Filling the veranda with lush green, flowering plants is a springtime tradition for me, arriving a bit later this year due to the cold temperatures overnight up to last week. I never got around to starting seeds in the basement either, so I am starting behind this year. When the overnight temperatures warmed up to the 50s, it was time to begin. Our local flower show continues to do its annual spring parade in the garden. The mountain laurel had its day, and now the dogwoods are blooming. This year they are a pristine white. For some reason, they sometimes have a green hue.

I finally got back to finishing off the planting for the veranda pots this week. The impatiens were on sale at the hardware store, and I have been waiting for those to fill the pots in the little side tables. The tops are tile mosaics, so they need pots in the bottom to keep them from toppling over.

At the bargain rack last month I found this ‘drop in’ plant ...
read moreFlowers in the garden have slowed down, with a couple of very late freezes in mid May turning all the azalea blooms brown. It has slowed the emergence of the rhododendrons and mountain laurel too. I missed going to the downtown Garden Jubilee festival this weekend, which was canceled and moved to individual garden centers. In the past, we would spend a whole day there looking at the flowers and plants on offer in all the booths, buying some pretty things to plant, eating some festival food and enjoying the music. But there is plenty going on, so get ready ...
