Another Idea on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Anybody who has been paying attention would know that the last 6 months, I've been a bit obsessed with my new job.  Let me just say that Customer Service is not for the weak at heart...but...if you love your product and you love working with people, it can be really fun.  Not to mention throw in a nice work environment and a touch of technology and its really is fun.

That all said, my creative side is slowly but surely coming back to life.  I've had this idea baking in the back of my brain for ...

Fused Applique Using Chiffon from CaliQuilter

This small art quilt is fused applique using chiffon, an applique technique I learned from Esterita Austin. Using a line drawing of an iris, I pinned a piece of white organza over the top of the drawing. Organza, like chiffon, is very transparent so the drawing is easy to see. Starting with the petal at […]

the cows are beginning to wander

looking for feed...

The cattle are on Open Range...

What It’s Like to Judge a Large, International Quilt Show from Christa Quilts

I recently returned from my trip teaching – and judging – at Pacific International Quilt Festival, which took place in Santa Clara California in July of 2024. The quilts of course were amazing, and my students were well prepared for success!

Click here to see images of all the winning quilts.

Best Mid Century Modern Quilt: Retro Living by Tami Graeber

For the record I am NOT a certified quilt judge, but I’ve had many years experience entering my own work into quilt shows. I’ve also volunteered numerous hours in judging rooms as a scribe or quilt handler, and I ...

Now that hay season is over,

I am trying to spend some time

in the flower beds...

This is the Thread Shed where I do most

of my quilting.

It has flowers growing on all 4 sides...

The Cowboy installed an A/C in here

and I can sew when it is over 100 degrees

and be nice and cool...

Hydrangeas blooming

in front of the Thread Shed...

They are lime green at first,

then they turn purple, then blue...

The Cowboy built the little yellow

Thread Shed for me in 2000.

He built the little red hen house in 1988...

The lupines in front of the Thread Shed

Show Report – My Trip to Paducah 2024 from Christa Quilts

If you haven’t had a chance to travel to Paducah, KY for the AQS quilt show, I thought it would be fun to share a few highlights from my week of teaching there. It was my first trip to this amazing show and it certainly won’t be my last!

From Las Vegas, I flew to Charlotte, NC and then took a smaller commuter plane to the Paducah regional airport. Once there, we were greeted by the Paducah ambassadors and then taken over to the host hotel to settle in. The next day kicked off a 4 day frenzy ...

Durham Art Guild Artist in Residence Experience from Factotum of Arts

My time with the Durham Art Guild (DAG), as an artist in residence (AiR) has come to an end. It was bittersweet, excited about the new opportunities in front of me (more to come) but sad I won’t see everyone as often. I can highly recommend this 6-month (ish) artist in residence. I got so much out of it.

DAG Studio Space at Durham Bottling Company

I learned a lot about myself through this residence, which could be in part due to the fact I had a lot to learn about being a full-time artist for the first time ...

Option Expedition from Prairie Moon Quilts

Victoria Findlay Wolfe has a new series of work now showing! She worked hard on these pieces over the last couple years, which means she kept me busy with these pieces as well. I have to say I breathed a big sigh of relief when we finished the last one for this exhibit!

There will be more in the future, but for now, we are both moving house (which was coincidental good timing that we are both moving at the same time), so she is taking a break from this series, and I’m just doing random stuff for a ...

Let's Talk Improvisational Piecing on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Curves II,  Nina-Marie Sayre
Improved pieced to a planned pattern

Improv Surface Design with a little bit
of Improv Piecing,

Taking a class in improvisational piecing, got me thinking of how many uses there are for the technique.  For that matter, how much a non-technique, improvisational piecing actually is.  The reason I say that is improvisational piecing's only rule is that there are NO RULES.  So, it can basically do whatever you want, whenever you want, letting your fabric, your vision or even your intuition be in
the driver seat.

That can be very freeing or a little scary ...

Everything, Everywhere, All in One Month from Sew Preeti Quilts

Paul's mom, Krissy passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2024.

Picture from Paul's graduation in 2007

We went to Georgia for her memorial service. It was a solemn occasion but I could not be sad for long since I was being enveloped in so many hugs from all the relatives and cousins, some I had never met before and some I think I had met once that Christmas.

Lots of Hugs

Paul kept it together and he looked so handsome.

Love you so much!

Paul spoke at the service mentioning how his mom was a rebel and rarely ...
