Introducing Jazz from High Road Quilter

I have been keeping an eye out on the dog shelter website for several months, but I wanted to make sure I was ready. I also wanted to make sure that I got a new dog when I was on vacation so I could have enough time to start the training process.

My sister went to the vet and she found a cute puppy that was available and I was mighty tempted, but I checked the shelter website again, hoping to find a slightly older dog who was already potty trained.

I am on vacation so this would be the ...

WIP Storage Problem Solving from High Road Quilter

I have a problem that I have complained about many times on my blog. I have decided it is time to fix it.

I sew in my living room, but when I have planned company over, I have to turn the sewing room back into a living room. I usually work on two or three quilts at a time, sometimes more.  This means I have to put away all of the quilts I am working on. I usually put them in boxes, mostly shoebox sized boxes, and take them upstairs into a bedroom where I store my fabric and other ...

15 Minutes to Stitch Weekly Recap from High Road Quilter

There aren't any pretty quilt photos to show you this week, but I think this beautiful sky shot will suffice.  It was taken earlier in January. We got about three inches of snow yesterday and the snow is falling again today. It is beautiful, but we don't walk when it is slippery anymore to protect Zeus.

I have been trying to bullet journal.  I mostly started because I have seen a lot of beautiful bullet journals on Youtube and I really liked the art. I am sure you will get quite a laugh out of my dinosaurs. I ...

15 Minutes to Stitch from High Road Quilter

My oven is working again. I ordered a new igniter switch, and it came right away express mail. But it arrived broken, and they sent the replacement by first class mail. All the videos said it was easy to replace, but it took two other brains and a few days to figure out how to put it in. We had turned off the gas during the first fix, and I left it off in an abundance of caution, which meant I was without a stove too for more than a week.  I got by without resorting to eating out, but ...

My Cleaning Method from High Road Quilter

Since this is Blogtober, I decided to blog more often, though not every day. I am taking the lazy way out and using a post I had in my drafts. I wasn't sure you would be interested in my cleaning strategy, but I like talking about it, so I am giving it to you. It sounds like an infomercial at first, but I am not selling anything, though I have provided affiliate links to the two books I am referencing.

I've read books about cleaning all my life, probably because I would prefer reading about it to actually ...

Free Things from High Road Quilter

I've had lots of good surprises this week.

I had been whining to myself that other crazy quilters use bought and found things on their crazy quilts, and I am making most of my additions myself. The tiny moon I added last week is tiny and doesn't make a big impact but it took me a long time to make.

Usually my local thrift store doesn't have a lot of textiles in my price range. I can buy a piece of clothing with a small piece of embroidery for $4.95 but I would prefer to pay ...

Visitors in the Garden from High Road Quilter

I have zinnias in the garden again this year, and got some visitors in the garden today. They insisted on keeping a properly social distance, but I enjoyed their visit.

Summer Happenings from High Road Quilter

There are a couple of people who share their coronavirus diaries with us every day.  They both add drawings to their daily happenings and make beautiful journals.  I really enjoy getting to vicariously join them in their adventures, so I thought I would share some of my "adventures" with you.

Think of it is a "what I've done on my summer vacation so far." This replaces the photos of the month I usually present.

I bought a planter to take to my brother's funeral. I was too late to order one for delivery, so I ran out to ...

Masks, Continued from High Road Quilter

In my last post, I told you about my plans to make masks.

My original plan was to try each of these, but since I don't need that many and want to quickly give my cousin the masks she needs. I decided to guess how I would like the other masks based on looking at it instead of actually trying it on.

Since I made the plans, I took a couple additional walks. Only for you to test out the mask. I used the same batik mask I tried earlier.  I guess it is mine now. In the morning ...

More Experiments With Masks from High Road Quilter

Second batch. The first batch of masks I made (see my last post), protect others from getting my illness.  I protect you, you protect me. Better than nothing.

I want to make a second batch that hopefully provides additional protection for the wearer as well as the people around the wearer.

There are so many mask patterns to choose from, each with their own little touch. I was getting overwhelmed and people kept forwarding me even more.

One of the ones I plan to try is this one from Instructables, https://www.instructables.com/id/AB-Mask-for-a-Nurse-by-a-Nurse/ , which is a simple ...

Experimenting With Mask Patterns from High Road Quilter

I've never worn a mask before, and when I looked for mask patterns, there were so many choices that I felt information overload. I decided to just make a few different patterns and decide what pattern makes the most sense to me. Here are my results. Note that the masks were made for speed and sturdiness.  I did not focus on prettiness, although I did try to use coordinating fabric whenever possible.

I decided early on not to include a filter of any kind.  There are several reasons for this. First of all, I don't have any. Second ...

Three Pieces of News from High Road Quilter

I received this lovely piece of hand-dyed cheesecloth from Laura Wasilowski. Thank you, Laura!  I've shown you one of her books here on this blog, Fuse and Tell Journal Quilts. She included a card about New England Quilt Seminars which looks quite fun. Too bad I won't be able to go.

The March 2020 issue of Better Homes and Gardens has a article on visible mending by Kim Hutchison. I am happy that the slow stitching movement has been noticed by a mainstream publication.

I added a butterfly to the quote quilt. I bought a piece of fabric ...

My Word of the Year 2020 from High Road Quilter

In 2019, my Word of the Year was Appreciate.  It was meant to make me more grateful for the things I have in life and to take the time to savor instead of rushing through life.

I forgot to add a gratitude every day or even to every post and eventually gave up on even trying to do it once in a while. And I had to keep looking up what my Word of the Year even was.

But I did find a way to incorporate it in my quilting.  I appreciated the joy of quilting and did not impose ...
