Weekly update: a destash, almost a flimsy, RSC October + reading from With Strings Attached

Old School Forest Preserve

Chicagoland is officially in a drought but the cloudless skies ("100% of available sunshine") and warm temperatures are the kind of weather I'd like to bottle.

At Van Patten Woods on Friday:  sulfur butterfly on New England aster, viceroy butterfly, yellow wooly bear caterpillar.

The viceroy is a monarch mimic. The visible difference is the black band across the lower wing. (Read about other differences in this article)

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Scraps from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Most of this week was spent cleaning up after our Sew Day Fundraiser. It was a challenge, but I was able to find a home for almost everything. We plan on having another Sew Day next spring, but I think we will make blocks for Veterans. I already pulled a big box of patriotic and RWB scraps to start cutting. You can’t be too prepared!

I did find a bit of time to cut and sew up some flannel scraps that all seemed to work together into a nice little quilt top. I think I cut the rectangles at ...

Weekly update: quilt show, a new trail, some quilting + reading from With Strings Attached

The Southport Quilt Guild holds its annual show at the Anderson Arts Center on the lakefront in Kenosha.  The quilts are hung by the arts center staff and the show is up for a month.  There's no admission fee.

View of the lake from a second-floor window.  Podgaji "flags" guided visitors to the front door.

There were 75? or so quilts on display.

This was fun!  Each visitor got a clipboard with a scavenger hunt sheet.  ("How many points are in the star in quilt #70?" "Which quilt is named Daniel?" "What color is the center pinwheel on quilt ...

Oh Scrap! : Flannel Scraps from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Whew! Yesterday was a good day but it sure cut into my work time last week.  We had our first Sew Day Fundraiser.  Poor planning on my part because I scheduled it the same day as the Civil War game here in Eugene.  Not only was traffic bad, but lots of people stayed home to watch the game.

I did get a fantastic surprise...one of my readers traveled hours to stop by and bring us a huge stack of blocks and some fabric.  She couldn't stay and sew but it made my day that I got to meet ...

Weekly update: an exhibit, golf, and quilting progress from With Strings Attached

Way back in May Sue and I talked about meeting at the College of DuPage to see the Hokusai exhibit.  We made it on Thursday -- just in time since it closes  September 21.

I took a one-semester Japanese history course in high school and it's remarkable what I remember (Ukiyo-e, the Floating World) despite all that I have forgotten.

Like the Mona Lisa,  Hokusai's The Wave is a lot smaller in person than its reputation.

There were prints by Hokusai's contemporaries.  The exhibit comes from an Italian museum based on the collection of Edoardo Chiossone, an ...

Oh Scrap! : Putting Scraps to Use from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I'm here - just a little late this morning.
I taught a class on Saturday and just ran out of time to write my post.

I am pretty much finished cutting all my scrappy chunks into useable sizes.  Now it is time to get things sewn.  Many Hands and Many Hearts will have a craft table at an event in November so we are now busy sewing the items to sell.

Next to my sewing machine I have a nice big stack of cut fabric and some Wrap N Zap batting to turn into Bowl Cozies.  I am using this ...

Weekly update: friends and inspiration at the Wisconsin Quilt Show from With Strings Attached

Last week Wisconsin Quilt Show returned to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison for the 21st year.   It was begun by Nancy Zieman and Wisconsin PBS as the Wisconsin Quilt Expo, hence my blog label.   This was the seventh time I've attended and the first time I've stayed overnight.

I picked up Carolyn at the Milwaukee airport Wednesday afternoon.  We drove from there to our hotel in Verona, a now-suburb adjacent to Madison.

We set up the sewing machines in the hotel breakfast room / lounge.  That attracted other hotel guests and we had good conversations.

Both the FW ...

Oh Scrap! : Pinwheels from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Our September Board Meeting is coming up next week so I did not get much of a chance to play with scraps.

But I did get a few more of my pinwheel blocks finished.  I have 15 blocks finished to date.  I think I am going to make this quilt 60 x 70" (the blocks are 10" square).  So I still have a lot more blocks to go.

I really like the gray and blue color combination!

Weekly update: quilt shops, the stash report, Christmas braid flimsy, and OMG from With Strings Attached

I brought souvenirs back from New England--two t-shirts, a tea towel, refrigerator magnets -- and fabric!  I went to four quilt shops and a thrift shop.

A Quilter's Garden is in Montpelier, VT.

Sew Far North is in Littleton, NH.

The Golden Gese [taken from the owner's surname] is in Concord, NH.

The late Victoria Carroll-Parkhill, whose blog was Park Hill Farm, patronized this shop. When we were in New Hampshire in 2018 I met her there.

I had a wonderful six-degrees-of-separation experience at Haphazard Quilting in Canaan, NH.

I mentioned to Deb, the shop owner, that I was ...

Oh Scrap! : Tiny from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Today's scrap project is brought to you by my dog Arthur.  Twice this week, he has grabbed a plastic bag and ran through the house leaving a trail of HSTs in his wake.

I finally decided to just give him the plastic bag to destroy, and I would do something with the tiny bits inside. Were they trash or treasure?

I don't usually play with tiny.  But these 2"(?) HSTs were all made so beautifully, I felt like I should at least sew them up into some blocks - even if they ended up on the orphan block pile ...

Oh Scrap! : More Pinwheels from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week, I dealt with a huge pile of scraps that has been bugging me for quite some time.  We are cutting up scraps for the upcoming sew day, for items for our craft fair, for RWB string blocks and for my pinwheel blocks.

I ended up with 5 more framed pinwheel blocks.  Not a lot to show for all the cutting I did but the pile of scraps is a lot smaller.  I still have a lot more scraps to cut but it doesn't look quite so daunting!

Hoping for more progress next week!

Weekly update: festival and pillows from With Strings Attached

Two more forest preserves checked off the list: Rollins Savanna on Friday and Old School on Sunday.

Top: compass plant, woodbine (also called virgin's bower and devil's darning needles!).

Bottom:  wild petunia, great blue lobelia.

No walk on Saturday. Zion Woman's Club helped at the welcome table on Saturday at the  Zinnia and Monarch Festival.  It's a celebration of community diversity and unity.   Zinnia seeds are given out every spring and at this time of year the colorful flowers are in home gardens and at businesses.

There's a monarch release, too.

After that shift ended ...

Oh Scrap! : Pinwheels from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Sorry I didn't share any finished quilts this week.  But I ran out of treated quilt labels. The table I use to add mod podge to the labels is completely covered with fabric, scraps, and who knows what else.  Hopefully by the end of the weekend, I will get it cleared off.

Then there will be a whole lot of finishes to share!

Lately, I have been seeing so many quilts with pinwheels.  I finally decided to give in and get out some scraps to make some.  I have a bunch of slate blue fabric I would like to ...

Weekly update: what goes around + quilt exhibit from With Strings Attached

The guild hosts a monthly skill-builder workshop to teach a particular technique.  This Saturday it was machine-sewing pogaji.   Pogaji, sometimes spelled bogaji, are Korean patchwork wrapping cloths.  (See more here .)  Traditionally they are hand-sewn but quiltmaker Elisabeth Decroos of  Epida Studio has developed (perfected) pogaji style by machine.

Guild member Karen showed us the trick to this *reversible* patchwork:  flat-felled seams.  The second trick is to use batiks since they are reversible anyway.

Top: Karen's class sample.   Bottom:  what I created.

 A closeup.

What goes around comes around:  Dawn brought a tote bag to the skill-builder class. It held ...

Oh Scrap! : Not Again! from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I seem to be unable lately to keep track of my days.  Especially around our board meetings.
Sorry for the delay in getting up this post!

I didn't get any scrap quilting done this week so I thought I would share this lovely 30"s basket quilt top Nann sent in to us.  We didn't have any 30's fabric for the backing but Cindy sent in this pretty floral with a navy background that looked nice.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Weekly update: a hug, quilt show entries, stash report, and August goals from With Strings Attached

I've enjoyed walks nearly every day.

Top: swamp milkweed, purple coneflower, blue lobelia. Center: vervain, liatris (blazing star), red lobelia. Bottom: nodding onion, pinnate coneflower (Mexican hat), Culver's root.

Milkweed nourishes monarch caterpillars and tussock moth caterpillars.

On to quilting!

My dear Magpie friends made a two-sided hug quilt for me. It was in the mail held for me during my trip.  It began as two hugs, one for Stevens and one for me, but it turned into one.  The blocks are from the U.S., Canada, England, and Australia.

My side was assembled by Terri and Gilly ...

Oh Crap! : Florals from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Sorry about the lateness of my post.  I wrote it yesterday but forgot to publish it.

I am still working through a bunch of scraps for Many Hands and Many Hearts.  In addition to our sew day in September, we are doing a craft table in November so many of our scraps are going to be used to make some small saleable items.

I saw I had a lot of floral chunks (mostly trimmings from backings) so I thought I would also make some simple blocks.  I not only had enough blocks to make a quilt finished in one afternoon ...

Oh Scrap! : Sew Day Preparation from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This week, I have gone back to cutting in preparation for a Sew Day Fundraiser we are having September 20th.  I will have more specific information soon.  I try to only do the cutting in spurts and then let my shoulders rest.  I have plenty of time to get it all prepared.

I have been pulling any and all scraps we have that will work for kid blocks.  I have already cut the 4.5" squares and now I am working on the 2.5" strips.  As I am sorting scraps, any that make a good binding candidate are getting ...

Oh Scrap! : Does this Work? from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

There are a lot of things classified as scraps here at Many Hands and Many Hearts.  Yes, we have tons of fabric bits piled on lots of surfaces.  And we are always looking for new ideas on how to use them.  Additionally, we consider orphan blocks, scrappy string blocks (that have no home), UFOs and every other bag of goodies that comes our way "scraps".

Well, one of my jobs is to find ways to get these all into quilts.

Earlier this week, I was digging through my bags and boxes of blocks.  Marci always keeps us well stocked with ...

Weekly update: a flimsy and a start from With Strings Attached

I've had great walks the past few days.   So many wildflowers!    Waterlilies, purple coneflower, Queen Anne's Lace.  Monarda, gray-headed or pinnate prairie coneflower, chicory.  Elderflower, mountain mint, broadleaf arrowhead.

Mulberries are ripe but hard to reach.   Black cap raspberries are easier to get to though the canes are scratchy.

Two mulberries on the left, black caps on the right.  The cap I wore was a handy way to carry them.

8/16/24

Last year I improvised a carrier out of a grape leaf.  He ate all the berries in the car.
