1st grade readers.

I thought of the other books that have also marked a time period  for me

Jessamy a story of a young girl who visits ...

my creative week.... drawing, quilting, coping from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to this week's creativity round up, where I've been obsessed with finishing this big bed quilt!

I took time each day this week to listen to the lectures sent by Art Apothecary, on ways to be more creative, and the health benefit to making art. Pictures to follow on the above quilt but allow me to share one little drawing exercise meant to encourage your own wisdom and inner muse.

we were to think of a question or problem to solve. write it down. choose a color to begin (red was mine) close our eyes and just ...

my creative week.... a finish, a painting, fabric acorns and two collaborations from Not Afraid of Color

a finish! table runner close up  12" X 35"
Welcome to this week's creativity round-up... a painting collaboration, a quilting collaboration, and following a pattern (difficult for me!)

Let's start with the painting....

my friend at https://canadianneedlenana.blogspot.com/ takes spectacular photos of nature, this week she shared a pic of a junco which inspired me to try to draw then paint it...

I was struck by the blue mixed with black and white, and the little sparkling eyes.

What inspires you to make art from nature? There's always something... how to capture the light on ...

my creative week.... from Not Afraid of Color

Welcome to this week's creativity round up... a bit of paint, a bit of fabric, lots of color!!!

when I had to switch phones, I tested it by calling my friend Cindy. As we talked about art and life, I doodled the index card above. It didn't turn out like I hoped because I didn't segment the points first. But it was fun, and I got to play with bright watercolors!

I'm going to go back and forth from paintings to sewings.... it's all arting!

I sewed a lot this week, making this for RSC ...

my creative week a quilt finish, a few paintings and a sewing machine story from Not Afraid of Color

For this week's creativity round-up I have a finished quilt, a few paintings and a sewing machine story

The quilt above was pieced from scraps sent to me after the colorful fabriholic finished her kaleidoscope quilt. I have made good use of them, and their colors are perfect for this time of year. Now I let these scraps sit waiting for this time of year, because I like to work in colors of a season.

The finished quilt is small, lots of careful improv stitching, and is perfect on my bedside table. It looks like a topaz geode would ...

my creative week sewing, painting, and more from Not Afraid of Color

Some weeks you finish projects and some weeks are full of all the decisions and work of making them. This was a week of learning in 3 workshops, and background sewing for two big projects. The little stack there is made of 84 blue scrap squares cut out to make a border for this project in the works

I found the pattern on canadianneedlenana I Like post a few weeks ago and had to make it. The blocks are small and full of sewing tiny pieces and it was challenging but it's all together now and needed some visual ...

my creative week... drawing, painting, sewing from Not Afraid of Color

For this week's creativity round up I am starting with vase of flowers. This is from a two week list of prompts to make something 2" square each day. Sometimes I make two...

I am using index cards again, and sometimes painting then cutting down. DH came out of the office, saw a painting I just finished and asked how the neocolor crayons worked. I did a quick leaf study...

then cut it down to 2" engaging the edges. This works as we naturally want to paint the whole scene but it often is more dramatic ...

My creative week... painting a quilt, sewing a quilt from Not Afraid of Color

I watched this video lesson on how to draw and paint this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4QQqg0fi80&list=TLPQMjgwNDIwMjJec36i-sddtg&index=7

not as easy as it looks. I had to figure out how many motifs fit on my paper, set the compass, know what intersections to place the point in and how far to circle. Whew! but I was motivated and haven't done this before. Then paint the little centers

Take a big rest... think about it... I used my pointiest smallest brush, and my kuretake gansai tambi watercolors which have a sort of shiny cast to ...

My creative week Sewing/painting/ tutorials from Not Afraid of Color

on offer this week at the creativity round up is drawing on index cards (no prompts), sewing on several projects, and video tutorials.

I started by watching a video on Botticelli and his work Venus. While watching I was struck by the beauty of venus and took out a stabilo crayon and index card to capture the feeling.

a quick line sketch with a water soluble stabilo crayon, then judicious use of a water brush to drag the black crayon into shadows.

a little white gel pen for highlights, and I just love her.

next up was a zentangle ...

now, how am I gonna close that box again!?
The color of the month at Rainbow Scrap challenge is Orange, use those orange scraps!

This week I took a free online paper crafts class at Rebecca Page, as well as sewing a good bit. I'll show you the things I spent time on, so let's start the show! Starting with fabric...
