Weekly Stitching Post from High Road Quilter

I've continued working on the quote quilt this week. I stole this idea of "She withstood the storm" from a Facebook post. The umbrella fabric is used in the drunkard's path quilt and the dress fabric is used in the yo-yos. I will embroider the words and work more on her hair and the boat.

This design is from the book I recently reviewed on my High Road Reader blog.

I made this bird a while ago, but don't think I have shown it yet. It is more subtle than most of the motifs so hopefully will ...

We Can Get Through Anything from High Road Quilter

When I mentioned that this block made me think of coronavirus and how this block may provide historical context to the quilt as well as being uplifting to future quilt viewers, my blog readers convinced me to add my thoughts to the quilt. "If we can get through corona virus, we can get through anything."

It was my last week of work and I don't expect much work from this employer for the rest of 2020.  It's been raining and storming at night, which means I have to sleep on the couch to keep Zeus company since he ...

Quote Quilt Progress from High Road Quilter

Sometimes I hesitate to post a midweek progress post, in case there isn't anything picture-worthy to post at the end of the week. I hesitated this week too, but I have plenty more to show you that I added to the quote quilt during the second half of the week.

This elephant comes from a fabric that I purchased myself. It is probably the only fabric I have ever bought for myself that was bought at full price.   I have heard of the philosophy that instead of buying lots of things on sale, you should buy that one special ...

Broderie Perse on Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

How are you? I hope you are doing well.

I am fine, and following the guidelines of social distancing. I have family members who have been sent home without work, while I continue to work from home.

Working on the quote quilt during this time of quarantine was a better idea than I knew when I made that decision.

  1.  It has quotes that are meant to make the viewer (me) feel better.
  2. Looking for motifs and comforting ideas to add to the quilt makes me focus on comforting things.
  3. Although I will probably keep this quilt, it keeps my focus ...

Quote Quilt Stories from High Road Quilter

Hello welcome back! I am sure you are here for the latest update on the Inspirational Quote Crazy Quilt.  In our last post, I showed you how I used some markers to color in a stamp on the quilt. This week, I decided to add some Inktense pencils. It was a simple matter of adding some color to the tiny bits that would be too tedious to embroider. The petals on the small flower are so tiny that one little dab of the pencil and the whole flower has a color.

Then I got the bright idea of writing over ...

Quote Quilt Goes to Kindegarten from High Road Quilter

I follow Cheri Payne's Facebook group and really enjoy seeing all the beautiful primitive quilts that are made from her designs.  When someone posted a quilt that had an alphabet on it, I remembered it was something I wanted to do. A great way to do that without starting a whole new quilt is to add it to the quote quilt.  I added the book last week and this seemed like a good place to add the alphabet. The perspective was great in the drawing of the book but I didn't translate it well in fabric. I still ...

Some Progress on Fancy Squares and Quote Quilt from High Road Quilter

I added some trim to the intersections of Fancy Squares quilt.  This is the same trim that was used in Maximalist and the Inspirational Quote crazy quilt.  I was worried that the trim might be too big and might take away the pattern, but I like the way it looks.  Now I have to figure out how to do the edges. I might add a binding, but I am hoping to find some kind of trim.

I added the fusible to the back of the Inspirational Quote crazy quilt. It is Pellon fusible fleece. I am hoping that it doesn ...

A sprig of flowers for Leap Day from High Road Quilter

Happy Leap Day!

I recently got this embroidery pattern from a blog, but unfortunately I can't find the blog now so I can't tell you where I got it. My first thought was to resize it so it would fit the square but then I realized it would fit the quilt if I am willing to let it spill over to other blocks. Yes I am; in fact, I am happy to do it.

I added some applique to make these flowers really stand out. The petals are perle cotton. I need to add one more stem for ...

Three Pieces of News from High Road Quilter

I received this lovely piece of hand-dyed cheesecloth from Laura Wasilowski. Thank you, Laura!  I've shown you one of her books here on this blog, Fuse and Tell Journal Quilts. She included a card about New England Quilt Seminars which looks quite fun. Too bad I won't be able to go.

The March 2020 issue of Better Homes and Gardens has a article on visible mending by Kim Hutchison. I am happy that the slow stitching movement has been noticed by a mainstream publication.

I added a butterfly to the quote quilt. I bought a piece of fabric ...

Maximalist Revisited from High Road Quilter

Once put my Maximalist quilt on my bulletin board, I knew it was missing something. A quilt named Maximalist needs to be, well Maximal. So I decided to add some gray on the other side. I decided to make a big yo-yo and pinch in the sides to make some dimension, like flower petals. I had some trim for the inspirational crazy quilt, and thought that would be a good center for the flower.

Here's what it looks like now. I guess it is done for now.

For the inspirational quote crazy quilt, I focused on this quote.  The ...

Embroidery on the Quotation Quilt from High Road Quilter

I have been doing some embroidery.

The first step in making a crazy quilt is to piece the blocks, using a foundation which helps make the blocks. The foundation is also helpful in supporting the weight of the embellishments that will be added to it.

It's too late for my inspirational quote crazy quilt, because I decided to make a crazy quilt after the blocks were already pieced and the top had already been made. I decided to add an interfacing behind the quilt to serve as a foundation. In the photo above, I am testing the interfacing on ...

Quotation Quilt from High Road Quilter

I told you in my last post that I was working on my quotation quilt. I don't think I introduced you to it and thought a more formal introduction would be nice. Readers, meet quilt. Quilt, meet my dear readers.

This quilt was started before this blog. The blocks were made during a block swap. The economy blocks all have a muslin center that has a a quote that is inspiring or comforting to someone who is going through a difficult time.

My best guess is that this quilt was started in 2007.

I don't do block swaps ...

Week-long Variety Show from High Road Quilter

02/02/02. It's the 33rd day of the year and there are 333 days left. Superbowl Sunday and Groundhog Day. It feels like spring. What more can you ask for?

I wanted to take a break from the yo-yo quilt, but wasn't done with handwork, so I took out an old unfinished quilt. This quilt is made with blocks from a block swap. I have some embroidery on it already, but there is plenty of room for more.

I am not good at embroidery but anytime I do improv or folkart work, I feel the need to ...
