A Great Long Weekend from All Things Quilty

We are sad that this weekend is over.  Our sunset cruise around Sarasota Bay was magical.  It started out rainy, but the clouds soon parted and the music started playing.  We saw dolphins, gorgeous sunsets, and lots of birds.  We definitely recommend LeBarge Sunset Tours!

Charlie finished his fifth week of radiation on Friday.  He is feeling some fatigue and also loss of his sense of taste.  We are considering acupuncture if the problem continues.

Friday night Charlie' brother Richard and wife Phyllis flew down from North Carolina to spend the weekend with us.  Their son Chris lives near Tampa ...

Something Quilty for my Birthday from All Things Quilty

We are still in Sarasota for another month.  Today is my birthday.  I got a wonderful surprise this morning when the FedEx truck pulled up.  My sister Katy sent me a package with this cheerful apron and potholders!

Upon closer inspection, some of those fabrics looked very familiar!  When we moved from our Raleigh house, I gave Katy several huge bags of fabric scraps.  She works with an organization that helps disabled adults with careers and living arrangements.  The recipient of my fabrics made this cute set.  The pockets and potholders are my fabrics!  Now look what I could have ...

Emporia State University Quilt from Lost Quilt Come Home Page

Jackie Jarvis reports the loss of her daughter’s Emporia State University Quilt. It was last seen during the summer of 2015 in a storage unit around the Orlando, Florida area.

The quilt is 60″ by 60″. The main colors are black and yellow-gold. There are a couple of screen prints included on this quilt. One is their mascot, the hornet. Another says ESU. This quilt was machine pieced in 2012. It has a label that says something like, “For Lindsey, Love, Mom” and maybe something about Grandma J.

Jackie writes, “This quilt has much sentimental value as my mother ...

Girl Scouts Rule from Lost Quilt Come Home Page

Christie Eckardt is searching for her “Girl Scouts Rule” quilt. It was last seen during December 2016 in the British Club in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She had it at a quilters meeting and it was either already gone when she left, or it was accidentally left under the table and went missing afterwards. The Club had nothing in their lost and found department.

This quilt is about 48″ by 60″. The main colors are white, green, and pink. Printed Girl Scouts fabrics are used. This top is machine pieced, machine appliquéd and machine quilted. This quilt had just ...

Psst….Quilters Have Questions from Lisa H Calle's Blog

You Have A Question, I Have An Answer

I noticed in one of your posts that you had basted a quilt prior to actual quilting. I would like to know the best method for basting. I have been cross basting about every 8 inches. Would grid basting work better? And what is the best way to do this?  Cynthia

Yes, Cynthia, the above quilt needed to come off the frame before it was done so I could get some samples completed.  I used a crosshatch basting, the spacing was about every 4 inches.  I did not want any of the ...

Florida Fun from All Things Quilty

We have just returned from a wonderful week on the Gulf coast of Florida.  First stop was Sarasota, where my husband Charlie had his one-year check-up at the Dattoli Cancer Center.  Scans and ultrasounds and exams showed no recurrence or new cancer!  Great news!

Then it was on to Lido Key Beach for a couple of days.  We stayed once again at the Sand Castle Resort.  It was only steps to the water from our room, and warm enough to enjoy sitting on the beach.

On Thursday, we drove down to Ft. Myers for the weekend with my brother Jeff ...

Early Spring from All Things Quilty

February brought some extremely warm temperatures this year.  Raleigh is in full bloom.  I was inspired to paint some bunnies.

The first one I call "I'm not fat, I'm fluffy!"

And for one slightly less whimsical but still colorful, how about a rainbow rabbit?  I was inspired by one I saw on Pinterest.

After several days of wearing shorts and sandals, we came up to the mountains yesterday and this morning it snowed!  Bummer!  We went to town this morning and picked out flooring and carpet for the new basement studio.  We chose a wood-look tile for the ...

Birding Vacation from Quilting through Rose-colored Trifocals!

Two weeks ago, I left cold rainy Ohio for 10 days of (almost) non-stop birding in Central Florida!
I've birded as long as I've sewn -- my parents thought I should know how to sew and I thought I should chase down birds -- happily, I've been able to do both -- one as my vocation and the other as my avocation!

Since my studio has slipped into the "too messy" zone, I'm starting my re-entry with some tidying up this week, so today I'll regale you with some of my vacation photos!

Once I landed in Orlando ...

Dreaming of Christmas from a daily dose of fiber

Me and MLW

A Florida Christmas many, many moons ago!

Here I am hanging the wonderful (Vogue Knitting) stocking that my mother made and my cousin with her “Florida stocking”! My grandparents wintered not far from Disney World and each year sent money to their daughters for a trip to Florida – or to put in the savings account. The two of us, the youngest of all the cousins, loved the (overnight) trip down on the train, from Trenton, New Jersey. Seeing poinsettia growing in the ground, having molded ice cream every night for dessert at the clubhouse and generally being spoiled by all ...

Multicolor baby quilt from Lost Quilt Come Home Page

uddybackbrighid-babyquilt

uddybackbrighid-babyquiltBrighid Uddyback hopes someone has found this multicolor baby quilt. During December 2015 it was accidentally left at a Best Western in St. Augustine, Florida. The loss was reported 11 hours later, but they claimed to not know anything about the quilt or the pillow pet that was left with it.

The quilt was made for Brighid’s daughter by her grandmother. This quilt includes a heart from a car seat cover, some shiny fabrics, names stitched on, colorful fabric from dog grooming bandanas and a Royal Caribbean ribbon. It is machine quilted.

If you find this quilt, please contact ...

reinhardtkendall-tshirtquiltcaffe

reinhardtkendall-tshirtquiltcaffeKendall Reinhardt hopes to recover two missing T-shirt quilts. They were shipped to her home in Newell, California from Florida. The shipping company said they were delivered to her porch at 3:15 on December 23, 2015 but when she got home around 4:30, there was no package.

These t-shirt quilts were made from her ex-husband’s shirts after he passed away. They were to be Christmas gifts for her two children. The quilts are about 60″ square. One has a black backing and the other has a blue backing. The t-shirts are from Mammoth, Reno, Hawaii, along with ...

Great News, a Fun Week, and More Great News! from All Things Quilty

We have just returned from a week on the Gulf Coast of Florida.  The purpose of the trip was to revisit the Dattoli Cancer Center in Sarasota for my husband's six-month check-up.  If you have experienced cancer in your family, you know there is always a bit of anxiety when you go back for tests or exams.  Fortunately, Charlie got the all-clear:  he is still in remission.  Yippee!  Charlie had Stage 4 prostate cancer that had spread throughout his skeletal system and lymph nodes.  We are still numb with shock that he is in remission.  Thank you, Dr. Dattoli ...
