Finished: Diabetes quilt from Fabric Engineer

Over a year ago, I put out a call for quilts on Facebook.  I enjoy making quilts for people, so it's nice to make one for people that want one.  Today's quilt goes to someone from my church.  We were in a small group together for a short time, before COVID hit, and we have two sons the same age.  Well, two of her children were diagnosed with Diabetes I within a year.  So to say that is a huge part of her life lately is an understatement.

And so when it was her turn for a quilt ...

Finished: black to purple and green from Fabric Engineer

Black to purple and green.  That's not a great name, but a good description.  In any case, the quilt is finished!

It's a very large queen size, so it was hard to get a picture of it.  Anyway, you can see that it starts out in the top left with little black, and as you go down you get more and more.  Although it's hard to tell, the quilt was divided into four diagonal strips, each one getting darker.  In hindsight it looks like I could have graduated it a bit more in the second and third ...

Quilting without Batting 2 from Fabric Engineer

I was asked to quilt another quilt without batting!  It was a beautiful quilt, but since I had had some problems with the last one we stuck with the large loops for the quilting motif.

This time it worked so much better!  There were still some thread breaks, but not an insane number.  I started out with all new thread and tensioned the top layer instead of floating it like I normally do.  I'm not sure if one of those things made the difference or if there was something else that just worked better this time.

Quilting without batting from Fabric Engineer

This month someone asked me to quilt a quilt for them.  Of course!

She lives in a hot state, and so we decided to try quilting it without batting.  I'm always up for experiments.  I've quilted a few things without batting when I'm just working on test patterns, but that's been mainly to get the motion down and not caring too much about how it turns out.

Overall, I'd say it was a successful experiment.  There were a few hiccups along the way, and I just wanted to document them for future reference.

1.  It ...

Finished: ombre HST from Fabric Engineer

I finished this quilt a bit ago, but am having a hard time keeping up on the blog.  I still have a list of everything though, so I expect it'll happen eventually.  Anyway, here's the finished ombre HST.

I got the idea from The Flemings 9.  Shannon used an ombre fabric though, while I used a Kona charm pack + a few extra colors.  (They ended up being Baby Blue, Robin Egg, Bahama Blue, Azure, Capri, Jamaica, Peacock, Lagoon, Turquoise, Cyan, Oasis, Mediterranean, and Celestial.)  I tried to interweave them a bit so that the color segregation didn't ...

Colorful Quilts to Brighten Your Day from Quilted Joy

Have you ever noticed that your mood can actually change based on the colors you look at? There is actually a field of study called Color Psychology that looks into this exact thing. With all the gloom and craziness that this year has been, let’s look at some high energy, happy and colorful quilts to take us into fall. You’ll probably notice that no one is wearing a mask, even though we are all wearing masks. Don’t worry, these ladies came in to quilt before Covid.

'Currant Pinwheels' in Simply Vintage! from Nestlings By Robin

Thank you all for sticking through
some of the boring posts this past week
and here is your reward:)
Here is the new issue of Simply Vintage
one of my Favorite publications!!
Inside you will find a sweet
red and green treat based on
this antique quilt below.
This is Coxcombs and Currants which I own.
I thought I would try designing a
smaller piece inspired by the quilt
but in a different colorway.
These are some of my other 'go-to'
colors; red, orange, black.
I really like the small loop design within the leaves.
This one was all done ...

Baby girl quilt from Fabric Engineer

My mother-in-law finished this quilt for a friend.  I really like how it turned out.

I put loops in the white sashing parts.  I was going to do more on the colored fabrics, but then I saw how they popped and kept it to a minimum.  I'll admit, the quilting that I did end up doing on the colored parts isn't what I envisioned in my head.  I was trying to imitate the design on the white fabric (see two pictures below), and instead ended up with a circuit board component.  Not bad enough to take out, but ...

Star quilt from Fabric Engineer

My mother-in-law "needed" a quick turn around on this quilt.  She had made a girl's quilt, not knowing the gender, and then the baby ended up being a boy.

I put loops in the grey and random triangles in the colored section.  Nothing too special, but with different colors and different quilting motifs it comes out special.
